BlackBerry Curve 8980 Gets FCC Approval!

BlackBerry Curve 8980
#BlackBerry #Blackberry8980 Seeks FCC Approval! http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
Looks like RIM has finally decided to offer an continuation for the BlackBerry 8900 series. The new Curve8980 should make a bunch of people excited about Blackberries again. But the damper seem to be that, as filed, is a quad band GSM/EDGE only device, like the Curve 8900. Hope they will plugin 3G or even 4G some where. It has also got WiFi, Bluetooth, full qwerty keyboard and a 3.2 Mega pixel camera with flash. The navigation seem to be done with an optical trackpad.
No release date yet.

Kinect Is a Hit for Microsoft

Looks like kinect is doing wonders to Microsoft gaming it seems. They have sold about 2.5 million kinect units since it's debut 25 days ago; Seeing the demo, I wanted one too but we do not have a XBox but we do have PS3 and WII :) and we are happy with our moves.
“We are thrilled about the consumer response to Kinect, and are working hard with our retail and manufacturing partners to expedite production and shipments of Kinect to restock shelves as fast as possible to keep up with demand, With sales already exceeding two and a half million units in just 25 days, we are on pace to reach our forecast of 5 million units sold to consumers this holiday.” said Don Mattrick, president of the Interactive Entertainment Business at Microsoft.
Good work Microsoft.

Apple Nokia Legal Battles Will Start This Week

#Apple #Nokia Legal Battles http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
Nokia and Apple will present their arguments for the patents they own and the other violated to the ITC, International Trade Commission this week.
(The International Trade Commission, a quasi-judicial agency, was set up to protect domestic markets from unfair trade practices. It has the power to ban imports of products found to infringe U.S. patents.)
Lawyer talking to Bloomberg thinks it is a contest between 800 pound gorillas;
“These are very well-known, deep-pocketed, high-end manufacturers, Usually you have one 800-pound gorilla going after a new entrant. Here you’ve got 800-pound gorillas fighting each other.” ” said Lyle Vander Schaaf, an attorney at Brinks Hofer Gilson & Lione in Washington, who handles cases before the commission.
Nokia sued Apple and Apple counter sued Nokia  in 2009. Nokia also had the first chance to present it's case to ITC.
“Apple was a decade late to market for mobile phones, You can undercut competition when you use the inventions of others.” said Patrick Flinn, a lawyer at Alston & Bird who represents Nokia,  in opening arguments today in Washington.
Apple also has other cases against HTC and Motorola in front of ITC, perhaps a part of battle to stem the growth of Android, the world's most popular mobile operating system.

Tablets Will Eat Into PC Sales, Says Gartner.

Tablets Like #iPad, #Samsung Galaxy Tab and others Will Eat Into PC Sales http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
World is continuing to  increase Personal computers usage in the coming year, like past years. Gartner says the new tablets will take a bite out of these forecast PC sales of 409 million units in 2011. This increase marks a 15.9 % increase from 2010.
With shrinking purses, US and Western European customers are postponing new PC purchases but fears that some may altogether forgo PCs and hug Madia Tablets. Gartner thinks closer to 10% of PC sales will be absorbed by Tablets.
Following is the press release by Garner;

STAMFORD, Conn., November 29, 2010 — Worldwide PC shipments are on pace to total 352.4 million units in 2010, a 14.3 percent increase from 2009, according to the latest preliminary forecast by Gartner, Inc. These projections are down from Gartner’s previous PC shipment forecast in September of 17.9 percent growth.2011 worldwide PC shipments are forecast to reach 409 million units, a 15.9 percent increase from 2010. This is down from Gartner’s earlier estimate of 18.1 percent growth for 2011.
These results reflect marked reductions in expected near-term unit growth based on expectations of weaker consumer demand, due in no small part to growing user interest in media tablets such as the iPad,” said Ranjit Atwal, research director at Gartner. “Over the longer term, media tablets are expected to displace around 10 percent of PC units by 2014.”
While Gartner does not regard the current dynamics in the PC market quite yet as an inflexion point, analysts do see many disruptive forces coming together that will weaken the market moving forward.
“PC market growth will be impacted by devices that enable better on-the-go content consumption such as media tablets and next-generation smartphones,” said Raphael Vasquez, research analyst at Gartner. “These devices will be increasing embraced as complements if not substitutes for PCs where voice and light data consumption are desired. It is likely that desk-based PCs will be adversely impacted over the long-term by the adoption of hosted virtual desktops, which can readily use other devices like thin clients.”
“PCs are still seen as necessities, but the PC industry's inability to significantly innovate and its overreliance on a business model predicated on driving volume through price declines are finally impacting the industry's ability to induce new replacement cycles,” said George Shiffler, research director at Gartner. “As the PC market slows, vendors that differentiate themselves through services and technology innovation rather than unit volume and price will dictate the future. Even then, leading vendors will be challenged to keep PCs from losing the device ‘limelight’ to more innovative products that offer better dedicated compute capabilities.”
In the near term, many consumers and businesses will continue to refrain from buying PCs, as they collectively rebuild their finances in the face of slower income growth, weaker employment gains and a cloudy economic outlook. Over the longer-term, users are likely to slow PC replacements and extend PC lifetimes as they turn to other devices as their primary computing platform.
Gartner analysts said there are five dynamics that are challenging the PC industry:
Emerging Markets Continue to Drive GrowthWhile we expect a continued upside in our emerging market forecast, leading to emerging markets gaining more than 50 percent of the total worldwide PC market by the end of 2011, mature markets will face mounting challenges. Furthermore, in emerging markets, there is good chance that consumers will simply leap frog PCs and move directly to alternative devices in the coming years rather than following the traditional pattern of purchasing a PC as their first computing device.
Consumer Wallet Continues to ShrinkHome mobile PCs have suffered the steepest downgrade with shipments in mature markets expected to be significantly weaker. Consumers in the U.S. and Western Europe continue to postpone purchases in the face of financial and economic uncertainty. However, Gartner said that the bigger issue for PCs in the home market is consumers temporarily, if not permanently, forgoing PC purchases in favor of media tablets.
Challenge of Emerging DevicesMedia tablet capabilities are expected to become more PC-like in the coming years, luring consumers away from PCs and displacing a significant volume of PC shipments, especially mini-notebooks. Media tablets are rapidly finding favor with PC buyers who are attracted to their more-dedicated entertainment-driven features and their instant-on capability.
Extended Life Cycle ImpactThe ascent of emerging devices will have an important indirect impact on PCs – the extension of average PC lifecycles. The effect of this ascent will be to spread traditional PC functionality over a variety of complementary devices. As this happens, analysts foresee users extending the lifetimes of PCs because there will be less need to replace them as often.
Uptake of Thin ClientsHosted virtual desktops (HVDs) are not expected to earnestly impact mature professional markets until 2012, at the earliest. Longer term, users that adopt HVDs to access their compute capabilities will do so predominantly by using refurbished PCs and thin clients. These alternative devices will displace new PC units, thereby reducing expected future desk-based shipment growth.

Are AT&T, Sprint and Comcast Hit With Outages On Cybermonday?

Are AT&T, Sprint and Comcast Hit With Outages On Cybermonday? http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
According to Tom Keating of TMC, three major networks seem to be in trouble.  Also all seem to be in the east cost of USA.
I am on AT&T network for phone, DSL and Mobile and all seem to be normal. My Comcast business cable is working fine as well.
Perhaps networks did not expect the surge of early CyberMonday holiday shoppers, I guess so.

Mobile Broadband Macro Trends and Predictions.

Perhaps it is time for fem2cell business. Why do AT&T users pay to provide AT&T Microcell, a service like this? and perhaps this is a way for Verizon to attract some of those iPhone users, who are fed up with AT&T service. Think Verizon.

FIOS At 150/35 Mbps!

#FIOS At 150/35 Mbps! http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
It may be already old news but as Verizon says, it is good to be king and we got to write about the undisputed king of broadband with speeds hitting as high as 135/35 Mbps, in the US. This is far beyond the speeds offered by major cable providers such as Comcast or Cablevision. FIOS is much faster compared to those two cable providers and when it comes to Time Warner cable, the download speed, it is about 200 times faster, when it comes to uploads, FIOS's 35 mbps upload speed is more than 130 percent faster than Cablevision and Comcast’s and more than 600 percent faster than Time Warner.  according to Verizon.
Eligible residential customers will first see these speeds and the it will also available to small business customers by the end of the year.

iNewspaper (TABloid), "Daily" From Rupert Murdoch And Steve Jobs, Specially For Tablet Computers! (iPad?)

#iNewspaper (#TABloid ), Daily From Rupert #Murdoch And Steve #Jobs, Specially For Tablet Computers! (iPad?) http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
FAIL, comes to mind when I think about having to pay $0.99 to read you get to read free on the net. Just good judgment and something like Google Reader is what you want and if you want to be informed continuously, Google Alerts and Twitter will fill in the gaps. But then again, both of them are big boys and either they will make millions or lose. Either case, they will smile.
Trying to revive his dieing newspaper channels, Rupert Murdoch is creating a newspaper, called daily to be released by the end of this month on subscription basis. It will cost readers $0.99. Perhaps I should created a "newspaper" as I mentioned above and sell in for $.09 for sane people.( I don't expect Steve to approve that app in any hurry! But most I write these days are for Android in any case.).
The team behind the TABloid is impressive as the editors and the reporters go and is said to be run from News Corp's offices in New York.
Murdoch supposed to have said that the Apple iPad is a game changer and he is happy with 5% of the projected 40 Million iPads;
"He envisions a world in which every family has a iPad in the home and it becomes the device from which they get their news and information. If only 5% of those 40 million subscribe to the Daily, that's already two million customers."
I have no idea what Steve Jobs thinking of getting in to TABloid business. I wonder how he is going to control boobs from showing up! knowing a guy from SUN,Pete Picton, is editing, reporting for it. May be he will hire a team for Boob control. Perhaps I should watch my words as I just remembered smiling or laughing to myself at supermarket counters, looking at tabloids and wondering who buys these? Apparently a whole bunch of people.

iPhone Is Not For Everyone But Android Is, Steve Wozniak

#iPhone Is Not For Everyone But #Android Is, Steve #WoZniak http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
In an interview with Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf, straight speaking Steve Wozniak, the man who created the first Apple computer and a major Apple share holder, told the world that iPhone has the quality and the Android mass appeal,in other words, Android will be the dominant smartphone platform.
Speaking about the iPhone, he mentioned thet the phone was conceived in 2004 in collaboration with a Japanese company but was shelved, until 2007, when it was time, the ripe time for amazing the world.
His take on Android is that the Android OS is like early windows and it could be polished to like the iOS that runs on iPhones, iPads and iPods.
The engineer, who is still on Apple payroll concluded the interview with a jab at Nokia, saying it is a brand of yesteryear and that it need to come up with a product that appeal to younger generations, I wonder about leader of the mobile market share is that bad or that all those Nokia users (33% world market share) are old folks.
Either way, Steve Wozniak is a man to watch.

Xfinity TV App, The Inside Scoop.

#Xfinity TV App, The Inside Scoop. http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
You may have already read bunch of news items and blog posts about Comcast's Xfinity TV App which alows one to use  iPad™, iPhone® and iPod touch® as a remote control. Soon we will be able to turn any of those devices into a TV screens to watch your On Demand shows and movies. The App is coming soon to Android as well.
Now you get the inside scoop of what went into making the app from Engineer Sean Brown. Cool stuff, just like any other App development.

Comcast Resolves Net Neutrality, Is It Time To Xfinity?

#Comcast Resolves #NetNeutrality, Is It Time To Xfinity? http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
After FCC and the likes of Florida Attorney General began asking questions about traffic throttling and forging torrent packets, looks like Comcast is cleaning up the act and making ways for net neutrality.
Good timing as I am planing to leave AT&T broadband services after something like 16 years (If you count ISDN as broadband :). The only reason I stayed with AT&T because of the IP block I received, and most of my DNS runs from those IP address'. But now I am changing and I can save a lot of moola by going with Comcast Xfinity triple play!.
But one should not forget about net neutrality nor ignore as the issue is very much alive and brush up your knowledge on it. Two posts that collect a lot of information such as Comcast's lies about traffic throttling, packet manipulating, FCC and Florida Attorney General, found at DSLReports and Ars Technica.
Also do not forget to read Comcast's own blog post about the matter.
Hope Comcast has Business service for self employed.

TV Culture, Global 2010 Media Engagement Barometer, Tells Americans Love TV And Paying For It.

#Socialmedia Media Engagement Barometer  http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
The Vanson Bourne survey, Motorola Mobility’s Global 2010 Media Engagement Barometer,  conducted for Motorola has a lot of information about how we love TV and pay for it. There were 1000 people from USA out of 7500 interviewed worldwide. So it looks like about 86% Americans subscribe to Pay TV system and just about 6% watch internet TV with internet enabled TVs. Also about 59% watch the world through a HDTV.
The research clearly shows a changing television landscape, one where subscription services are becoming mainstream, augmented by social activities revolving around Internet chat and networking channels, As we advance further into the Internet Era of TV, the ability for service providers to differentiate their offers will become even more crucial as consumers look for extra value from their subscriptions. The good news is that, based on these findings, consumers are willing to pay for the services providing the value.” said Bill Ogle, chief marketing officer, Motorola Mobility.
But for me the important part is about the community;
China, the United Arab Emirates and Russia are the most enthusiastic when it comes to integrating social media into their viewing habits. The Japanese, Germans and viewers in the Nordics are the least likely to chat, use instant messaging or a platform like Twitter or Facebook® to discuss a program or video while they are watching it. According to the study, 84 percent of Japanese viewers have never undertaken such an activity. Globally, however, 58 percent of people who have used social media during a TV program would change their service provider if this was offered as an integrated service.

The complete report and graphics are available at Motorola.

ISIS, A National Mobile Commerce Network From AT&T Mobility, T-Mobile USA and Verizon Wireless,

#ISIS, #Paywithisis A National Mobile Commerce Network From AT&T Mobility, T-Mobile http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
Wireless big boys have come together to make a financial network, where you could make payments with your phone and and pay to your phone company, like Japanese customers have been doing for ages. The payments are made via a contactless mobile payment and commerce services using near-field communication technology. NFC uses short-range, high frequency wireless technology to enable the encrypted exchange of information between devices at a short distance. The system is not out of the woods yet but big honchos say it is being designed to include strong security and privacy safeguards.
Once the network and the system is ready, Barclaycard US, part of Barclays PLC, is expected to be the first issuer on the network, offering multiple mobile payment products to meet the needs of every customer.
“We believe the venture will have the scope and scale necessary to introduce mobile commerce on a broad basis. In the beginning, we intend to fully utilize Discover’s national payment infrastructure as well as Barclaycard’s expertise in contactless and mobile payments, Moving forward, Isis will be available to all interested merchants, banks and mobile carriers.” said Michael Abbott the Chief Executive Officer of Isis.
Following is the press release and visit Paywithisis to find more information. I wonder how VISA missed this! Link after the jump.

NEW YORK, NY — AT&T Mobility, T-Mobile USA and Verizon Wireless today announced the formation of a joint venture chartered with building ISIS™, a national mobile commerce network that aims to fundamentally transform how people shop, pay and save.
Isis’ initial focus will be on building a mobile payment network that utilizes mobile phones to make point-of-sale purchases. By utilizing smartphone and near-field communication (NFC) technology to modernize the payments process, Isis intends to deliver new levels of competition and value to consumers and merchants. Isis expects to introduce its service in key geographic markets during the next 18 months.
Michael Abbott has been named as Chief Executive Officer of Isis. Formerly with GE Capital, Abbott is a veteran financial services executive with extensive experience in the payment and technology industries.
“Our mobile commerce network, through relationships with merchants, will provide an enhanced, more convenient, more personalized shopping experience for consumers,” said Michael Abbott, Chief Executive Officer of Isis. “While mobile payments will be at the core of our offering, it is only the start. We plan to create a mobile wallet that ultimately eliminates the need for consumers to carry cash, credit and debit cards, reward cards, coupons, tickets and transit passes.”
Isis Brings Both Consumer and Merchant Scale
Founding members, AT&T Mobility, T-Mobile USA and Verizon Wireless, collectively provide wireless services to more than 200 million consumers who will have access to the Isis service. Isis is working with Discover Financial Services’ payment network, currently accepted at more than seven million merchant locations nationwide, to develop an extensive mobile payment infrastructure for the joint venture.
Barclaycard US, part of Barclays PLC, is expected to be the first issuer on the network, offering multiple mobile payment products to meet the needs of every customer.
“We believe the venture will have the scope and scale necessary to introduce mobile commerce on a broad basis. In the beginning, we intend to fully utilize Discover’s national payment infrastructure as well as Barclaycard’s expertise in contactless and mobile payments,” said Abbott. “Moving forward, Isis will be available to all interested merchants, banks and mobile carriers.”
How It Works
The new venture will enable contactless mobile payment and commerce services using near-field communication technology. NFC uses short-range, high frequency wireless technology to enable the encrypted exchange of information between devices at a short distance. The new system is being designed and built to include strong security and privacy safeguards.
About Isis
The joint venture is between AT&T Mobility LLC, T-Mobile USA and Verizon Wireless and is based in New York City. Apple iPad vs BlackBerry Playbook, Connectivity Speeds Compared

#Apple #iPad vs #BlackBerry #Playbook http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/

Samsung Galaxy Tab, Reasons Not To Get, Carrier Price Plans.

#Samsung #Galaxy Tab, Reasons Not To Get, Carrier Prices. http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
After waiting for a long time, I have decided not to get the Samsung Galaxy Tab, for various reasons (most important being the price), this comparison might help you in deciding. For me it is simply the price, if I am to pay $600, I might as well get a full blown WiFi iPad and not worry about contracts.
Galaxy Tab does not have a WiFi only version as of now and carriers are bundling data plans with it, with the lowest starting at $15 for 250MB on AT&T (just like the iPad plans), to $25 for 200MB on T-Mobile. Looks like the Verizon's $20-plan, which gives 1GB, the best plan.

Just like the Verizon's "there is a map for that" dispute with Verizon on America's Largest 3G Network, last year, AT&T is getting pressure from T-Mobiles Largest 4G network, again from Ads like "T-Mobile myTouch 4G "New Ride"".

Apple Finally Finds Time And Fixes 134 Vulnerabilities In MAC OS X,

Apple Fixes 130 Vulnerabilities In MAC OS X,  http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
I have not updated yet but the Apple Patch machine has released a ginormous patch release, the largest ever, so far.
The updates came for Mac OS X 10.6, (Snow Leopard), and OS X 10.5, (Leopard), was Apple's first since September and the seventh for the year. But even with 134 bugs fixed, there many left to be fixed it seems, according to experts in the field.
But one must also know that 55 or 47% of the bugs fixed were related to Adobe Flash! No wonder Steve Jobs does not want flash near his iWares.
But it is catching up to MAC OS X machines as well, the new MacBook Air laptop it the company's first Flash-less Mac OS X system.
Of the 79 non-Flash patches in Wednesday's massive collection, 16 were related to X11, Apple's implementation of the Unix X Windows System; nine affected QuickTime, Apple's own media player; four were in OS X's ImageIO component; and another four resided in Apple Type Services (ATS), the operating system's font renderer.
Considering the size of the upgrade which is between 240MB and 645MB for the client version of Mac OS X it might be better to download the update first rather than trying to update via the system. There are reports of problems appearing in  Apple's support forum. Several users, for instance, said that they were unable to connect with 802.11n wireless networks after upgrading to 10.6.5.
But the biggest trouble was with users with encrypted hard drives using PGP's Whole Disk Encryption software. Users reported that Macs would not boot after the update, forcing them to restore from backups. PGP says if you decrypt the drive first there is not problem with updating.
You can download the patches from Apple Support.

Google Search App For Windows Phone 7, Google vs BING

#Google Search App For #Windows Phone 7, Google vs BING http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
Looks like Google is taking search to Microsoft's door step with the new Google Search App for Windows Phone 7, seeking to compete with BING.
But the Google Search App, is different from the way it performs on iOS or Android platforms. Just like BING app, it does not search the device for contacts or other information. But it does well for web search. Google Search App offers search  suggestions as you type and you can then choose from the suggestions just like on iPhone or one of the Droids. Another feature the search app brings is geolocation support, providing local search results.
The Google Search App for Windows Phone 7 is in the Zune Marketplace, right now.

Facebook Finds A Way To Suck GMail Contact Data,

#Facebook Finds A Way To Suck #GMail Contact Data, Your Data. http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
It is hilarious the way big boys fight. Facebook lost the direct import of GMail contacts, mainly because Facebook refuses provide the same, as per Google's terms of service;
5.8. Google supports data portability. By accessing Content through the Contacts Data API or Portable Contacts API for use in your service or application, you are agreeing to enable your users to export their contacts data to other services or applications of their choice in a way that’s substantially as fast and easy as exporting such data from Google Contacts, subject to applicable laws.
And Facebook does not do that. Forget about Google, even you can't download your own contact info :).

Now Face book is providing you with another way provide your friends and relatives contact information. Even without that do not worry, they will have your data, through likes of deep linking Skype to Facebook!
It is the way of the Facebook.

RockMelt, Seek to Melt Cold Hard Browser Habits!

#RockMelt, Seek to Melt Cold Hard Browser Habits! http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/

I have been trying every browser that came in to being, hoping to find a better on. Currently I am stuck between Chromium and Firefox. I usually have multiple browser windows open and multiple tabs withing them. Firefox gets jittery sometimes with the load and Chrome does not give me everything that Firefox has. But today I came across limited release Chromium based browser called, RockMelt.

Looks like it can do more than just take you through web pages and portals. Web pages. It is what I call social browsing!. The RockMelt tells us that;
".. makes it easy for you to do the things you do every single day on the Web: share and keep up with your friends, stay up-to-date on news and information, and search. And of course, RockMelt is fast, secure, and stable because it’s built on Chromium, the open source project behind Google’s Chrome browser. It’s your browser – re-imagined and built for how you use the Web."
I signed up and you too can, sign up for early access if you are looking for a change.

Apple (Counter) Sues Motorola On Multi Touch, Multi Point And A Lot More.

#Apple (Counter) Sues #Motorola http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
What looks like a reply to Motorola filing patent infringement suit against Apple, Apple has filed two lawsuits covering total of six patents.
According to PatentlyApple, the lawsuits target mobile devices, their operating systems, user interfaces and application software used on and loaded onto these devices. Devices such as Droid, Droid 2, Droid X, Cliq, Cliq XT, BackFlip, Devour A555, Devour i1, and Charm.1 manufactured, marketed and sold by Motorola in the United States.
PatentlyApple has the whole shebang. Hope both sides lose. See below for current patent lawsuits!
