I am sure you have seen many a infographic about Android fragmentation followed by lengthy discussions. Android fragmentation matters to the entire Android ecosystem and some see it as a blessing and some see it as a curse. And there are people who are on the fence seeing it as both.
It is good to look at the issue from the view point of an App developer, OpenSignalMaps, in this case. They have analyzed the Android device data of Android devices (681,900) that downloaded OpenSignalMaps. They have categorized the devices by Brand, Model, screen size and most importantly, the Android version.
I relly like the presentation and only two things that jumped at me was;
Samsung is the Brand with 40% and that 2012 is the year of the Gingerbread.

ZTE Skate is Monte Carlo http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/ The ZTE Skate is coming to Orange with a new moniker, Monte Carlo, just like ZTE San Francisco (ZTE Blade) Orange has decided to drop the ZTE, perhaps to drop the Chinese affiliations. If that is the case, don't worry about it Orange, all the iPhones and iPads are made in China too. They don't advertise it, but everyone knows it. There were even deaths of workers associated with iPhone. But with all the name droppings the phone has become exclusive to Orange according to Inquirer, who interviewed Orange. Name calling and business politics aside, the phone seem to be a pretty good contender to San Francisco. With its 4.3" (480x800) touchscreen is already larger than the San Francisco's 3.5in display. The Monte Carlo also comes with bunch of other features, a rear facing 5MP camera, WiFi, Bluetooth and G-sensors that will make it very appealing if the price is right, like San Francisco, aka ZTE Blade. Just like the article on ext4 on Gingerbread, Android developer blog is continuing the series of articles for the developer on Android 2.3, Gingerbread.
The latest is about improving performance by policy (ing) your app with the help of a new API introduced with Gingerbread, strictmode.
Since by default everything is allowed, developers are to set policy on thread what is not allowed to do on the particular thread. Some of the flags you can enable in the thread policy include:
detect disk writes
detect disk reads
detect network usage
on a violation: log
on a violation: crash
on a violation: dropbox
on a violation: show an annoying dialog
There are also number of hooks that strictmode has, mostly in the places that hit the disk IO,
(yes you are still bound to disk, even on diskless Android phones. You can't depend on the fast flash or filesystem to take care of traffic management. The original article has better explanation of disks on the phones and two good links explaining the phenomena.)
On Android devices, the main thread (UI Thread) takes care of callbacks and lifecycle events making it easier on the developers. But at the same time we need to realize, a bunch of others are also using the main thread to do animations, scrolls, and also flings process their animations by callbacks on the main thread. That is a lot of traffic and certainly need policy (ing) the traffic.
The article tells us of 16ms window we have to react to events that occur on the main thread and if you do not respond in time, your app will stutter, like I do when too many inputs clobber my senses.
So things like network requests on the main thread is discouraged and actually will be prohibited with the upcoming Honeycomb release. So better start getting ready for Honeycomb SDK, or at least put a big yellow note on what ever you put yellow notes on.
The recommended way to utilize strictmode is to enable it during the development cycle, learn and address what ever the bottlenecks you encounter, and turn it off before you ship your app or the game.

With any OS, one of the most important aspects is the data safety and Android OS is no different. Google and the Android team are also looking into making the Android OS more reliable. So they are letting us know the changes the Gingerbread is bringing. Starting with Gingerbread, Android file system is going to change to the ext4 leaving behind the YAFFS. ext4 is what I am using on my Linux boxes as well as what is underneath the Google data centers. Your Google Nexus S will certainly have ext4 file system.
So how does the game change with the new file system? Tim Bray has written a very nice post about what we should do to keep our data safe.
As anyone familiar with Linux file systems and writing programs to run on them, have learned to use a low level system call, fsync() to make sure that your data is synced with the permanent storage. Tim goes to lengths to explain about the importance of not relying on write() to send your data to file system. (If you are using SharedPreferences or SQLite, exclusively, you have less to worry as Android is taking care of the buffering) Otherwise you need to make sure that your data get written properly. The guarantee about buffering you thought you had is all gone with the introduction of ext4.
I don't really know about the Google Nexus S phone yet, if it is possible to remove the battery, (the Google Chrome Notebook CR-48 does yet CR-48 DATA is always safe :). So think about us users, who pull the battery out, in many occasions, to shut the system down by pulling the battery out, be the system be a single of multi tasking. Nexus S will be sold unlocked and carrier-independent initially through Best Buy stores in the U.S. starting from December 16th the phone will arrive in UK after December 20th at Carphone Warehouse stores.
The phone itself is very impressive compared to the previous Google Nexus offering. One thing I already know is that, this phone going to be mine, not my colleagues.
The capacitive touch super AMOLED display of the phone (800 x 480) is contoured and is protected by glass with anti finger print coating. The phone is powered by 1GHz Cortx A8 (Hummingbird) processor and has 16GB memory on board. The 129g (4.55 OZ) phone has a bunch of sensors and feedback devices like Haptic vibration, three axix gyroscope, accelerometer, digital compass, proximity sensor and a light sensor. It also has Quad-band GSM: 850, 900, 1800, 1900, Tri-band HSPA: 900, 2100, 1700, HSPA type: HSDPA (7.2Mbps) HSUPA (5.76Mbps), Wi-Fi 802.11 n/b/g, and Bluetooth 2.1+EDR for communication. The phone is powered by Android 2.3 (Gingerbread). It is made by Samsung this time!
But the most interesting feature is the Near Field communication (NFC) which allows the phone to act as a credit card, a BART ticket or a bank card, just like the phones now being used in Japan. I am sure this Android phone, if it ever reaches Japan, will certainly be a hit.
Battery is also pretty good with talk time up to 6.7 hours on 3G (14 hours on 2G) and standby time up to 17.8 days on 3G (29.7 days on 2G). It is a 1500 mAH Lithium Ion battery.

Since we wrote about LG Star this morning, we have learned a bit more and got hold of a video. LG Star sports a 4-inch screen, an 8MP camera which is also capable of 1080p video capture, assisted by a LED flash. That is not all as far as the cameras go LG Star or LGP990 also comes with a front-facing camera for on the go video conferencing, a 1500 mAH battery, and a large Google logo on the back meaning the Android OS that comes with is virtually stock.But everyone think that the Froyo that is on the device will get replaced by Gingerbread, Android 3.0 by the time LG Star hit the shelves. Google has put up a large ginger bread man in the lawn where the other sweet stuffs were. Even though I drive around this area, I am yet to see the Gingerbread Man, may be next time I will take my camera with me.
But this time, we have a question! Is Gingerbread man tied to Android 3.0 or Android 2.3 as you can see from below, there seem to be a Android 2.3 surfaced while discussing fixing some WAP issues.

According to a report published on an Israeli news paper, Google will launch it's much rumored music service alongside the upcoming Android OS iteration, Android 3.0 codenamed, Gingerbread.
The rumors began with Google's purchase of music streaming company, Simplify Media. It seems Google think very highly of mobile music services.
According to Android product manager Gaurav Jain, Google's music service will launch alongside Android 3.0, codenamed Gingerbread. With over 160,000 Android based phones being activated, everyday, it is understandable the focus on mobile music but I am sure Google has other ideas for music as well. Apple on the other hand plans to deploy a cloud based version of iTunes soon. The way things are going on at Apple, it might be clouded iTunes. Hoping people will stream music direct to the devices, rather than storing them on the phones. But then, with 16GB or 32GB storage in their hands, would users trust their music to AT&T's flimsy network? It might make a difference, if the other rumor, that iPhone will be available on Verizon, is right. Then again, there were people, 1.7 Million at least, who bought the iPhone 4 with it's problems.
