Philippaine NTC Proposes New VoIP Rules

MANILA, Philippines--Complaints from some voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) service providers have prompted the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) to propose additional rules for VoIP services.

In an interview, NTC Deputy Commissioner Jorge Sarmiento said the proposed rules would tackle easing the requirements for interconnection agreements that VoIP providers are required to enter into before offering their services.

The current rules require would-be VoIP providers to negotiate separate interconnection agreements with each telephone network.

Will Google Phone or Gphone play a role in OpenSocial?

With all the talk we have flowing around about Google's OpenSocial that sent it's stocks soring past $700 mark
, I think that Google Phone also has a big place in this game. Perhaps that is one of the packages that Google might be selling to wireless carriers. Just imagine the amount of test messaging and contact traffic that a few Social networks might generate!
Perhaps the idea of the API for was born out of designing apps for Google phone. I think I am stretching in all directions but read the Press release on WeSeePeople, and you might get your own ideas about where Google is heading with new tools.

Garmin Goes After Tele-Atlas

A few posts ago RavenII wondered "Does Location Matter? refering to Nokia's plans on NAVTEQ, Looks like It seems to be. GPS giants are running around and buying competitors or technology providers. In the latest move, Garmin will offer to buy the digital maps company Tele Atlas for €2.3 billion (US$3.3 billion) in a move to outbid rival TomTom International, a big maker of in-car navigation systems.

Garmin said Wednesday it had notified the Tele Atlas board that it will make an offer of €24.50 per share in cash for all its outstanding shares. It plans to make the offer by Dec. 24, the date TomTom's offer is set to expire. TomTom offered to buy Tele Atlas in July for about €2 billion. Garmin said its offer was 15 percent higher than TomTom's, and is a premium of 48 percent over Tele Atlas' share price just before TomTom made its offer.

Is Google Betting on Every Horse so that it will not Lose in the Mobile Race?

According to an article by a team of analysts on Reuters tries to explain the fate of Google with Gphone. The article seems to be of a value at first glance. But once you read through you get the feeling that you knew the information already. It is some thoughts about Gphone that the analysts do not know about, (they did not get a single word from anyone directly saying yes or no) but a good article if you messed the news about Google Phone for last few weeks.
There are many other countries than do not restrict the phones used on cellular networks. So I think all these analysts are thirsty for information like we all are. Come on Google, shed some light on us.
I have had better news from Reuters. The Analysis!

Will Google Phone Gphone have Verizon on It?

I just read most funny (to me) story about Gphone! If this is the case I think I will not will have the Gphone, even though I am waiting for it! It seems this Grumor originated with a talk from Verizon Chief Operating Officer Denny Strigl admitted on Monday during an investor call that the phone company has been in talks with a lot of companies, including Google.
But they could easily spoken about integrating Google search on Verizon phones. Well... here is the news com article.

AT&T Expands AVOICS, Wholesale VoIP Services

AT&T Announces Wholesale VOIP Service Expansion

Boston, Massachusetts, October 30, 2007

At the Fall VON 2007 conference, AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T) today announced the expanded availability of AT&T Voice Over IP Connect Service (AVOICS). AVOICS is the flagship wholesale Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) offer for U.S. service providers that want IP-based connectivity to AT&T's global IP network for long distance call termination. For more than 10 years, AT&T has provided wholesale VoIP solutions, which address the U.S. domestic and international termination needs of service providers with a variety of connectivity options.

AVOICS provides unbranded and unbundled transport over the AT&T network, as well as termination of international and U.S. domestic traffic. Customers connect to the service via AT&T's Managed Internet Service (MIS)/Multiprotocol Label Switching-Private Network Transport (MPLS-PNT) service, which provides class-of-service voice quality, key security elements and advanced network reliability. AVOICS is highly scalable and accepts U.S.-originated domestic outbound (1+) calls and international outbound (011+) calls by using Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) signaling.

AT&T has expanded the scale and scope of its wholesale VoIP services, and is now offering AVOICS to customers that want the service with T1, T3 and OCX connectivity as well as meeting a market demand for a customer managed model. Initially introduced with limited availability, AVOICS is now available to all of AT&T's U.S.-based wholesale customers. The expansion of AVOICS specifically includes:

  • Increased capacity in the VoIP network infrastructure to meet customer traffic demand
  • Increased connectivity from T1 to T3...all the way to OC48
  • Moving from an AT&T Managed Router Model to a Customer Managed Router Model to monitor the circuit
  • Native and non-native IP traffic on the same circuit with unique IP signaling addresses

"AT&T continues to be a significant global player in wholesale VoIP and is enhancing its portfolio to continually meet evolving customer needs," said Cindy Whelan, senior analyst, Business Network Services; Wholesale Services for Current Analysis Inc. "AT&T's experts work closely with customers to customize converged solutions that support their unique VoIP requirements."

AT&T has had more than a decade of wholesale VoIP success already in large part through its pioneer offer, Global Hubbing IP Access (GHIA), which will continue to play a key role in providing service to operators that carry substantial volumes of international traffic. With GHIA, customers send their VoIP traffic to the AT&T network for VoIP termination. If no VoIP termination is available, a Time Division Multiplexing (TDM) conversion is made to cost-effectively deliver calls over AT&T's highly reliable and secure network. AT&T also offers AT&T IP Toll-Free service to wholesale customers for use in their own large call centers, supporting their evolution to the contact center of the future.

"As a world leader in voice and IP networking, AT&T is helping our wholesale customers evolve to the next generation of converged communications through our suite of VoIP services," said Sherry Charles, vice president, Wholesale Marketing, AT&T Operations Inc. "We recognize that our customers need to support both native IP and TDM capabilities. The breadth of VoIP offerings that we supply enable service providers to cost-effectively broaden their footprint and enhance their bandwidth through our robust MPLS-based network with the proven reliability and security that they expect from a global networking leader."

AT&T's suite of wholesale VoIP services connects customers to one of the world's most advanced, secure and powerful global IP backbone networks, lessening the chance for disruption or delays. AT&T's VoIP customers are confident selling services that ride on AT&T's highly reliable network.

As a global leader, AT&T delivers a full portfolio of end-to-end reliable and highly secure network, voice, data and IP solutions to the six wholesale industry segments that it serves: carriers, wireless operators, cable providers, systems integrators, Internet service providers and content providers. AT&T is one of the largest wholesale transport and communications service providers in the world — maintaining connections to more than 400 carriers in more than 220 countries and territories. AT&T brings value to wholesale customers through its global networking, industry-leading portfolio and vertical expertise.

Google Phone Might Come Our Sooner

The Wall Street Journal carried an article about Google Powered Phone, (Google Phone, Gphone) today. But the Journal is basically saying what we have been saying for some time now, first article here, and then the update here, both with photos that were mocked up Google phone. Even the first article got DUGG. Of course Google's support of open Broadband, Open access to 700MHz spectrum may have had something to do with Google Phone.

The article cites unnamed sources as saying Google has been talking to Taiwan's HTC and South Korea's LG Electronics about making phones that will run the Google mobile OS.
But I am yet to find a real Gphone photo.
Google might select T-Mobile, supposedly the most consumer-friendly of the major U.S. cellular carriers, as the Google phone's wireless operator of choice. The Google based phones are expected to wrap together several Google applications like its search engine, Google Maps, YouTube and Gmail, that are already available on some mobile devices. The most radical element of the plan, though, is Google's push to make the phones' software "open" right down to the operating system, say Linux!, the layer that controls applications and interacts with the hardware. That means independent software developers would get access to the tools they need to build additional phone features.

Does Location Matter?

I came across a post by Larry Lang on Blogs@Cisco, SP360, Service Provider Blog about Nokia acquiring Navteq. Both the companies are very familiar to me. I use Nokia phone, Internet Tablet (N800) and Software from Navteq, last two for a GIS mapping project.
Larry goes in to explain about location based services and how it affects both service providers and receivers. I got a document on Location based services that found a place among my GIS documents. I enjoyed the article.
Larry, This summer I was in Japan and the lack of ties was really noticeable but I found out it was due to "Cool Biz" campaign.

Do We Have Broadband Maps?

Today we have very highly advanced mapping systems. The Internet based Mapping has given boost to mapping technology and it continues to grow. I can zoom on in most locations of the world.
But where is our broadband map? Although FCC have some data on broadband availability, FCC does not have a comprehensive data on availability and data, yet there policies made everyday that impact the broadband availability.
Individual States like Kentucky has already developed maps. (Click on the above map to see a large version of the map). California is supposedly developing one according the Cisco High Tech Policy Blog article that made me think about this.
The Ideal Map would show us where broadband is available and the speeds (Some people think those old ISDN (128K) services are broadband) and available providers.

Deltathree expands to Canada

NEW YORK, Oct. 29, 2007 (PRIME NEWSWIRE) -- deltathree, Inc., a leading provider of SIP-based Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) solutions for service providers and consumers worldwide, today announced that it will be offering Canadian inbound phone numbers, otherwise known as direct inward dialing (DID) numbers, to its reseller, service provider and direct-to-consumer clients. deltathree's ability to provide 9-1-1 services in Canada was made possible by its long-standing partnership with Intrado, the core provider of North America's 9-1-1 emergency communications network. Per the regulations of the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission, all VoIP subscribers in the country with the ability to make and receive calls must be equipped with 9-1-1 service. Therefore, with this new 9-1-1 capability deltathree is able to expand its inbound calling offers to include Canada.

"We are excited to be offering Canadian inbound phone numbers to our clients," stated Yaron Globus, deltathree's Vice President of Operations. "Our initiative with Intrado further defines our commitment to serve the North American market with innovative VoIP services that are in accordance to regional regulations. Clients are now empowered with yet another element of deltathree's service with which to grow their businesses and personal relationships."

deltathree was an early adopter of Intrado's 9-1-1 services in the United States, and continues to lead the industry as one of the first VoIP service providers to utilize its emergency services in Canada. This new initiative with Intrado emphasizes deltathree's ongoing focus on public policy and safety measures when launching new services to its clients.

deltathree's Reseller and Hosted Consumer VoIP Solution clients will now be able to further develop their businesses in North America with of the ability to utilize Canadian DID numbers. Customers of joip, deltathree's newly formed consumer brand that powers the VoIP services of Panasonic's new GLOBARANGE hybrid phone, can now have Canadian inbound phone numbers to stay closer to their friends and family in the country. GLOBARANGE phone owners automatically become part of the global joip community, where members can call each other around the world for free. A joip user can also obtain an inbound phone number representative of the region where most of his or her family and friends live. In this manner, friends and family outside of the joip community can call the joip user locally, giving them significant cost savings while allowing the joip user yet another way to strengthen relationships.

VoIP and UC Best Practices Webinar

Security and managing threats are the last thing you want to consider when you are bringing up a Unified Communications (UC) project or Enterprise wide VoIP deployment. Because you would think that the security and firewalls already enabled will take care of and this sort of things will come around when necessary.
But the potential security implications of extending their VoIP/UC network over public and/or untrusted networks need to be addressed in very unique way. VoIP/UC threats are very different from data threats, and your usual firewalls and security measures might allow hackers to carry out spoofing and denial-of-service attacks, unwanted reboots, unauthorized toll calls (toll fraud), and to take over the device to either steal or delete confidential data.
(There were two hackers who made more than 500,000 calls through well known VoIP service providers.)

So to deploy VoIP/UC securely, there are a number of security best practices that must be followed to prevent attacks and minimize risk.
Best practices exist that allow enterprises to benefit from UC and maintain secure networks. These best practices are the topic of an upcoming Webinar, “VoIP Security Best Practices: Preventing Attacks and Managing Risk,” hosted by Sipera Systems.

Tuesday
November 6, 2007
2:00pm ET
11:00am PT

The Webinar will guide you through;
  • the unique threats that target the enterprise VoIP/UC networks and users;
  • the new VoIP/UC security best practices and the data security ones needed for VoIP/UC;
  • the shortcomings of existing data security products in satisfying all best practices; and
  • the requirements for a comprehensive VoIP/UC security solution.

3Skypephone is ready to tackle the world

3Skypephone, that we spoke about here and again here has more info now. I was happy to hear about that it will operate in other markets than UK. But it does not look like US is one of the markets.
What is required to use the phone for free Skype calls is, if you are a Pay As You Go user, the just pay (top up) every month to keep your phone active.
It's really easy to use, too. Just hit the Skype button, which is very big on the phone (see Photo) to connect to more than 246 million users on the Skype network and away you go. For as long as you like. Without paying a penny extra.
According to the site, The 3 Skypephone doesn't just help you talk and send instant messages – it's also a music megastore, a mobile TV and Mobile Web Browser.
If I am in England (I did spend some time at Cambridge, a while ago) I certainly would get a phone. Most hassle free way to use Skype, do not have to worry about not being a super node, share my bandwidth with other users or get blocked by providers.

Another way to get users to use voice or VoIP. SpinVox has managed to do what other Voice or VoIP providers failed to notice. Get people to blog or twitter over voice. I think I wrote about spinvox technology being used with Skype to blog. Wonder why I did not hear about it much?

Brasil Telecomm Extends the Use of Oracle® Communications Suite to Support Mobile and Fixed-Line Services

Brasil Telecom, one of Brazil's leading wireless and fixed-line communications providers, has extended its use of Oracle(r) Communications Order and Service Management, Oracle Communications Inventory Management and Oracle Communications Service Activation - all part of the Oracle Service Fulfillment Suite - to help accelerate service delivery for wireless pre- and post-paid voice customers, as well as fixed-line data customers.

Oracle Communications' service fulfillment suite applications, selected over competing solutions, will help Brasil Telecom sustain its growth amidst Brazil's deregulated and ever-expanding communications market. By consolidating multiple provisioning systems onto a single, unified operational support system (OSS) that integrates order management, inventory management and service activation, Brasil Telecom expects to reduce capital and operating expenses, improve customer service and accelerate time to market for new services.

"In order to continue to meet the demand for next-generation mobile and IP services, we needed to streamline our provisioning processes to ensure rapid time to revenue and a seamless customer experience," said Sergio Costa, IT Manager, Brasil Telecom. "Our extension of Oracle will allow us to automate the entire provisioning process, reduce order fallout and maintain an accurate view of our network and service inventory. This, in turn, will enable us to increase capacity to process orders and reduce our capital expenditures as we transform our network to IP."

"As Brazil's communications market grows, there is vast opportunity for innovative providers to increase market share through convergent, next-generation services," said David Sharpley, vice president marketing and alliances, Oracle Communications. "Oracle's service fulfillment suite will provide Brasil Telecom with the tools to expand its customer base and continue to launch new services quickly."

Oracle Service Fulfillment Suite automates the order-to-activate provisioning cycle by integrating key service fulfillment processes, including back-office order orchestration, network and service inventory management, service activation and configuration management. It helps service providers:

* Streamline and maximize efficiencies in the overall service fulfillment cycle
* Simplify the costly and complex process of delivering bundled services over multiple technologies
* Accurately manage and track physical and logical network elements and services
* Address the business challenges associated with transitioning to next-generation mobile and IP-based networks.

Scalable GoogleTalk

Although in the back channels of news and talks about communications, Google talk has gone through many a changes and challenges. Two of those were integration with GMail and Orkut, both of which I use extensively.
These integrations provided unique scalability challenges to Google Talk team and had to handle a sudden increase in very large number of users. But they have fared very well and one of the Engineers, Reza Behforooz, has done a presentation at the Google Scalability Conference
a while ago. But the lessons learned might help any project that will require to scale to large number of users in a very short time.
Following is a video at Google Video.

Jajah joins EMOBILE and lands in Japan

One of my favorite IP Telephony companies, a disruptive one at that, is expanding. Jajah has signed a new contract with a Japanese Mobile broadband provider EMOBILE to provide VoIP over Mobile broadband in Japan.

The client developed for VoMB, Voice over Mobile Broadband, uses the data channel to deleiver the voice connection. If you have ever been to Japan, you know how widely mobile phones are used and how widely they are developed. Some people do not have land lines and depends on Mobile phone for all the communication needs. It is the land where fiber to home, 100MB bi directional for less than $100 a month.

Following is the news release;

CTIA Wireless I.T. and Entertainment 2007 - JAJAH announced today that its new JAJAH Mobile software client now enables voice-over-mobile-broadband calls in Japan with mobile broadband operator EMOBILE. The U.S. Senate has approves a seven year Internet tax ban extension

The U.S. Senate has approved legislation extending a moratorium on state Internet access taxes for seven years.

With only days left before the Internet tax ban was set to expire, the Senate reached a compromise between lawmakers who proposed a shorter extension and those who insisted it should be made permanent.

"By keeping the Internet tax-free and affordable, Congress can encourage Internet use for distance learning, telemedicine, commerce and other important services," Republican Sen. Ted Stevens, of Alaska, said in a statement on Thursday night.

The vote came about two weeks after the House of Representatives approved a four-year extension of the Internet tax ban.

The two chambers must work out their differences on the bill before a final version can be approved and signed by President George W. Bush.

VoIP Education and Training Needed for Sales People

I know you can get training on Asterisk at Digium, where education material and courses are provided for technicians, developers and self learners like me. But I could not find any sales training. Perhaps I did not look hard enough.
Shoretel gives training across the board and also sales training for channel partners. This trend goes to most of the companies that provide VoIP services and hardware. But does it applies to all companies? Do these companies like Vonage, Skype understand the value of educated sales people? I guess not. Although not something I really think about, a post by one my favorite bloggers got me thinking. Yes, a lot of people are ignorant when it comes to VoIP.
Russell Shaw at ZDNet has put it out interestingly...
"I have my own theory as to why this is. There’s plenty of vendor-supplied training and support from the H-P’s of the world. But to my knowledge, there aren’t alot of Vonage, Skype, Packet8, etc. support types offering sales clinics to Frys, MicroCenter, CompUSA or BestBuy types."

I believe a lot in education. So much that My best motto is "Educate yourself, Never Graduate" (the never graduate is not really true, but I remained at the university.)

So People, get your heads together teach those who does your selling.

3 UK and Skype VoIP for Mobile Users is affirmed

The rumors that were reported everywhere and here seem to hold some truth. 3 UK has confirmed about the deal and pricing structure.
But we ware unable to see any finer details details about the deal as they are holding it close to chest until October 30th when they will announce it. The handset, "white Phone", also will be launched on Monday and available in-store by Thursday, next week.
But expected pricing for the phone service is 12 British Pounds (Duh) per month or pay as you go.

The Phone it self not a end to end VoIP Phone. It is a Hybrid cellular and VoIP phone system. Hybrid mean that the Phone will connect to 3 over regular cellular or mobile line and there it switch over to VoIP (Skype) for the rest of the call. So It will also make the phone unusable elsewhere outside 3's reach.

Vonage and Others were Warned about SIP ID Theft, Eavesdropping and Other Exploits

Sipera, the VoIP security firm that I saw first at BlackHat 2007 has warned VoIP firms before disclosing the vulnerabilities. There are multiple vulnerabilities, advisories and they are listed here.

The tests focused specifically of residential and SMB VoIP service and equipment. I was surprised to find strong authentication, signaling security, and media encryption were lacking, looks like everybody is following Microsoft. Get it Out there first and then we fix it as troubles jump up.

So what does these vulnerabilities do to users? spoofing, eavesdropping, and remote exploits are some of the possibilities.

I will write later today about what you should be looking in VoIP Security.

Following is the news release by Sipera;

Richardson, TX, October 23, 2007 – Sipera VIPER™ Lab, operated by Sipera Systems, the leader in comprehensive VoIP/UC security solutions, today disclosed multiple threat advisories for users of VoIP services and equipment from Vonage, Globe7 and Grandstream. Among other threats, unwitting VoIP users face eavesdropping, spam, spoofing and denial-of-service (DoS) attacks. Full details on these vulnerabilities are posted as an educational security service to Sipera’s customers and the general public at http://www.sipera.com/viper.

Sipera VIPER Lab determined the Vonage VoIP Motorola Phone Adapter (VT 2142-VD) and Vonage service implementations leave users vulnerable to a form of VoIP identity theft, allowing hackers to take over a user’s phone service with a “registration replay attack,” then make and receive calls while impersonating the victim. Incomplete security practices, such as not encrypting traffic, open Vonage users to eavesdropping on private voice and video communications. Hackers can also send multiple SIP INVITE messages to a user, an Internet version of “ringing the phone off the hook” which creates a DoS attack. Leveraging these vulnerabilities, remote attackers can also send malicious messages directly to Vonage users, subjecting them to spam, social engineering and VoIP scams.

“These vulnerabilities create serious privacy and service availability issues for users,” said Krishna Kurapati, Sipera founder/CTO and head of Sipera VIPER Lab. “Vonage, Globe7 and Grandstream customers can no longer assume that their VoIP providers are automatically securing their services, but they should demand best security practices be followed as a condition of becoming a customer. Sipera VIPER Lab will continue to proactively identify VoIP threats and assist VoIP providers to implement best security practices before attacks occur.”

Sipera VIPER Lab also found issues with European provider Globe7’s online account access, as a result of utilizing unsecured connections and employing a weak encryption scheme. This allows hackers to access confidential name, password and account balance data, as well as steal VoIP service to make and receive calls, masked as a legitimate Globe7 user. Likewise, Sipera VIPER Lab established the Grandstream HandyTone-488 PSTN-to-VoIP adapter is vulnerable to buffer overflows and fragmented packet attacks. By sending a specially crafted SIP INVITE message to public IP addresses, attackers can disconnect legitimate Grandstream users.

Sipera VIPER Lab is comprised of experienced VoIP security researchers operating globally 24/7/365. Since its inception in 2003, Sipera VIPER Lab has identified thousands of vulnerabilities and security threats which include fuzzing, floods and distributed floods, spoofing, stealth attacks and spam. VIPER Lab research is used to continuously improve the Sipera IPCS products that protect, control and enable real-time unified communications for enterprises and service providers. Sipera VIPER Lab also recently launched a blog to discuss ongoing VoIP attacks and VoIP/UC vulnerabilities at http://www.sipera.com/viper/blog.

Global Crossing Expands VoIP Local Service to Mexico and to 21 Counties in The USA

FLORHAM PARK, N.J., Oct. 25 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Global Crossing , a leading global IP solutions provider, today announced it has once again broadened the scope and reach of its Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services for customers around the world by extending its Global Crossing VoIP Local Service(TM) to 16 major metropolitan cities in Mexico and nearly 400 additional cities in the United States. The addition of Mexico brings to 21 the total number of countries worldwide where the service is offered. In the U.S., the company expanded availability of VoIP Local Service to nearly 400 additional cities, including Las Vegas, Salt Lake City, and Tucson, bringing that total to more than 1,400 nationwide.

Initially, Global Crossing will be serving 16 metropolitan markets in Mexico with VoIP Local Service, including Mexico City, Guadalajara, Puebla, Leon and Monterrey. Global Crossing VoIP Local Service also is available in Argentina, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Peru, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States. A complementary offer, Global Crossing VoIP Outbound(TM), is available from 29 countries around the world and provides the consistency customers require from global services.

"Mexico is an important growth market for Global Crossing, and customers are clamoring for convenient, feature-rich local VoIP services," said Al DiGabriele, vice president of network applications services. "Global Crossing continues to expand the reach of this critical capability into key markets across the world. We'll continue to use our secure, reliable global IP network to support multinational customers -- and the carriers that serve them -- in need of these essential business applications."

"The geographic expansion of Global Crossing VoIP Local Service in the U.S. and Mexico further demonstrates Global Crossing's strong position as a global VoIP provider to both the carrier and enterprise market," stated Will Stofega, senior analyst at IDC. "We're still at the tip of the iceberg with the uptake of VoIP services in this market of projected double-digit growth."

IDC estimates 63 percent growth from 2005 to 2011 in IP trunking services in the U.S. market, which is indicative of the significant growth opportunities across the various categories of carrier and enterprise VoIP services.

Global Crossing VoIP Local Service is an inbound local service that provides nationwide Direct Inward Dialing/Direct Dial Inward functionality through a single IP interconnection. The service lets customers originate traffic on the public switched telephone network in different countries. Traffic is then converted to VoIP on Global Crossing's network and delivered to the customer's IP network. VoIP Local Service also can eliminate traditional time division multiplexing, private line and foreign exchange service fees by providing a single IP connection to serve multiple markets.

Global Crossing's global, fully meshed MPLS-based network ensures that VoIP calls are delivered with minimal latency, packet loss and jitter -- a consistent and predictable call quality not possible with voice services based on public Internet transport. More than 1.3 billion IP interconnected minutes per quarter are processed on Global Crossing's voice backbone network, or VoIP core. This represents a 73 percent year-over-year increase from the third quarter of 2006 to the same period in 2007. IP interconnected minutes now represent 21 percent of total minutes on Global Crossing's VoIP backbone.

Vonage Settles the patent lawsuit with Verizon

Vonage Settles the patent lawsuit with Verizon as well. May be this was inspired by the settlement Vonage did earlier with Sprint Nextel Company. I hope the can also address the AT&T lawsuit and move on to do real VoIP IP Telephony business.

Following is the news release;

HOLMDEL, N.J., Oct. 25 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- In June 2006, Verizon Services Corp. brought a lawsuit against Vonage Holdings Corp. to enforce several Verizon patents relating to Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services.

In March 2007, a jury held that Vonage is infringing three valid Verizon patents. The jury awarded $58 million in damages. The trial judge subsequently issued an injunction which was stayed pending Vonage's appeal.

In September 2007, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit upheld the trial court's decisions on infringement, validity, and injunction as to two of the Verizon patents (the '574 and '711) and remanded as to the third patent (the '880). Vonage filed a petition for rehearing which is pending in the Court of Appeals.

Today the parties have agreed to resolve the patent lawsuit. The terms of the resolution depend on how the Court of Appeals decides Vonage's pending petition for rehearing regarding two of the Verizon patents (the '574 and '711). If Vonage wins rehearing on either the '574 or '711 patent or if the injunction is vacated as to the '574 or '711 patent, Vonage will pay Verizon $80 million. If Vonage does not win rehearing on either the '574 or '711 patent, or if the stay is lifted reinstating the injunction, Vonage will pay Verizon $117.5 million.

The parties are pleased to have resolved this matter.

Bloggers take on Verizon Wireless’ impending disclosure of subscriber call information (CPNI)

After opposing Open Wireless Spectrum and taking FCC to court, Now Verizon wants to open up all your call information to third parties. It does not seem like only Verizon customers are affected. Callers from other networks will be let loose if Verizon's customers do not act on a leaflet that comes with monthly bill. Since this is a change to contract, they never told you about CPNI disclosure, (INAL, check with your lawyer) you might be able to cease any contracts that customers has with Verizon and go to another provider.
Network Observations has sent an email to FCC Commissioners and also provide a template for you to use to send your own email to FCC;
"Email Subject: Verizon Wireless CPNI Disclosure

Dear Chairman Martin, and esteemed FCC Commissioners,

I am writing to express my strong concern that Verizon Wireless is able to subvert the will of the people and established Federal law by simply including a leaflet in my monthly bill advising me that if I do not Opt-Out of CPNI disclosure within 30-days receipt of the notice, I will be Opted-In automatically and with no further notice. Verizon will no doubt snare hundreds of thousands of subscribers who are simply too busy, or fail to recognize the importance of the CPNI announcement."

Fellow Blogger Ken Camp has also taken up the task.

Nokia E51 Introduced at CTIA San Francisco

Nokia has introduced its E51 business phone at CTIA 2007, Providing key business applications such as email, contacts, and calendar. Then in addition to expected features like WiFi connectivity, HSDPA support, quad-band GSM, one-touch keys, an integrated FM radio, audio and video players, and a 2 megapixel camera into a strong steel handset that measures a mere 12mm thin.

I was impressed with the range of applications, and the features it offered. The E51 is expected to priced around $500.00. May be a good contender for iPhone. Information is available at European Nokia site.

NoiseFree VoIP will clear Up your Calls

NoiseFree VoIP has just launched a fresh all-software solution to those often noisy VoIP calls. Skype, Yahoo Messenger with Voice, and Google Talk are great ways to save money on long distance, but if you're calling anywhere near civilization, you're bound to get interference. A noisy line can undo the advantage of free Internet calls.

Until December 31, 2007, NoiseFree VoIP is offering a free beta of its noise-canceling software to registered users. The Repoter tested it at CTIA and was impressed with the demo. There was noticeable improvement in call quality when I toggled the software on and off, though the background buzz in the busy room didn't and couldn't have faded completely.

“Our software easily installs and when used at both ends of a call completely removes the challenges presented by uncontrollable environmental noise. Additionally, NoiseFree VoIP is able to reduce the packet load on a network, mitigating instances of voice distortion due to impacted network nodes. By doing so it enhances overall bandwidth availability.”

Unlike traditional commercial noise cancellation solutions (including those used in applications such as audio conferencing, stereo and hi-fidelity sound reinforcement and avionics), Noise Free products provide, receive and transmit noise cancellation and require no additional hardware devices, DSP chips, or other costly additions to support laptop or VoIP handset usage.

NoiseFree VoIP Features:

  • Patent pending noise cancellation technology that detects and suppresses background noise to enhance user speech clarity
  • Low power consumption
  • Very low memory requirement
  • Advanced Voice Activity Detection
  • Fast Echo Cancellation
  • User-friendly installation
  • Readily available through download

NoiseFree VoIP supports a wide variety of VoIP Software and Services including: Skype™, Yahoo Messenger™, Google Talk™ and soft phones. It has been tested and is compatible with Windows™ XP and Vista.

You also can check out some demos here.

And if you want you can download it here.

Apple opens iPhone Dev Center

Even before we could take a breath after talking about iPhone SDK, Apple Developer center has added a new section. It is called iPhone Dev Center and I could login with my ADC membership.
There is nothing much there right now but I think once the iPhone SDK is comes out in February, the site might get busy.
Right now, Development guide lines, Techtalk (Videos) and sample code for web apps are there but I find the iPhone reference Library to be the best for the moment.
Visit the site and get a free online ADC membership, and enjoy another phase of the iphone legacy!
