Cedarville College Implements sipXecs Open Communications With eZuce.

Cedarville College Implements #sipXecs Open Communications With eZuce. http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
Cedarville College, a 3200 students home in Ohio has implemented sipXecs Open Communications to provide Unified Communications experience within the campus environment.
In addition to providing faculty, students, administrative and support staff multiple ways of interaction, the college will also serve in the sipXecs Policy Committee and sipXecs Technical Committee providing valuable input regarding education market for the eZuce products, through the SIPfoundry Higher Education Program .

"Our campus selected sipXecs because we wanted to invest in a product that allowed us to save money while facilitating collaboration with our peers. eZuce Presents An Open Source Enterprise Level Unified Communications Solution

Open Source Enterprise UC Solution, OpenUC, From eZuce http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
eZuce, a company formed by the creators of SIPFoundry, Dr. Martin Steinmann and Jerry Stabile, announced a enterprise grade UC solution, last month. Since I was away from blogging for almost a month, I missed the opportunity to present them to my readers.
SIPFoundry was one of my favorite projects and in fact my first self developed SIP Client to use with such services like free SIP Accounts, came from the sipXphone, a part of the project, even before the SIPFoundry / Pingtel days.
The project changed hands a few times but lived on, the community continued to develop the sipX project and I am glad now it is becoming a mainstream product due to eZuce.
Just like the track record of SIPFoundry, the software that eZuce promotes and supports, also have a seven years of development track record.
The solution itself provides opportunity for for companies to replace legacy PBX's and eZuce is placing itself as an alternative or replacement for Microsoft UC. But eZuce supports all the Microsoft's communications products like Outlook and Microsoft Exchange server. They also have a unique position in the role as well. EZuce sales model is completely indirect. They will support for single tier resellers, OEMs, and  Managed Service Providers (MSPs). Partners and end customers working with eZuce benefit from a fully supported product. In current incarnation, eZuce allows partners to offer a fully supported solution with standard SLA to end users, including level 3 support escalations.
The channel partners will also be at ease because, the SIPFoundry products were used by the like of NORTEL and Avaya. SIPFoundry PBX Solution powers the Avaya Software Communication System (SCS). So this startup is well grounded from the start and I am sure will have a greater role in the Unified Communications arena.

A Case For Switchvox, Another Case For Asterisk, Which One Is Yours?

The Case For Asterisk and Switchvox snapvoip.blogspot.com
Digium blog has published a very clear and nice article by Steve Sokol that speaks about virtues of both the products. Asterisk is the industry favorite Opens source telephony project and the SwitchVox is a Unified Communications system which is also based on Asterisk. The former is free and the latter is not. But there are many reasons that you may want to choose one or the other. The aricle basically ends with a clear advise;

If you’re technically inclined and want to build a communication product or solution, then Asterisk is for you.  If you’re in need of a great phone system at a great price, check out Switchvox.

"Skype for SIP" Offering Will Interoperate With Cisco Systems’ Unified Communications 500 System.

"Skype for SIP"
Yes that is what Giga Om is telling us and I am sure it will be a real boost to Skype for Business plans and Skype for SIP infrastructure. Skype partnered with Shoretel to provide similar service only a little while ago and brains at Cisco must have smelled the aroma ans now joining the barbeque party.
We have numerous Cisco equipments deployed along with Cisco Unified Communication related services and software. The trunk run right out to carriers and would love to have one of those connect to Skype backbone. The Skype for Asterisk also under the belt, I think Skype will do well. Perhaps one day UN will have to tear apart Skype for monopolistic practices.
I am really looking forward to hear the news.

While he wouldn’t get into product specifics, Silverman dropped enough hints about Skype’s enterprise future. “We are working to develop an enterprise software product that is built around productivity vs. simply cost savings,” he said. That’s a very telling statement: At present, Skype’s only utility is that it’s a cheap calling service that can leverage about 480 million subscribers and its ability to buy long distance minutes on the cheap.

Cisco teleworker / telecommuting survey, June, 2009.

Teleworker / Telecommuting Survey

"In the age of a global market, time and distance separates people and workspaces. Cisco has long recognized that telecommuting and collaborative technologies are effective in breaking down separation barriers and enabling the transition to the borderless enterprise. In addition, as demonstrated by our recent study, a properly executed program for telecommuting can be extremely effective at unlocking employee potential by increasing work-life balance, productivity and overall satisfaction."
Rami Mazid, vice president, Global Client Services and Operations, Cisco

Cisco released the results and findings of its Teleworker Survey, of about 2000 it's own workers which was actually an in-depth study of almost 2,000 company employees. The study, researched the social, economic and environmental benefits and short falls of telecommuting at Cisco. The results were not a surprise to me as a Telecommuter, there were significant increases in work-life flexibility, productivity and overall satisfaction as a result of their ability to work remotely. Personally in addition to working from home for three days of the week, I have greatly reduced international travel as well.
Cisco's Internet Business Services Group, the company's global strategic consulting arm, the company has generated an estimated annual savings of $277 million in productivity by allowing employees to telecommute and telework. In addition, with the steady adoption of enterprise-class remote connectivity solutions like Cisco® Virtual Office, the recently announced Cisco OfficeExtend, and virtual collaboration tools like Cisco WebExTM, (I am a big fan of WebEx for iPhone)Cisco anticipates that employees and employers will continue to see a rise in the benefits associated with telecommuting.

City Of Oakland Gets Unified With ShoreTel.

City of Oakland has deployed Shoretel system for Unified Communications through out the City department very successfully. The deployment has began in 2003 and after multiple pilot deployments system now cover the city, except the 911 system. Rather than me blabbering about it, I will let you watch the video and find out why the city did so. I found the video on network world. The Shoretel has a report on the system as well. Even though many news sites are reporting that Shoretel replaced a Cisco system but I have not been able to find any infomation on such system. There was a small deployment of a Cisco system in one of the departments. So far the best source is the ShoreTel's report if you are looking for details.

‘Green’ Unified Communications Contact Centre By PSI And Nortel.

MELBOURNE, Australia – Contact centre outsourcing specialist PCI is building a new unified communications contact centre facility in Melbourne using energy-efficient network solutions from Nortel* [NYSE/TSX: NT] and Platinum nPower channel partner Commander.

PCI delivers a wide-range of contact centre services for national and multinational clients, including some of Australia's largest telecommunications, banking, information technology and utility companies and is aiming to reduce their carbon footprint with Nortel's unified voice, data and wireless network at its Melbourne headquarters.

The 6,000 square metre greenfield site will be fitted with an all-new, fully IP-enabled network supporting 715 active agents and up to 850 concurrent users that will enable the company the flexibility to manage its contact centre agents' activities regardless of their physical location, allowing them to work from anywhere while retaining their same phone number, caller groups and access to network resources.

"As the first point-of-call for many of our clients' customers, we have a massive responsibility to be 'always available' for incoming calls, and to be able to get the right people to answer those calls as quickly as possible," says Jason May, general manager, Integration, PCI. "From a technology perspective we also have a responsibility to maintain an efficient and sustainable work environment, and as a result a major determinant of the technology we used for our new facility was its efficiency in terms of power draw and emissions."

"Moving to new premises also gave us the opportunity to extend this theme to the way we manage our call agents, taking into account things like travel time and physical location," says May. "Nortel's unified communications solutions were not only ideal for this purpose, with location-independent calling and presence giving us far more control and flexibility over agents' whereabouts, but Nortel's energy-efficiency ratings are also far superior to those of its competitors."

"As with any large-scale technology rollout one of the biggest costs is the energy to power and cool the equipment," says Phil Allan, CEO PCI. "Nortel demonstrated such a clear lead in this regard with its energy-frugal equipment that the savings in ongoing operation and lower TCO were reasons alone to choose its solution, not counting all the other benefits it offered."

"We live in an age where Hyperconnectivity – single users with multiple networked devices like PDAs, smart phones and computers – is changing the nature of the contact centre to the point where call agents can no longer limit themselves to voice and e-mail interaction to service their customers properly," says Mark Fioretto, general manager, Enterprise Solutions, Australia and New Zealand, Nortel.

"A fully integrated, unified communications network empowers the agent to field and direct any type of call from any customer, using any device or media, from a unified desktop client or mobile interface," says Fioretto.

The Nortel solution for PCI incorporates the latest Communication Server 1000E IP PBX, supported by a highly resilient Nortel Ethernet Routing Switch (ERS) network delivering Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) and gigabit speeds to every desktop. Wireless LAN coverage is provided by the Nortel Multimedia WLAN 2300 solution enabling secure wireless connectivity to all staff.

The solution also includes Nortel's Call Pilot unified messaging and Communication Control Toolkit, which enables simplified integration of the Contact Centre and PCI's line of business applications. CallPilot further saves PCI resources by providing employees with unified messaging and contact center voice services from a single server. End-to-end deployment, integration and on-going support services are being delivered by Commander's Advanced technical services team.

A recent report from Tolly Group found that certain of Nortel's network switches were more energy efficient than certain competitive products1.

SIP / SIMPLE-XMPP Developer Workshop 2008

SIP/SIMPLE and XMPP share a lot of concepts but at the same time they differ in many aspects. At the same time, both these protocols are the leading medium for voice, video, IM and Universal convergence. The unified Communication that many are touting today is the interconnection between these mediums of communications and creating a medium bringing users together via many a paths.
There have been many a workshops for SIP and XMPP but most of the time they were held separately and the users needed to bring the knowledge together as needed. But you have a chance see both these protocols, SIP/SIMPLE and XMPP at a single workshop. The workshop aims to bring together people with large expertise in both protocols, interested in development, testing and deployment of IP/SIMPLE-XMPP solutions. Innovation, being the top mantra, the participants will be able to learn test and innovate and finally bring open source projects to private or public enterprises.
