Digium just announced that they are now accepting submissions for the 2011 Asterisk Innovation Awards! The Digium Innovation Award is designed to recognize developers, customers and partners for outstanding achievements with Asterisk that are improving business processes, overcoming technology challenges and enhancing the company’s bottom line. Digium first introduced the Innovation awards at Astricon 2006 and has been an industry wide accepted award and awaited ever since.
This is open to any and all Digium|Asterisk customers and partners world-wide with solutions that are running and in production. There is also no limits to the number of projects and you can submit as many projects as long as you remember that each project requires a separate submission.
Digium will select this year’s winner based upon a number of criteria that include:

I am sure many developers will find it most welcoming as they get to spend one whole day with fellow Asterisk core developers;
where core developers can have direct and uninterrupted access to each other in a more direct way than usual.These sessions often result in massively productive results, either as new features are contemplated and developed, or as old problems are finally vanquished through the application of many eyes and hands. I am happy that I will be in Arizona and now I have something else to look forward to in addition to celebrating 10 years of Asterisk. I have seen what Chris DiBona, Google's open source program manager, do at Google Open Source initiatives and IBM Server and Technology group is not a strange place to me. I would like to hear about Google Open Source and IBM Asterisk initiatives.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala., - July 28, 2009 - Digium® the Asterisk® Company, today announced that Chris DiBona, Google's open source program manager, and Mike Smith, CTO of IBM's server and technology group, will deliver the keynote presentations at AstriCon '09. The AstriCon Open Source Telephony Conference and Exhibition, now in its sixth year, remains the longest running conference devoted to Asterisk, the world's most widely used open source telephony software. This year's conference—which takes place October 13-15, 2009—will focus on Asterisk's mainstream adoption in large enterprises and government agencies. DiBona, an internationally recognized advocate of open source technology, will discuss the role of Google in Open Source projects. Smith is an IBM Distinguished Engineer and CTO for the integrated IBM Smart Business Platform. In his keynote, Smith will discuss how IBM is using Asterisk and other open source technologies to design new solutions for small and mid-sized businesses.

We all know we have a Asterisk experts and Gurus among us. There are many people who have done wonders with this great Open Source Communication Tool we recognize as Asterisk. Then again we have people who scaled Digium or other hardware in building a cluster of IP PBXs based on Asterisk.
Yes a whole world might benefit from your achievements and wonder and that could only be done if you share the story with us.
If you think you got the stuff, Astricon wants to hear from you and you can tell them what you got by filling out the speaker form, You might be telling me how to Asterisk!

John Todd is promising that he will give you a first-class steak dinner at Astricon
if you could accomplish a simple task with Asterisk. It has to do with Asterisk scalability. Here is what Todd had to say;
"To encourage the improvement and testing of larger-scale Asterisk systems, I’d like to repeat here what I mentioned today on the asterisk-dev mailing list: I’m putting out a semi-official challenge in place. The first person to get an Asterisk system moving 10,000 G.711 call legs through a single instance on a single machine will get a first-class steak dinner at Astricon. And a great bottle of wine, if that is your preference."

Digium also announced two keynote speakers for the Astricon '08, Brian Akar From SUN Microsystems / MySQL and Stefan Öberg from Skype. At the same time the track sessions has been expanded this year providing more opportunities for every attendee. I know at least one of us will be in Glendale in September. We would love to hear from Brian about Skype while being in the opposite ends of spectrum of openness and Stefan about MySQL which which is keeping one foot in open source and the Other in commercial world.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala.,— Digium®, Inc., the Asterisk® Company, recently announced that Brian Aker from Sun Microsystems/MySQL and Stefan Öberg from Skype are slated as keynote speakers for AstriCon '08. AstriCon, the world's largest, most informative gathering of expert developers and users of the popular Asterisk telephony platform, also announces expanded track sessions to this year's conference.
Aker, an open source hacker who has worked on various Apache modules, the Slash system and numerous storage engines for the MySQL database, currently serves as the Director of Architecture for My SQL AB. He plans on speaking on the topic of "The Parallel Evolution of MySQL; One Foot in the Commercial World and the other in the Open Source Community."
Öberg is Vice President and General Manager for Skype Telecom and Skype for Business. He has previously served in different positions at Tele2, the Swedish telecom operator, initially in Sweden and later in Estonia and Russia. Öberg is also the founder and chairman of Trigger Software, a wholly owned subsidiary to Tele2. His keynote will focus on VoIP for Business.
The contrast between the Skype network and software model and the Open Source nature of Asterisk and its underlying VoIP protocols may be a controversial topic, but one worthy of exploration. AstriCon is pleased to have secured Stefan as a keynote speaker, and it is certain that his insights will provide an excellent basis for discussions and deliberations well beyond the boundaries of the conference.
