NEW YORK (Reuters) - Google Inc has invested hundreds of millions of dollars in its cell phone project and is courting U.S. and European mobile operators, The Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday.

Anian, a Reuters company that tracks industry trends for institutional investors, reported last month that Google had engaged Taiwan's High Tech Computer Corp to design a Linux software-based phone for launch in the first quarter of 2008.

The Anian report cited industry sources as saying T-Mobile, owned by Deutsche Telekom , would likely be Google's U.S. partner with France Telecom's Orange selling the phones in other markets.

The Journal said on Thursday Google had also approached the two biggest U.S. wireless services, AT&T Inc and Verizon Wireless, in recent months to ask them to sell phones with Google service.

It cited a Verizon Wireless executive saying the company had decided not to integrate Google's Web search tightly into its phones because of Google's advertising revenue-sharing demands. The newspaper said the executive had not commented on a Google phone.

hhmm.... that display looks exactly like that of Windows Mobile 5. Except that this is green and Windows Mobile is blue by default.

But targ8.com is easier to type on a gspot google phone, so we'll all use this search engine instead. Dont google it, targ8 it.

from what i understand this is just a concept which is why the picture looks like windows mobile?

that picture is obviously a 3D render.
they probably just put a photo on the screen , well it looks like that

Will it blend?

thats not a windows logo, if you look closely you can you its 3 dots not a flag

Obviously they don't have a working model yet. Someone simply took a screenshot of a different smartphone, and photoshopped it on to the gphone.

And yes, it's a Windows logo . . . if you look closely, you can see that it says "Start" next to it.

Ignore the start button which is hard to see. Instead look at the status icons, clearly from Windows Mobile 5, as a previous poster suggested.

I don't see why Google would need to run Windows on such a device. They've got plenty of competent Linux hackers to design a simple phone, not to mention their ability to use other existing handheld implementations.

I would think they would have to stay away from Windows due to the cost of licensing and added hardware costs, given that the story says they'll be giving them away dirt cheap. Their profits take a serious hit if they need to buy expensive hardware and pay Microsoft for installing Windows Mobile.

The picture looks too much like something Apple would build (iPod). It's also missing any data connectors for recharging, synching and connecting headphones. And I don't think they'd bother making only be a browsing device. My guess is "lazy photoshop artist".
