Apple iPads Gone In 60 Seconds, $60,000 Worth Of Them From Bestbuys!

$60000 Worth Of Apple iPads Stolen From Bestbuys! http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
Geohot is telling us that Best Buy located in Coconut Point, 8000 Mediterranean Drive, Estero, Florida, lost 60 to 90 Apple iPads, totaling to be about $60,000 in a pre dawn theft.

The store’s surveillance video showed three men enter the store by prying the rear door. They were all dressed in dark clothing, had their heads covered, and were wearing gloves. Upon entering the store, the men appeared to make a specific search for the iPads. They placed the iPads in a black bin and left the business. It took the thieves approximately 1 minute to complete the theft, according to reports.

The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore Takes Interactive iPad Apps To Another Level.

The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
It reminded me a bit of James and the Giant Peach, somewhat but interactivity added on. The app, The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore by Moonbot Studios is introducing a whole new side of interactive Apps.
The App may be a book to some and book plus a game to some, because you can interact and play with the characters on the book. There is also opportunities to play piano and a chance to play with food.
I am sure this is going to be a favorite of many a children ad adults.
If you need any further convincing, Moonbot Studios is lead by former Pixar animator, William Joyce

Appstore Has More Than 100,000 iPad Apps Now!

100,000 iPad Apps http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
Looks like Apple developers are going for the iPad exclusive apps. According to Macstories, Apple App store now has more than 100000 apps designated for iPad, the larger cousin of iPhone.
Since Apple iPad came into being in April 2010, (454 days ago,) Apple and it's army of developers have managed to create 100000 iPad destined Apps. These includes apps designed for iPad and iPhone apps re-released with universal updates, which allows apps to run on both the platforms.
Macstories found out that there were 100,161 apps on Appstore when checked with Appstore app on the iPad, as shown above.
Way to go Apple, even though I have discarded my iPad(original) and embraced an Asus EEE Pad Transformer, competition and ideas will always bring in a healthy mobile App ecosystem.

DELL's 7' Tablet With Slide Out Split Keyboard, Spy Shots.

DELL's 7' Tablet With Slide Out Split Keyboard http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
Every Tablet manufacturer wants to be different and DELL is no different. Looking at these newly uncovered spy shots, looks like DELL got the thinking cap on.

I can imagine wanting to type with my thumbs while holding tablet with both the hands. Currently I have truble typing on virtual keyboards, on both iPad and XOOM. I have to let go one hand in order to anything with tha tablet, let alone typing. But I do not know if I will go for DELL tablet, just for the keyboard. Currently I am waiting to grab a Asus Eee PadTransformer tablet with a keyboard as the cover, I like high resolution big screens, and those keyboards will look tad ugly on 10 inch tablets!

Android Tablets Will Overtake Apple iPads, Like Android Phones Did With iPhones : Nvidia

Android Tablets Challenge Apple's dominance in tablet market http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
Nvidia co-founder Jen-Hsun Huang at Reuters Summit has told that Android tablets powered by Nvidia processors will surpass Apple's market-leading iPad's leading position that it enjoys today. Just like the Android phones won the smartphone market share over from iPhone.
Nvidia's Huang told at the Reuters technology conference that Apple's lead in tablet computers will soon diminish with better, faster Android tablets, most of which are powered by Nvidia Tegra 2 processors.
"The Android phone took only two and a half years to achieve the momentum that we're talking about. I would expect the same thing on Honeycomb tablets,"
Apple currently enjoys the marked lead in tablets with iPads. The original iPad was a huge success and the next iteration, iPad2 has only helped the cause.
But leading manufacture's creations like Motorola XOOM, Acer's Iconia, Asus Eee Pad Transformer, Samsung's Galaxy Tab and even Barnes & Noble's Nook Color are marching forward.
It is products like Asus Eee Pad Transformer that will be the challenger for iPad dominance. With prominant capabilities and proper pricing, they become attractive to customers. Asus Eee Pad Transformer was sold out everywhere and I am waiting for the next shipment as I have passed over Motorola XOOM as my personal Android Tablet.

The upcoming Nvidia's next generation processor – codenamed Kal-El might give the Android tablets it's push against the Apple. Kal-El will boast quad-core processing and higher-resolution graphics as competitors Qualcomm (QCOM.O) and Texas Instruments (TXN.N) also gear up to launch new tablet chips.  According to Huang, the processor had already earned a place in the plans of ten major next-gen devices.
"It's got to be at least ten. We have five major phone companies and we have five major PC (manufacturers),"
Huang also mentioned that Android OS is evolving;
"As a result of so many different parties working together, the first versions tend to be a bit clumsy to roll out. However, as is the nature of these organic industries with very, very large players, you have continuous improvement at a very rapid pace, Everyone recognized the shortcomings of Honeycomb 3.0, jumped in working on Honeycomb 3.1, and if you haven't had a chance to play with it -- it's just delightful,"

Apple Introduces A Subscription Service Through App Store.

Subscription Service Through App Store. http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
Today Apple launched a subscription service through it's App Store aimed at subscribers to magazines, newspapers, videos, and music bought at App Store. Subscriptions bought at App store will sold through Apple billing system and publishers set the price and length of the subscription. Every subscription sold through App store, Apple snatches a hefty 30% that has become the industry standard.
"Our philosophy is simple, When Apple brings a new subscriber to the app, Apple earns a 30 percent share. When the publisher brings an existing or new subscriber to the app, the publisher keeps 100 percent and Apple earns nothing," said Steve Jobs.
With the wide acceptance of iPad as a media consumption device, equally on the move and at home, Magazine and newspaper subscriptions might become widely accepted as well. But looking at recent reporting of Egypt news, who wants still get news papers? They are too old and too slow. On the other hand what is going to happen when all these Android Tablets hits the market.

But Tabloids and Magazines, do still sell, every time I go to the supermarket, I get a laugh at these tabloid news displayed near checkout, just  before sighing over food prices.

apple press release;

CUPERTINO, California—February 15, 2011—Apple® today announced a new subscription service available to all publishers of content-based apps on the App Store℠, including magazines, newspapers, video, music, etc. This is the same innovative digital subscription billing service that Apple recently launched with News Corp.’s “The Daily” app.
Subscriptions purchased from within the App Store will be sold using the same App Store billing system that has been used to buy billions of apps and In-App Purchases. Publishers set the price and length of subscription (weekly, monthly, bi-monthly, quarterly, bi-yearly or yearly). Then with one-click, customers pick the length of subscription and are automatically charged based on their chosen length of commitment (weekly, monthly, etc.). Customers can review and manage all of their subscriptions from their personal account page, including canceling the automatic renewal of a subscription. Apple processes all payments, keeping the same 30 percent share that it does today for other In-App Purchases.
“Our philosophy is simple—when Apple brings a new subscriber to the app, Apple earns a 30 percent share; when the publisher brings an existing or new subscriber to the app, the publisher keeps 100 percent and Apple earns nothing,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “All we require is that, if a publisher is making a subscription offer outside of the app, the same (or better) offer be made inside the app, so that customers can easily subscribe with one-click right in the app. We believe that this innovative subscription service will provide publishers with a brand new opportunity to expand digital access to their content onto the iPad, iPod touch and iPhone, delighting both new and existing subscribers.”
Publishers who use Apple’s subscription service in their app can also leverage other methods for acquiring digital subscribers outside of the app. For example, publishers can sell digital subscriptions on their web sites, or can choose to provide free access to existing subscribers. Since Apple is not involved in these transactions, there is no revenue sharing or exchange of customer information with Apple. Publishers must provide their own authentication process inside the app for subscribers that have signed up outside of the app. However, Apple does require that if a publisher chooses to sell a digital subscription separately outside of the app, that same subscription offer must be made available, at the same price or less, to customers who wish to subscribe from within the app. In addition, publishers may no longer provide links in their apps (to a web site, for example) which allow the customer to purchase content or subscriptions outside of the app.
Protecting customer privacy is a key feature of all App Store transactions. Customers purchasing a subscription through the App Store will be given the option of providing the publisher with their name, email address and zip code when they subscribe. The use of such information will be governed by the publisher’s privacy policy rather than Apple’s. Publishers may seek additional information from App Store customers provided those customers are given a clear choice, and are informed that any additional information will be handled under the publisher’s privacy policy rather than Apple’s.
The revolutionary App Store offers more than 350,000 apps to consumers in 90 countries, with more than 60,000 native iPad™ apps. Customers of the more than 160 million iOS devices around the world can choose from an incredible range of apps in 20 categories, including games, business, news, sports, health, reference and travel.
Apple designs Macs, the best personal computers in the world, along with OS X, iLife, iWork, and professional software. Apple leads the digital music revolution with its iPods and iTunes online store. Apple is reinventing the mobile phone with its revolutionary iPhone and App Store, and has recently introduced its magical iPad which is defining the future of mobile media and computing devices.

Tablets Will Eat Into PC Sales, Says Gartner.

Tablets Like #iPad, #Samsung Galaxy Tab and others Will Eat Into PC Sales http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
World is continuing to  increase Personal computers usage in the coming year, like past years. Gartner says the new tablets will take a bite out of these forecast PC sales of 409 million units in 2011. This increase marks a 15.9 % increase from 2010.
With shrinking purses, US and Western European customers are postponing new PC purchases but fears that some may altogether forgo PCs and hug Madia Tablets. Gartner thinks closer to 10% of PC sales will be absorbed by Tablets.
Following is the press release by Garner;

STAMFORD, Conn., November 29, 2010 — Worldwide PC shipments are on pace to total 352.4 million units in 2010, a 14.3 percent increase from 2009, according to the latest preliminary forecast by Gartner, Inc. These projections are down from Gartner’s previous PC shipment forecast in September of 17.9 percent growth.2011 worldwide PC shipments are forecast to reach 409 million units, a 15.9 percent increase from 2010. This is down from Gartner’s earlier estimate of 18.1 percent growth for 2011.
These results reflect marked reductions in expected near-term unit growth based on expectations of weaker consumer demand, due in no small part to growing user interest in media tablets such as the iPad,” said Ranjit Atwal, research director at Gartner. “Over the longer term, media tablets are expected to displace around 10 percent of PC units by 2014.”
While Gartner does not regard the current dynamics in the PC market quite yet as an inflexion point, analysts do see many disruptive forces coming together that will weaken the market moving forward.
“PC market growth will be impacted by devices that enable better on-the-go content consumption such as media tablets and next-generation smartphones,” said Raphael Vasquez, research analyst at Gartner. “These devices will be increasing embraced as complements if not substitutes for PCs where voice and light data consumption are desired. It is likely that desk-based PCs will be adversely impacted over the long-term by the adoption of hosted virtual desktops, which can readily use other devices like thin clients.”
“PCs are still seen as necessities, but the PC industry's inability to significantly innovate and its overreliance on a business model predicated on driving volume through price declines are finally impacting the industry's ability to induce new replacement cycles,” said George Shiffler, research director at Gartner. “As the PC market slows, vendors that differentiate themselves through services and technology innovation rather than unit volume and price will dictate the future. Even then, leading vendors will be challenged to keep PCs from losing the device ‘limelight’ to more innovative products that offer better dedicated compute capabilities.”
In the near term, many consumers and businesses will continue to refrain from buying PCs, as they collectively rebuild their finances in the face of slower income growth, weaker employment gains and a cloudy economic outlook. Over the longer-term, users are likely to slow PC replacements and extend PC lifetimes as they turn to other devices as their primary computing platform.
Gartner analysts said there are five dynamics that are challenging the PC industry:
Emerging Markets Continue to Drive GrowthWhile we expect a continued upside in our emerging market forecast, leading to emerging markets gaining more than 50 percent of the total worldwide PC market by the end of 2011, mature markets will face mounting challenges. Furthermore, in emerging markets, there is good chance that consumers will simply leap frog PCs and move directly to alternative devices in the coming years rather than following the traditional pattern of purchasing a PC as their first computing device.
Consumer Wallet Continues to ShrinkHome mobile PCs have suffered the steepest downgrade with shipments in mature markets expected to be significantly weaker. Consumers in the U.S. and Western Europe continue to postpone purchases in the face of financial and economic uncertainty. However, Gartner said that the bigger issue for PCs in the home market is consumers temporarily, if not permanently, forgoing PC purchases in favor of media tablets.
Challenge of Emerging DevicesMedia tablet capabilities are expected to become more PC-like in the coming years, luring consumers away from PCs and displacing a significant volume of PC shipments, especially mini-notebooks. Media tablets are rapidly finding favor with PC buyers who are attracted to their more-dedicated entertainment-driven features and their instant-on capability.
Extended Life Cycle ImpactThe ascent of emerging devices will have an important indirect impact on PCs – the extension of average PC lifecycles. The effect of this ascent will be to spread traditional PC functionality over a variety of complementary devices. As this happens, analysts foresee users extending the lifetimes of PCs because there will be less need to replace them as often.
Uptake of Thin ClientsHosted virtual desktops (HVDs) are not expected to earnestly impact mature professional markets until 2012, at the earliest. Longer term, users that adopt HVDs to access their compute capabilities will do so predominantly by using refurbished PCs and thin clients. These alternative devices will displace new PC units, thereby reducing expected future desk-based shipment growth.
More information is available in the report “Forecast Alert: Worldwide PC Forecast Downgraded as PC Market Hit by Disruptive Forces”, which can be found on Gartner’s website athttp://www.gartner.com/resId=1476414.
Gartner analysts will provide a more detailed examination of the PC industry during the webinar “Gartner Preliminary PC Forecast and Market Scenarios, 4Q10” at 11:30 EST on November 30. Now you can add more to the load on AT&T networks with Netflix on iPhone and iPod touch. I think it would be enjoyable over the WiFi but I do not know about 3G as I have not had much luck with it. At least iPhone and iPod users now can stand abreast with iPad users watching Netflix movies..
The App is available at iTunes Store and Netflix members can watch TV shows or Movies.

What It Takes To Make iPads At Apple

Make iPads At Apple http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
Fake or not, working for Apple might be a good thing. FSJ says that those made iPads had to work on a machine that was inside a sealed metal box, so you couldn’t actually see what you were doing. The box itself was chained to a desk, which was bolted to the floor in a windowless, lead-sealed concrete bunker. And the workers were chained to that same desk by their ankles.  A Jonny Ive  designed Chamber pot was around for those who needed it
They also seem to have personal email read, phone calls monitored, children followed to school and interrogated to see if Mom or Dad had been talking about work.
It’s not easy to work at Apple.
Hello Google can I work on Android?  Perhaps you can ask this Steve Jobs.

iPad And The New Content Delivery Model!

http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
Andy Abramson over at VoIP Watch has again hit a nail in the spot with his post "iPad Will Bring Sending Party Pays Model To Content Providers"
Even though I, like you pay over our noses for services provided by carriers, they keep on degrading in my view. 1 million iPads in WiFi zone might not affect the 3G performance, but what if Apple manages to sell one or two million of the 3G enabled iPads soon? Add the iPhone HD to that mix!
Google paying AT&T for me to watch YouTube? well we got to see this. Someone need to build the infrastructure.
What I like to see is PG&E delivering Google fiber to home, like those electricity companies in Japan do!

Apple Takes Over Buttons! Patents Invisible Button

Apple Patents Invisible Button http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
Buttons are so over! Yes that is what I thought when read the article on the Techcrunch and that is how the article ended as well.
Apple is trying to bring it's no button cuture in to it's other money making devices, like Macbooks and other stuff. So to bring touch buttons on iPhone, iPad to the hard surfaces on macbooks, Apple is patenting invisible touch buttons on hard surfaces that appear and disappear depending on users need. When user needs a button will light up from underneath of perforated surface and switch off when not needed.
"Taken to its extreme, seamless design would have an invisible input," the application reads. "Since a metal housing is advantageous for aesthetic, environmental, and manufacturing reasons, this presents a particular challenge. One method to overcome this challenge is to include a plastic input painted to look like metal. However, this will not match the metal look and finish exactly, so the truly seamless design is not realized."

Which iPad Is For You? Out Of The Six Varients Offered.

Which iPad Is For You?  snapvoip.blogspot.com
If you are looking to get an iPad, when it ia released (or pre-order very soon) you will have to do some thinking first, rather than running to the store with cash or your credit card in hand. There are six versions of iPads!, in two categories.

The two main categories are WiFi and 3G and each of them has three versions of iPads based on the memory capacity and of course the price. Gizmodo had this nice table laid out describing all six iPads and if that is not enough, NYTimes has a post describing merits or shortcomings of each model. So follow the links to get more information.
My own personal feeling about the iPad is quite different, knowing how AT&T is, I wonder sudden influx of iPads with 3G will do to my iPhone. I hope AT&T has the infrastructure ready so I can continue to use my iPhone in current pathetic state and not make it evern worse.

iPad SDK 3.2 Beta 4 Clears Up Facts About iPad Camera And Give Some Gestures TO Developers.

iPad SDK 3.2 Beta 4 snapvoip.blogspot.com
Just about to release the iPad, Apple has cleared any doubts about iPad having a last minute camera add on to the device. There is no camera for now and we doubt there will be one till the second generation iPads! It is evident from the latest iPad SDK, it is stripping out several video-call related icons.
But if it makes feel better, Apple is providing some new gestures to the developers, like 3Tap.plist (triple-tap used to flip the display on and off ) and LongPress.plist (pop up the copy / paste menu), which were absent from the current iPhone SDK 3.1.
