Following Notepad++ To Heavens Via Scientology

Fri 04/01/2011 http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
I use notepad++ for everything for such a long time that it has become a part of my desktop. Like a browser, it is constantly on my desktop, helping me with writing code snippets for a SQL query to full pledged code projects.
Today, Don Ho said that he has joined Scientology and after reading his article I am following him, if my donations are going there why not me!

Sprint Drops Froyo Powered Samsung Galaxy Tab To $199!

Samsung Galaxy Tab $199! http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
Looks like the tablet wars are sprinting in to action, beginning with Sprint and Samsung Galaxy Tab.  Sprint's is taking away full $100 from the current contract price of $299.99 for its Samsung Galaxy Tab starting on Sunday. So from this Sunday, Galaxy Tab will be the most affordable Android powered (Froyo) 3G-enabled tablet in the market.
That is if you sign the 2 year commitment to Sprint. If you are the type who does not like the commitments, you can pickup the tablet for $429.00
Now to wait for those Galaxy Tab 10" tablets to drop their prices.

Check Stock Ticker On the Go On Your Mobile With Google.

We all look at stock symbols one way or another. But more so people who have invested or dealing with investments. For me all those stock information are checked on large desktop screens! Because it was near impossible to see all those cryptic data on a tiny screen.
But now Google search is taking a new approach to the idea of presenting stock information on small screens.
As you can see from the images above, when you visit Google.com on your iPhone or Android powered device and search for a sticker symbol, you will see a all encompassing graph or a card and you can navigate the information using the buttons at the bottom.
Swipe on the card from right to left, you get the latest financial news about the company. Once more will get you market overview and one more will show you the summery of your portfolio.
Currently the feature is available in English with other languages coming soon, give it a try.

Google Makes Kansas City Happy With Ultra high-speed Broadband, Gigabit Fiber To Home.

Even though many communities across USA are looking at Kansas city, Kansas with envy, I am happy that Google has broken grounds on the project. Even if Google is selective (1100 communities wanted Google Fiber to Home) in it's High speed networks and where they are laid out, other providers can not ignore the fact that fiber to home is the way to go. Google and it's Gigabit Fiber network will be the catalyst for other providers to come out, at least with megabit networks.
It is more than just a faster network and an example of what high speed network and applications could do to a community. What ever the selection criteria, Google has chosen Kansas city and is working with with local organizations including the Kauffman Foundation, KCNext and the University of Kansas Medical Center to help develop the Gigabit applications of the future.

Congratulations Kansas City!

Smartphone Patent Lawsuit Targets Developers In Addition To Apple, Android, Blackberry and Microsoft

Smartphone Patents, http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
I come back from a small spring break to find a bunch of smatphone related lawsuits. iPhone, Blackberry, Android and Microsoft are all targeted in these suits. Google / Android alone seem to have attracted 38 such lawsuits.
But the latest lawsuit targeting 32 entities is covering developers in addition to hardware and Smartphone OS manufacturers like Google and Apple. Texas-based H-W Technology L.C. filed a complaint in Eastern Texas March 30, 2011, asserting a Patent on an "Internet protocol (IP) phone with search and advertising capability" against 32 legal entities. H-W Technology L.C. claims that the patent covers systems and methods that "allow users of [smartphones] via domain specific applications to receive information and offers from merchants and to complete a transaction with one of said merchants without having to generate a voice call.", which sounds to me like web browsing me who knows next to nothing about law and patents!

This is setting a pathway for patent hoarders as well as real patent holders to go after app developers. USPTO should really be checking these stuff well. At least we can be happy that Florian Mueller is doing the hard work of sorting things out for us.
He has drawn out the main pieces of the complaint (which is supposed to be very large);

  • Google and Microsoft are sued for providing software that is installed on smartphones. With respect to Microsoft, the Windows Phone 7-powered Samsung Focus is mentioned. In Google's case, the Android application store is mentioned.
  • Device makers: specifically named products include the iPhone, the BlackBerry Torch, and five Android devices (LG G2x, Samsung Galaxy S, Motorola Droid X, HTC Thunderbolt, and Kyocera Echo).
  • All of the accused apps are basically mobile online shops: Amazon.com's, eBay's, Hotels.com's, Expedia's, Priceline.com's, Orbitz Worldwide's and Kayak.com's apps, and Verizon's VCast app.

Verizon Overcharges 133000 Customers With A Phantom $7 LateFee In Florida, Texas and California

Verizon Overcharges 133000 Customers http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
Verizon customers in Florida, Texas and California, 133000 of them, were over billed by the company because of an operator error.
An operator or someone of of same capability from North Carolina billing center programmed the computers with wrong instructions to bill customers with a phantom late fee of $7 or 1.5 percent of most users' bills (whichever was greater). This brought in closer to a million dollars from state of Florida alone.

Someone in a Durham, N.C., billing center entered the wrong instructions into a computer that generated the bills for customers in Florida, California and Texas, said Bob Elek, a Verizon spokesman. Verizon says customers should get a credit for the fee on one of their next two bills.
Last October Verizon agreed to pay closer to $90 million in refunds for unauthorized $1.99 data charge billed to customers.
It pays to check your bills regularly.

Color Buys Color.com ($350,000) and Colour.com (?) For Sharing your Photos Publicly.

Color goes Green from the start! http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
Looks alike early adopters, adopters and venture capitalists are going crazy over color (coulour, I will get to that in abit), a new location based photo, video sharing service that started yesterday.
Color uses mobile apps in iPhone and Android (so far) to snap and share photos in a particular location, automatically with others. The others is decided by color, not you. So make sure you do not send up private photos.

Color in itself is a very simple to use as is the idea. There is no setup, you download the app and run it, enter your name, take a photo of yourself (or your dog) and you are good to go.
Your photos sent via color get associated with other users based on your location activity etc. Like if you are at a concert, and if many people start sending photos from the concert, color will create a group album from the photos everyone send in from that event. Color can dig a little deep in to information by taking into account the content of your pictures, the orientation of your device in relation to other devices using the service and similar signals.

The surprise is in the funding, they got $41 Million even before they set foot in the public. Color also spent closer to $500,000 securing the color.com and colour.com, more than many startups dream of earning in their life time. Color them up clour, please make mine green.

Keep Your PBX in a Flash ( PIAF ) Running During An Internet Outage!

PBX in a Flash ( PIAF ) Can Run without Internet http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
If you experienced PIAF server was not able to route any calls after losing your Internet connection, even between local extensions Ward Mundy just Tweeted how we could avoid this.
The solution is to run a Bind DNS Caching Server running on your PIAF box to keep it going with an Internet outage. If you decided to use this solution, and if you are using FDQNs on your phones, the primary DNS server address must internal or external IP address of your server, where your phones are attached.
Ward Mundy, on the PIAF forum, has provided a simple script to run on your server and a set of files to get everything setup properly like ROOT server information and forwarding DNS queries to Google DNS servers.. The script is not shell script so you will have to run each line by themselves. (You can convert it into a shell script, if you have many PIAF servers running.)
After logging into your server with root capability (root or a sudo account) run the following code at the end of the article. Once you run the code and satisfied that everything is fine, run a dig command (e.g. dig inbound1.vitelity.net) for each of the FQDNs of your SIP trunk providers! This will cache the DNS information on your server to be used when the need arises. You can find the info with FreePBX: Tools, Asterisk Info, SIP Info, SIP Registry. Happy calling;

yum -y install bind*

cd /var/named
service named stop
wget http://pbxinaflash.net/source/bind/bind.tgz
tar zxvf bind.tgz
rm bind.tgz

echo nameserver 127.0.0.1 > /etc/resolv.conf

sed -i 's|$nameserver|127.0.0.1|' /sbin/dhclient-script

service named start
service network restart

dig pbxinaflash.com
dig pbxinaflash.com

# look at the output for the second dig command issued above
# 2d dig command should show a very short DNS lookup time, e.g.
#;; Query time: 1 msec
#;; SERVER: 127.0.0.1#53(127.0.0.1)
# IF ALL IS WELL...

#be sure to set named for auto start on bootup

chkconfig  named  on --level 2345
chkconfig --list named

# named should be configured to start with RunLevels 2,3,4,5

Switching To Gmail As Easy As Walking Away!

http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
We all know the benefits of using GMail (We have switched to GMail and other Google services like Google Docs for our work at DiorDna Group now.) and switching from other email providers are becoming much easier.
Almost two years ago, GMail told us how to switch from other providers like AOL or Hotmail. With all the services GMail providing now like easy and free calling and receiving calls from Google Voice it is really beneficial to switch over to GMail.
But the GMail team has thought about all the contacts and mail you have accumulated over the years in your previous accounts. So the team continue to add new email providers to the list you can import contacts and email from. There are 14 new providers in the list of supported email providers:
  • aol.com.br
  • hotmail.es
  • hotmail.it
  • hotmail.co.jp
  • Kimo.com
  • live.jp
  • yahoo.es
  • yahoo.cn
  • yahoo.com.cn
  • yahoo.com.hk
  • yahoo.com.sg
  • yahoo.com.tw
  • yahoo.co.jp
  • yahoo.it
To make the process even easier GMail team created a site, gmail.com/switch, explaining why and how to switch to GMail. If you have any feedback, please provide them at GMail Support forum.

A Sprint In Your Google Voice, Or Vise Versa.

A Sprint In Your Google Voice, Or Vise Versa. http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/

Yesterday we wrote about Google Nexus S 4G on Sprint with integrated Google Voice. I was so excited about the Nexus S 4G, I almost did not pay attention to the Google Voice part of it. By reading a Post on Googleblog (Cross-posted from the Google Voice Blog) explains to process in bit more depth.
Google Voice has come a long way since the Grand Central days, where I got my feet wet with what is now Google Voice.
Google Voice already comes in as mobile versions and you can use it with your existing numbers or as of lately, you can even port your mobile number to the Google Voice. By doing so means one can make the mobile number you’ve always used your Google Voice number, so it can ring any phone or computer you want.

So obviously the next step is to work with Carriers to integrate Google Voice with mobile phones. If you remember the AT&T / iPhone / Google Voice fiasco, you will understand how short sighted some carriers are. They even went as far as complaining to FCC about how bad Google Voice for not connecting to spam numbers! But then again, there are others who see the light early on, like Sprint.

Sprint customers will be the first in line to be able to do so. So now Sprint customers who uses Google Voice, will be able to use their mobile number as their Google Voice number.
This means a lot to Sprint customers as they can have all the benefits of Google Voice without having to port or change their numbers.
Additionally if so desired, Google Voice users can replace Sprint number with Google Voice number when making calls or sending TEXT messages from their Sprint phone.

In both the above cases, Google Voice will assume the tasks of Sprint Voicemail allowing Sprint customers to receive transcribed voicemail as email or TEXT messages. Another benefit is the International calls at low rates. International calls made from Google Voice users’ Sprint phones will be connected by Google Voice at Google's very low rates.
Also all other feature of Google Voice, like call recording, blocking unwanted calls, and personalized voicemail greetings based on the callers number, will be available to users.
These benefits will be avilable to Sprint users in the USA and will gradually be availble to all Google Voice users. Check your Google Voice account.

Design Behind Android Renderscript .. Renderscript Part 2

Android Renderscript Continued.. http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
If you were interested in the earlier article about the native Android Renderscript API, introduced to us by Google engineer, Jason Sams, you will be delighted to know that Jason has followed up with even better part two of the subject loaded with theories and examples.
The new article focuses on how the Renderscript was designed, Portability, Performance and Usability were the main objectives. Jason explains why C99 was selected as the base for the Renderscript and how 'compute' offloading of data processing from Dalvik code to Renderscript code.
I have not tried the examples yet but I will do as soon as I find some time, just to understand the graphics processing with Renderscript.

Microsoft Sues Barnes & Noble, Foxconn and Inventec for Patent Infringement by Android Devices

Microsoft Sues Barnes & Noble, Foxconn and Inventec http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
Microsoft filed a complaint with the US District Court for the District of Western Washington,  and one with the US International Trade Commission (ITC). Microsoft earlier lodged complaints against Motorola with the same organization and asserted the same patents in both of them.

“The Android platform infringes a number of Microsoft’s patents, and companies manufacturing and shipping Android devices must respect our intellectual property rights. To facilitate that we have established an industry-wide patent licensing program for Android device manufacturers, HTC, a market leader in Android smartphones, has taken a license under this program. We have tried for over a year to reach licensing agreements with Barnes & Noble, Foxconn and Inventec. Their refusals to take licenses leave us no choice but to bring legal action to defend our innovations and fulfill our responsibility to our customers, partners, and shareholders to safeguard the billions of dollars we invest each year to bring great software products and services to market,”  said Horacio Gutierrez, Corporate Vice President and Deputy General Counsel for Intellectual Property & Licensing.

iPhone5 Rumors Keep Adding, NFC, A5 Processor And So On

iPhone 5 http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
I guess untill Apple comes out with a definitive answer regarding the iPhone 5, there will be more rumors. The latest comes fro China Times and according to them the device is in production state and has an improved antenna and a metal case or chassis and will be ready to launch in third quarter of 2011.
There is also information about NFC (Near Field Communication) chip to be coupled with an e-wallet service allowing users to leave their wallets behind. Like in Japan where most of the monitory transactions like buying a railway or bus ticket, a cup of coffee or many other stuff offered in vending machines are done with ones phone. The Google Nexus S and Google Nexus S 4G already has the NFC chips embedded so it is only natural that iPhone keeps up! :)
In addition to the antenna correction (remember the antennagate) the iPhone 5 screen will also have more real estate with an 4" screen instead of 3.5 inch that they have now.
Next improvement comes from the processor and will have tha same processor as the iPad 2, a dual core A5 processor.
The China Times als speaks of an Apple manufacturing plant in Brazil, dedicated to producing Apple product which plans to begin production in 2013.

Cool New 2011 Apple MACbook Pros Having Graphics Heat Issues!

Cool New 2011 Apple MACbook Pro Problems http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
Looks like the new Macbook pro notebooks are having some cooling issues under heavy loads.I was a bit disappointed because I was planing to get the new 17" version for myself.
Since my interest, I have been watching the forums to learn about the new Macbooks and these issues reported points to Mac OS X and graphics chip cooling. People who has loaded Windows says the machines stay stable under the same conditions.
Apple has indicated to users who notified the issue that a team of engineers are working on the issue. Many people who has returned the machines because of the problem experienced the same with the new machines.
I guess I will wait for my 1920x1200 screen!

Twitter Tax Break, A San Francisco Political Fight!

Twitter Tax Break, http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/

The Twitter Tax break would give companies in the economically depressed Mid-Market and Tenderloin neighborhoods, be exempt from paying the payroll tax for new employees. The exemption would be good for six years and would not apply to workers already on the payroll.
The legislation also exempt affected companies from paying payroll taxes on employee stock options if they go public during this six years and would save a bundle for involved companies.

But the board of supervisors are up in arms. Some supports the measure while others looking to bring it in front of voters in November.

Twitter, a private company, is thinking of moving to Brisbane from it's current location, south of market, is of course looking for the break. If approved, Twitter would move in to a place on Market street by ninth street. Twitter is projecting to hire about 2650 employees by 2013. Twitter currently has 350 employees.

T-Mobile Ads, Now We Are Crappy Too, Just Like AT&T!

http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
Remember those T-Mobile Ads, depicting AT&T and Other networks are being crappy? Well I guess now they will have to say, following the trend we have decided to become crappy too! Too bad T-Mobile was one carrier I was considering to replace my AT&T Unlimited plan, which has apparently will become limited if you are tethering your smartphone.

You Tether, You Pay! AT&T To Tethering Smartphone Users. MyWi Is Not YourWi!

You Tether, You Pay http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
Looks like AT&T wants smartphone users to pay up for tethering. Tethering came to AT&T network with iOS 4.3 and has a specials data plan for such users. But many users have used third party apps like MyWi.
If you thought you are exempt because you are on the grandfathered unlimited plan, you are wrong;

If we don’t hear from you, we’ll plan to automatically enroll you into DataPro 4GB after March 27, 2011. The new plan – whether you sign up on your own or we automatically enroll you – will replace your current smartphone data plan, including if you are on an unlimited data plan.
So if you have been tethering and received the fallowing letter, stop it and contact AT&T before March 27 and save your unlimited plan.
Others, change the plan or change the carriers, skip T-Mobile as AT&T is to acquire T-Mobile soon.

The purported letter from AT&T (fished from the net, we did not get such letter);
Dear [Name of Account Holder],

We’ve noticed your service plan may need updating.

Many AT&T customers use their smartphones as a broadband connection for other devices, like laptops, netbooks or other smartphones– a practice commonly known as tethering. Tethering can be an efficient way for our customers to enjoy the benefits of AT&T’s mobile broadband network and use more than one device to stay in touch with important people and information. To take advantage of this feature, we require that in addition to a data plan, you also have a tethering plan.
Our records show that you use this capability, but are not subscribed to our tethering plan.

If you would like to continue tethering, please log into your account online at www.wireless.att.com, or call us at 1-888-860-6789 Monday – Friday, 7 a.m. – 9 p.m. CST or Saturday, 8 a.m. – 7 p.m. CST, by March 27, 2011 to sign up for DataPro 4GB for Smartphone Tethering. Here are details on the plan:

DataPro 4GB for Smartphone Tethering
• $45 per month (this gives you 4GB in total, combining both your smartphone data plan for $25 and the tethering feature, $20)
• $10 per each additional GB thereafter, added automatically as needed
• Mobile Hotspot capabilities are included for compatible Smartphones

If we don’t hear from you, we’ll plan to automatically enroll you into DataPro 4GB after March 27, 2011. The new plan – whether you sign up on your own or we automatically enroll you – will replace your current smartphone data plan, including if you are on an unlimited data plan.

If you discontinue tethering, no changes to your current plan will be required.

It’s easy to track your usage throughout the month so there are no bill surprises. For example, we send you free text messages when you reach 65, 90, and 100 percent of your plan’s threshold. If you would like to monitor your account more closely, go to www.att.com/dataplans to learn about other ways to track your data usage.

As a reminder, our smartphone data plans also include unlimited usage of Wi-Fi at no additional charge. AT&T smartphone customers can use Wi-Fi at home or on-the-go at any one of our more than 23,000 U.S. hotspots already included in your data plan.

Thank you for bringing your account up to date. We appreciate the opportunity to continue to serve your mobile broadband needs.

Sincerely,

AT&T

Please update your data plan by March 27, 2011 if you intend to continue tethering

$39 Billion AT&T, T-Mobile Deal, iPhone Gets Fastest Network And T-Mobile Users Get iPhones!

$39 Billion AT&T, T-Mobile Deal http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
With the following press release, AT&T is on the way to acquire T-Mobile USA and many including deal makers stand to gain.
AT&T and T_mobile share the same type of networks like GSM. UMTS/HSPA and the integration on two companies will technologically seem to be sound.

“This transaction represents a major commitment to strengthen and expand critical infrastructure for our nation’s future,” said Randall Stephenson, AT&T Chairman and CEO. “It will improve network quality, and it will bring advanced LTE capabilities to more than 294 million people. Mobile broadband networks drive economic opportunity everywhere, and they enable the expanding high-tech ecosystem that includes device makers, cloud and content providers, app developers, customers, and more. During the past few years, America’s high-tech industry has delivered innovation at unprecedented speed, and this combination will accelerate its continued growth.”
The buyout will also make AT&T the largest wireless carrier with somewhere close to 130 million users and T-Mobile customers 33.7 million of them now can have iPhones if they really want, just like T-Mobile European customers.

DALLAS & BONN, Germany--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T - News) and Deutsche Telekom AG (FWB:DTE.f - News) today announced that they have entered into a definitive agreement under which AT&T will acquire T-Mobile USA from Deutsche Telekom in a cash-and-stock transaction currently valued at approximately $39 billion. The agreement has been approved by the Boards of Directors of both companies.
AT&T’s acquisition of T-Mobile USA provides an optimal combination of network assets to add capacity sooner than any alternative, and it provides an opportunity to improve network quality in the near term for both companies’ customers. In addition, it provides a fast, efficient and certain solution to the impending exhaustion of wireless spectrum in some markets, which limits both companies’ ability to meet the ongoing explosive demand for mobile broadband.
With this transaction, AT&T commits to a significant expansion of robust 4G LTE (Long Term Evolution) deployment to 95 percent of the U.S. population to reach an additional 46.5 million Americans beyond current plans – including rural communities and small towns. This helps achieve the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and President Obama’s goals to connect “every part of America to the digital age.” T-Mobile USA does not have a clear path to delivering LTE.
Stephenson continued, “This transaction delivers significant customer, shareowner and public benefits that are available at this level only from the combination of these two companies with complementary network technologies, spectrum positions and operations. We are confident in our ability to execute a seamless integration, and with additional spectrum and network capabilities, we can better meet our customers’ current demands, build for the future and help achieve the President’s goals for a high-speed, wirelessly connected America.”
Deutsche Telekom Chairman and CEO René Obermann said, “After evaluating strategic options for T-Mobile USA, I am confident that AT&T is the best partner for our customers, shareholders and the mobile broadband ecosystem. Our common network technology makes this a logical combination and provides an efficient path to gaining the spectrum and network assets needed to provide T-Mobile customers with 4G LTE and the best devices. Also, the transaction returns significant value to Deutsche Telekom shareholders and allows us to retain exposure to the U.S. market.”
As part of the transaction, Deutsche Telekom will receive an equity stake in AT&T that, based on the terms of the agreement, would give Deutsche Telekom an ownership interest in AT&T of approximately 8 percent. A Deutsche Telekom representative will join the AT&T Board of Directors.
Competition and Pricing
The U.S. wireless industry is one of the most fiercely competitive markets in the world and will remain so after this deal. The U.S. is one of the few countries in the world where a large majority of consumers can choose from five or more wireless providers in their local market. For example, in 18 of the top 20 U.S. local markets, there are five or more providers. Local market competition is escalating among larger carriers, low-cost carriers and several regional wireless players with nationwide service plans. This intense competition is only increasing with the build-out of new 4G networks and the emergence of new market entrants.
The competitiveness of the market has directly benefited consumers. A 2010 report from the U.S. General Accounting Office (GAO) states the overall average price (adjusted for inflation) for wireless services declined 50 percent from 1999 to 2009, during a period which saw five major wireless mergers.
Addresses wireless spectrum challenges facing AT&T, T-Mobile USA, their customers, and U.S. policymakers
This transaction quickly provides the spectrum and network efficiencies necessary for AT&T to address impending spectrum exhaust in key markets driven by the exponential growth in mobile broadband traffic on its network. AT&T’s mobile data traffic grew 8,000 percent over the past four years and by 2015 it is expected to be eight to 10 times what it was in 2010. Put another way, all of the mobile traffic volume AT&T carried during 2010 is estimated to be carried in just the first six to seven weeks of 2015. Because AT&T has led the U.S. in smartphones, tablets and e-readers – and as a result, mobile broadband – it requires additional spectrum before new spectrum will become available. In the long term, the entire industry will need additional spectrum to address the explosive growth in demand for mobile broadband.
Improves service quality for U.S. wireless customers
AT&T and T-Mobile USA customers will see service improvements - including improved voice quality - as a result of additional spectrum, increased cell tower density and broader network infrastructure. At closing, AT&T will immediately gain cell sites equivalent to what would have taken on average five years to build without the transaction, and double that in some markets. The combination will increase AT&T’s network density by approximately 30 percent in some of its most populated areas, while avoiding the need to construct additional cell towers. This transaction will increase spectrum efficiency to increase capacity and output, which not only improves service, but is also the best way to ensure competitive prices and services in a market where demand is extremely high and spectrum is in short supply.
Expands 4G LTE deployment to 95 percent of U.S. population – urban and rural areas
This transaction will directly benefit an additional 46.5 million Americans – equivalent to the combined populations of the states of New York and Texas – who will, as a result of this combination, have access to AT&T’s latest 4G LTE technology. In terms of area covered, the transaction enables 4G LTE deployment to an additional 1.2 million square miles, equivalent to 4.5 times the size of the state of Texas. Rural and smaller communities will substantially benefit from the expansion of 4G LTE deployment, increasing the competitiveness of the businesses and entrepreneurs in these areas.
Increases AT&T’s investment in the U.S.
The acquisition will increase AT&T’s infrastructure investment in the U.S. by more than $8 billion over seven years. Expansion of AT&T’s 4G LTE network is an important foundation for the next wave of innovation and growth in mobile broadband, ensuring the U.S. continues to lead the world in wireless technology and availability. It makes T-Mobile USA, currently a German-owned U.S. telecom network, part of a U.S.-based company.
An impressive, combined workforce
Bringing AT&T and T-Mobile USA together will create an impressive workforce that is best positioned to compete in today’s global economy. Post-closing, AT&T intends to tap into the significant knowledge and expertise held by employees of both AT&T and T-Mobile USA to succeed. AT&T is the only major U.S. wireless company with a union workforce, offering leading wages, benefits, training and development for employees. The combined company will continue to have a strong employee and operations base in the Seattle area.
Consistent with AT&T’s track record of value-enhancing acquisitions
AT&T has a strong track record of executing value-enhancing acquisitions and expects to create substantial value for shareholders through large, straightforward synergies with a run rate of more than $3 billion, three years after closing onward (excluding integration costs). The value of the synergies is expected to exceed the purchase price of $39 billion. Revenue synergies come from opportunities to increase smartphone penetration and data average revenue per user, with cost savings coming from network efficiencies, subscriber and support savings, reduced churn and avoided capital and spectrum expenditures.
The transaction will enhance margin potential and improve the company’s long-term revenue growth potential as it benefits from a more robust mobile broadband platform for new services.
Additional financial information
The $39 billion purchase price will include a cash payment of $25 billion with the balance to be paid using AT&T common stock, subject to adjustment. AT&T has the right to increase the cash portion of the purchase price by up to $4.2 billion with a corresponding reduction in the stock component, so long as Deutsche Telekom receives at least a 5 percent equity ownership interest in AT&T.
The number of AT&T shares issued will be based on the AT&T share price during the 30-day period prior to closing, subject to a 7.5 percent collar; there is a one-year lock-up period during which Deutsche Telekom cannot sell shares.
The cash portion of the purchase price will be financed with new debt and cash on AT&T’s balance sheet. AT&T has an 18-month commitment for a one-year unsecured bridge term facility underwritten by J.P. Morgan for $20 billion. AT&T assumes no debt from T-Mobile USA or Deutsche Telekom and continues to have a strong balance sheet.
The transaction is expected to be earnings (excluding non-cash amortization and integration costs) accretive in the third year after closing. Pro-forma for 2010, this transaction increases AT&T’s total wireless revenues from $58.5 billion to nearly $80 billion, and increases the percentage of AT&T’s total revenues from wireless, wireline data and managed services to approximately 80 percent.
This transaction will allow for sufficient cash flow to support AT&T’s dividend. AT&T has increased its dividend for 27 consecutive years, a matter decided by AT&T’s Board of Directors.
Conditions
The acquisition is subject to regulatory approvals, a reverse breakup fee in certain circumstances, and other customary regulatory and other closing conditions. The transaction is expected to close in approximately 12 months.
Advisors
Greenhill & Co., J.P. Morgan and Evercore Partners acted as financial advisors and Sullivan & Cromwell LLP, Arnold & Porter, and Crowell & Moring provided legal advice to AT&T.

iPad2 One Weeks Later? How Do You Like It??

iPad2 One Weeks Later http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
I do not have an iPad2 so one of the votes above are mine (Don't have a iPad 2) But one of my colleagues does and he is happy about it overall. Except he is pissed off about not having location services or GPS on his WiFi only version. So his verdict is Get a 3G version if you care about location services. (But I do not know if the GPS works if you do not have service activated on a 3G version)
From the poll above, it seems people are happy about it and the poll just began. So hop over to TiPb can cast your vote. More the participation, better the samples will be. I am holding off for a white iPad2 3G or Motorola XOOM WiFi version.
To me the black iPad2 looks like a digital photo frame!

120 SXSW Companies Raising Awareness for Japan Relief With Help From Ubershare.

http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
AUSTIN, Texas, March 16, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Ubershare.com, a new website that launched March 11 is putting its own information sharing technology to use to spread awareness for the Japan relief effort. The campaign has garnered support from more than 120 companies exhibiting at SXSW and strives to bring the Japan crisis and relief effort to the forefront of the Austin conference.
After launching its new sharing rewards platform, Ubershare.com, a site that enables people to offer and earn rewards for helping spread messages, quickly realized that its platform could be used to get the word out on the Japan relief effort.
Says Founder Jason White, “We noticed there were a few very respectable efforts at the South By Southwest conference to raise funds and awareness for Japan, but from our discussions with conference attendees, none of these efforts seemed to be getting significant exposure.” White added “SXSW seems to have an incredible mix of creative, brilliant and connected people who can use their resources to support this type of cause and we realized the technology we built in Ubershare to spread messages could be used to raise cause awareness within that community.”
To put its sharing rewards service to use, Ubershare published an announcement on its site with information about donating to the Red Cross and background on the existing SXSW relief effort. It then applied its own sharing rewards to the announcement, offering $1 in donations to the Red Cross, up to $10,000, for each person visiting www.ubershare.com/japan and using its tracked sharing system to spread the word. To encourage sharing, Ubershare additionally pledged a free SXSW 2012 conference pass to the person most actively spreading awareness.
Once the post went live on March 14, White jumped into action, printing hundreds of Japan awareness signs and scrambling to speak with the various companies exhibiting at the SXSW exhibition hall. Each company was invited to support the initiative by placing an awareness poster somewhere visible at their exhibition booths. By day’s end, more than 120 companies, each listed at the page www.ubershare.com/japan had pledged support by not only putting up posters, but using their social media channels to promote the initiative. Some offered financial matching support as well.
Says White about his company’s effort “We’re genuinely grateful but unsurprised by all the support. The South By Southwest community is incredibly caring, positive, and resourceful and we expected nothing less. But," adds White, “the only thing we actually care about is that folks spread awareness about this relief effort or text the word REDCROSS to 90999 to donate $10.”
