Jabra GN9350, Brings Wireless VoIP To Your Ear, Literally.

The Hardware Zone has reviewed the new Jabra GN9350, a dual function wireless headset which combines both landline and VoIP in a single package with very good wireless range.
The GN9350 main features include the ability to be linked to a PC for VoIP connections while also connected to the landline for your normal phone calls. Switching between the PC audio and the telephone line is as simple as pressing a button on the base station or the headset (though the headset only allows you to switch to the telephone line and not back).

Transitions between the telephone line and PC audio were smooth with only a slight pause between switches. The Jabra headset also provides connectivity for Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunication (DECT) phones which must be paired to the base station. Another function that is advertised but which we were unable to test since we were only provided with one headset, is the conference call function. The GN9350 allows up to 4 headsets to be set up in conference mode for conference calls. The GN9350 also boasts of a wireless range of up to 300ft (91.4m). Walls may restrict the signal somewhat but testing done around the office gave a decent range from which to roam about.

After writing about RTX DualPhone 3081, a phone to make VoIP calls(including Skype) without a computer, I learned that that there is another phone that could make skype calls to anywhere without a computer. It is a phone by IPEVO.
IPEVO has made a few other VoIP phones. Free.1, Free.2, Trio and Xing and all these were USB phones and were to be used with a computer attached! Now the company has released SOLO, which is pictured above and as the name suggests, operates stand alone as long as there is a Internet connection. According to the company, Setting up is as easy as plugging in the network cable, log in to your Skype account, and just pick up to make a call!.
Yes it is a desktop phone. But given the track record of the company, I think we will see a SOLO.2 or SOLO WiFi, a wireless SOLO soon! I have a feeling there is Linux somewhere and I really would like to get my hand on one soon. In any case it is a
The Phone features are very impressive and again according to IPEVO;

Centillium Takes on Multi-Service Access Market, with Entropia III-C, a VoIP System On a Chip.

Centillium Communications (NASDAQ: CTLM) Yesterday released Entropia™ III-C, the newest member of its suite of system-on-chip (SoC) Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) solutions. Aimed at fast-growing multi-service access network (MSAN) applications such as POTS replacement, Entropia III-C scales the market proven features and performance advantages of the company’s flagship system into a smaller-sized, highly integrated chipset with cost structures and channel densities that squarely target the requirements of business communications and subscriber loop infrastructures.

“Our newest chipset marks a significant expansion of our reach in the booming market for voice services over the IP backbone,” said Didier Boivin, vice president of marketing, Centillium. “By extending technologies proven out in demanding, high-volume central office environments, we’ve scaled an innovative, best-in-class platform to bring superior performance, power consumption and service quality to new network access applications as well as legacy telco facilities.”

True Channel Density

Further distancing Entropia III-C from other solutions, the SoC reliably delivers 72 LBR channels of voice independent of the codecs in use. While other solutions achieve up to 72 channels with bandwidth-friendly compressed codecs, their capacity degrades to levels as low as 30 channels per card when bandwidth-intensive uncompressed codecs are processed. In contrast, Entropia III-C offers available support for all wireline and wireless codecs while assuring carriers of the maximum 72-channel capacity regardless of the mix of codecs in routing. As a result, Entropia III-C economizes on costs and physical space requirements by supporting fewer linecards to manage comparable voice traffic.

"Our upcoming annual VoIP market report will forecast steady growth in 'low-density' aggregation media gateways, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 62 percent through 2011," said Steve Rago, principal analyst, iSuppli. "This is the market opportunity that versatile, low-density processors like Centillium's latest Entropia offering seek to capitalize."
The Entropia III-C SoC is available now and includes software, documentation and reference designs for minimized time-to-market. Entropia solutions power voice and media gateways, wireless infrastructure gateways, Class 4 and 5 switches, DLC, voice-enabled IP routers, and IP-PBX systems. Entropia software fully supports IMS architecture, enabling on-demand delivery of rich media services over wireless and wireline networks. Get VoIP with a cordless phone from Sunrocket

VoIP IP Telephony @ http://snapvoip.blogspot.com

GigaOm's Paul Kapustka reports and asks the question; "Will a low-cost cordless phone finally convince you to pull the plug on the PSTN?"
and answers the same with ample data;
"That’s what SunRocket and ATS hope with their scheduled announcement Tuesday of a cordless, multi-handset VoIP phone that will be available for as little as $19.99 after a rebate."

But I found this graph of VoIP provider client distribution by telegeography interesting.

POTS/VoIP Line Card for Multi Service Access Platform, from ZyXel

From ZyXel News
VoIP IP Telephony Snapvoip.bogspot.com
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla.February 6, 2007
Efficiency and cost savings are two of the main drivers for the transition to VoIP. As service providers are evaluating the timing and benefits of such a move, ZyXEL Communications today at the NTCA Expo 2007, announced the VOP1248G, a POTS/VoIP line card. Designed to ease the transition to VoIP networks, the new card features a media gateway that converts analog voice to VoIP, thus eliminating the need to install special VoIP phones or an analog telephone adapter (ATA) on customer premises. Now, service providers can offer their customers next generation voice services while saving on costs.

ZyXEL’s new POTS/VoIP line card works in conjunction with ZyXEL’s IES 5000 and IES 5005 chassis-based Multiple Service Access Platforms (MSAP) and is targeted to telcos looking for an easier way to offer the benefits of a VoIP architecture to its customers. The VOP1248G is a 48-port module card that enables wireline carriers to provide lifeline telephone service to their residential and business subscribers. ZyXEL’s IES 5000 and IES 5005 MSAPs provide support for ADSL 2+, G.SHDSL.BIS and even VDSL 2 line cards, and are ideal for telcos who would like to offer multiple services over the same box.

“ZyXEL is the fourth largest IP DSLAM vendor in the world,” said Munira Brooks, senior vice president of sales, marketing and business development. "This VoIP line card solution allows service providers to offer feature rich telephone services to their customers and do it economically by smoothly transitioning to an IP based network.”

The new POTS/VoIP line card supports all network signaling protocols, digital signal processing and an IP packetization mechanism based on open standards that include SIP and H.248/Megaco for broad range interoperability with leading softswitch manufacturers. Additionally, the up-to-date QoS function guarantees the service quality of voice packets. The VOP1248G works in conjunction with ZyXEL’s IP MSAP’s, the IES-5000 and 5005, and co-exists with any broadband DSL line card in the main chassis. The IES-5000 and 5005 support strong IP QoS functions based on IEEE802.1q to guarantee and prioritize different types of traffic including voice, data or IPTV.

Voice Services Supported by the VOP1248G include:
