MagicJack iPhone App Debuts

MagicJack iPhone App http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/

Welknown and also well used magicJack, the VoIP service that is offered with a USB device providing free calls for the cost of the device and a yearly fee of $19.99 to users in the U.S. and Canada. Each device purchased Magicjack or Magicjack Plus includes one year service. So the free calls is a kind of misnomer.
It is also very difficult to find any pricing information at the Magicjack site easily. Positive side of this is the happy users. I have a coleague who uses Magicjack and you would not know he is calling you via a VOIP service.
But the news today is that Magicjack has released an iPhone app. magicJack app came to the iTunes App Store this week and lets users make free calls to numbers in the U.S. and Canada and to other magicJack users anywhere in the world at no charge. The app works on all iDevices provided that have iOS 4.0 or higher.

magicJack is not alone in the Free VOIP calling space on the iTunes App store, it  joins the likes of Skype, Viber, netTALK.
Unlikewith the Magicjack devices described above, magicJack App does not require you to create an account before you can start making those free phone calls, (out going only). The App offers you the option to skip account creation and go right to the dialer shown above. By creating an account to get voicemail and a designated magicJack phone number, or information from an existing account one can receive calls through magicJack without using minutes on your cell phone plan. In the U.S. incoming calls count against your cell phone plan).
I have not tried the app yet and many of those who tried praise the app and it's abilities. Many have made calls over wifi and 3G and seem to be satisfied.

MobileMe, iCloud Back in Action After Widespread Outage!

MobileMe Outage http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
Yesterday Apple's MobileMe had a day in the cloud, or more like a day in a cloud burst. According to MacRumors report filed earlier yesterday indicates that the outage has affected as much as 75% of the MobileMe users.
Comments left by MacRumors users indicated that the outage (as high as 75% of users) was also affecting the iCloud and other related services.
Apple is in the works transitioning from MobileMe to iCloud service and this could indicate that The iCloud service is more than a name change and some hardcore changes are taking place. Apple will officially announce iCloud service in October 4th, most probably with iPhone 5 announcement.
The MobileMe service will continue to be available to users until June 30 2012.

SoftBank Japan Get Invaded By Nine, Lovely Androids.

Softbank Android http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
Just had to post this as the post on TechCrunch was too inviting to pass by. Does not matter what it is, Japanese cellphones, always were fine and it is no difference when it comes to Android Phones. In order of what what I liked most, starting with Dell Streak Pro 101DL;

The phone is well equipped and sits well with tech types in Japan. The phone is powered by Android 2.3 running on 1.5GHz dual-core MSM8260 CPU and interacts with the outside world via 4.3-inch AMOLED with 540×960 QHD resolution screen, 8MP CMOS camera, 1.3MP front facing camera, Wi-Fi and of course wireless connectivity.

The next I liked was the Panasonic LUMIX 101P is very attractive with it's Android 2.3 running on 1GHz TI OMAP4430 dual-core CPU. The phone has 4-inch QHD LCD screen with 960×540 resolution but the best part of the phone, a 13.2MP CMOS Lumix sensor powered camera with “Mobile Venus Engine“. The camera has a waterproof body and is compatible with SoftBank’s “Ultra Speed” high-speed data communication service. Of course it comes with Japan's must have e-wallet function and has other sundries like microSDHC support, Wifi, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, infrared connection.
But the TV addicts should love the digital TV tuner.

Then comes the Sharp AQUOS 102SH with Android 2.3 on 1GHz TI OMAP4430 dual-core CPU and get this, a 4.5-inch naked-eye 3D LCD screen with 720×1280 resolution and 329dpi pixel density, nice. Just like the Panasonic, AQUOS also has 12MP CMOS camera with full HD video recording. The phone is compatible with SoftBank’s “Ultra Speed” high-speed data communication service. This phone is also
waterproof body, Wifi, Bluetooth 3.0, DLNA support, microSDHC card, infrared connection, e-wallet function and digital TV tuner
There are six more phones that are slated to show up on SoftBank shelves and you can find them, at least photos and information on TechCrunch.

Free Press Challenges Wireless Provisions Of FCC's Open Internet Rules.

FCC's Open Internet Rules. http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
Free Press a prominent Public interest group filed a petition today challenging U.S. Internet rules set to go into effect November 20. The petition challenges the provisions of the rules that leave more flexibility for wireless broadband be controlled by the carriers.

"When the FCC first proposed the Open Internet rules, they came with the understanding that there is only one Internet, no matter how people choose to reach it. The final rules provide some basic protections for consumers, but do not deliver on the promise to preserve openness for mobile Internet access. They fail to protect wireless users from discrimination, and they let mobile providers block innovative applications with impunity. Our challenge will show that there is no evidence in the record to justify this arbitrary distinction between wired and wireless Internet access. The disparity that the FCC's rules create is unjust and unjustified." Said Free Press Director Matt Woods.

BOSTON -- Free Press filed today in the First Circuit Court of Appeals in Boston a petition for review of the Federal Communications Commission's December 2010 Open Internet order. The Federal Register published the new rules last week, opening the window for such lawsuits.
Free Press, headquartered in Western Massachusetts, will challenge the arbitrary nature of rule provisions that provide less protection for mobile wireless Internet access than they do for wired connections.
Free Press Policy Director Matt Wood made the following statement:
"When the FCC first proposed the Open Internet rules, they came with the understanding that there is only one Internet, no matter how people choose to reach it. The final rules provide some basic protections for consumers, but do not deliver on the promise to preserve openness for mobile Internet access. They fail to protect wireless users from discrimination, and they let mobile providers block innovative applications with impunity.
"Our challenge will show that there is no evidence in the record to justify this arbitrary distinction between wired and wireless Internet access. The disparity that the FCC's rules create is unjust and unjustified. And it's especially problematic because of the increasing popularity of wireless, along with its increasing importance for younger demographics and diverse populations who rely on mobile devices as their primary means for getting online.
"Free Press will fight in court to make these rules stronger, even as we work elsewhere to uphold the FCC's crucial role in promoting openness and equality on the Internet."

Kindle Fire Is Not A Tablet, It Is A Service! Bezos.

Kindle Fire Is Not A Tablet http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
Looks like it is, after getting some specs on the Amazon Kindle Fire, it looks like it is an enhanced e-reader rather than a tablet. So Apple can still breath a relief and I feel that the Amazon Kindle fire 2 rumor, more convincing.
Kindle fire does not have High MP cameras or 3G but it has dual core processor and a 7" IPS screen. Of course it comes with free Amazon Cloud storage and unlike Apple iPads, you can sync, whispersync, without cables! :) . Bezo's words, not mine.
But at $199 there is not much to complain when you look at the services Amazon offers, Music, Movies and Books. Also do not forget Amazon's own Android Appstore!
Going over the Kindle Fire, it's 7-inch 16-million color IPS display with a wide viewing angle and better color saturation. The display is protected by Gorilla glass, just like my Asus EEE Pad Transformer. The resolution is much denser than that of iPad. iPad has 132 pixels per inch and Kindle Fire packs 169 pixels per inch.
It has 8 Gigabytes of memory but don't fret over it too much. Unlike on other tablets, including iPad, this 8GB is a holding cell for Amazon's massive cloud. Like it can cache apps and services you use most, the rest will stay on the cloud until needed. Just think of Kindle Fire having limitless (as much as Amazon cloud storage) storage.
As we mentioned above, Kindle Fire is powered by a dual core CPU and Wi-Fi is the connectivity medium. All syncing is done via Whispersync, invisibly, in the background via wireless connection. Switching viewing options is also a breeze. You can finish watching at home, on TV, the movie you started watching during your lunch break at the office.

New Amazon Kindle Fire!

Just the image and the price ($199!) for now but it looks hot! watch out Apple, you ARE going to have a warehouse problems!

Microsoft and Samsung Gets In To A Smartphone Patent Bind. Samsung Pays.

Well, this is some news to wake up to. Samsung has entered in to an agreement with Microsoft regarding Android and windows phones. Under the terms of the agreement, Microsoft will receive royalties for Samsung’s mobile phones and tablets running the Android mobile platform and yes, Android Patents are pretty hard to come by. they will also be developing and marketing windows phone.

“Through the cross-licensing of our respective patent portfolios, Samsung and Microsoft can continue to bring the latest innovations to the mobile industry, We are pleased to build upon our long history of working together to open a new chapter of collaboration beginning with our Windows Phone “Mango” launch this fall.” ” said Dr. Won-Pyo Hong, executive vice president of global product strategy at Samsung’s mobile communication division.

Man what happened to the Android protection from Google Motorola deal? Looks like everyone in Android Arena, running for their own cover.

Kindle Fire Set Ablaze With Rumors About Kindle Fire 2!

Kindle Fire, Kindle Fire 2! http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
With all the Kindle fire from Amazon rumors, I found this to be most amusing. Gdgt has received some news from a reliable source, which some commenters thought some one from Apple's PR department, the real Kindle fire tablet will come in the first quarter of 2012.
If that the case, I would have named the tablet, Aztec, keeping with the Amazon like theme and 2012, where the Mayan calendar ends. Perhaps Aztec can do something to the Apple empire.
In any case 7" playbook look alike Android Tablet, can eat in to some of the iPad profit, which some sources say already in a slump.
You can read all about Kindle fire 2 on GDGT

Let' Talk iPhone, Apple's iPhone 5 Invitation.

Let' Talk iPhone 5 http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
Apple sent out invitations today for the much awaited iPhone 5 event on October 4th. The event will be held at Apple headquarters in Cupertino, California.
Most people wondered about the venue because usual place for Apple releases, Moscone Center in San Francisco has been booked by Oracle for it's annual gala, and those who knows the Apple campus know that the auditorium is too small for a such event as iPhone 5 release.
So now all the rumors could be laid to rest and wait for the iPhone 5. Wait, there might yet be rumors about the actual shelf date and of course how it looks like. Speech Recognition is one such rumor alive as of today!

DisneyAppmates Makes will make you invest on Screen and back protectors http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
Next to all the kids, the screen protector manufacturers must be the most happy with this announcement of Disney(DIS) Appmates. Basically a bunch of Disney toy cars from the CARS 2, Disney•Pixar Cars 2 Miniature vehicles with sensors on the base of each toy that are recognized as a unique footprint by an app with no cable or Bluetooth connection required. The App could be downloaded from the Apple iTunes Store.

I wonder if those lifetime warrenty on screen protectors will have fine lines reading, except when used with Disney toys!

Press Release;
Disney Introduces Appmates Mobile Application Toys – First Toy to Allow Kids to Use Apple iPad® as Virtual Play Mat

Cars 2 Appmates Let Kids Explore the World of Cars, Perform Missions, and Compete In Action-Packed Races

NEW YORK--(EON: Enhanced Online News)--In an industry first, Disney introduced today Disney AppMATesTM Mobile Application Toys, a new toy line that comes to life digitally when used with an Apple iPad by allowing kids to use the tablet’s screen as a virtual play mat. Developed in collaboration between Disney Consumer Products (DCP) and Disney Mobile and featuring patent-pending technology, the Appmates toy line features miniature Disney•Pixar Cars 2 vehicles with sensors on the base of each toy that are recognized as a unique footprint by an app with no cable or Bluetooth connection required. Simply download the free Cars 2 Appmates app from the iTunes app store, place your favorite Appmates toy character on the screen and play.

“We have cracked the technology code in changing the way kids play with their toys,” said Sunny Lauridsen, director of digital toys for DCP. “Kids will always use toys to play out their favorite Disney stories, but Disney Appmates now allows them to include technology which has become a way of life for them through a beautifully rich app.”

The magic begins when kids place their vehicle on the iPad and begin to explore the world of Cars. Available for download in early to mid-October, Cars 2 Appmates app is a free app created by Disney exclusively for use with Appmates toys. By guiding the Appmates vehicle on the screen, the iPad becomes a virtual play mat where kids can experience the world of Radiator Springs.

“We believe iPad is becoming a critical canvas for the next generation of storytelling, and with Appmates we’re bringing Disney characters to life in a way never previously imagined,” said Bart Decrem, general manager of Disney Mobile.

Cars 2 Appmates features include:

* Exploration – Drive around the world of Radiator Springs to discover landscapes and hidden secrets by simply placing the Cars toy character on the screen and turning it in any direction. Drive through mud and up ramps, visit friends at Flo’s V8 Café or check out your Car’s reflection, showing off your latest gear and gadgets.
* Directed Game Play – Perform missions unique to each character. Completed missions – like helping bring a tow hook back to Mater – gain hubcaps, the virtual currency. Collect enough hubcaps to personalize each car with special features like a unique horn sound, customized tire tracks, and cool gear like a rocket launcher or spy vision goggles.
* Racing – Rev up the action by racing against World Grand Prix opponents and your Radiator Springs friends. Five racetracks are available at launch. Race around Willy’s Butte, jump off Carburetor Mesa and roar through downtown Radiator Springs earning hubcaps in day or night races.

Each toy unlocks different features and content within the app specific to the character, allowing kids to come back over and over to enjoy an imaginative, open-ended play experience using the Appmates toys. Fans can download and test the app by simply using their fingers to drive a virtual car through the world, but the play experience is optimized to come to life with the Appmates toy vehicles.

Created in collaboration with Spin Master, Disney Appmates toys are available starting Oct. 1 at national retailers, Apple Store, Apple Store online, Disney Store and DisneyStore.com with vehicle two-packs (SRP $19.99) featuring four characters including Lightning McQueen, Tow Mater, Finn McMissile, and Holley Shiftwell. Two additional characters – Francesco Bernoulli and Shu Todoroki – will launch in November and be available exclusively through Apple Store and Apple Store online.

With dominant market share, the Apple iPad has become the leading tablet and a shared family device. Just in time for the holiday season, DCP will also introduce an expanded line of ‘appcessory’ products to engage and inspire creativity with kids using the iPad. Products include a durable and protective iPad case featuring a Disney•Pixar Cars design (SRP $49.99); Disney Pix Camera that allows kids to take their own pictures and connect them back to the iPad to personalize photos and create albums (SRP $79.99); and Disney Spotlight mic that gives kids a fun way to sing along – karaoke style – with their favorite Disney music (SRP $59.99 wired mic, $99.99 wireless mic).

T-Mobile Unveils Samsung Galaxy SII, HTC Amaze 4G And Sonic™ 4G Mobile HotSpot At Mobilize 2011

Samsung Galaxy SII, HTC Amaze 4G And Sonic™ 4G Mobile HotSpot At Mobilize 2011 http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/

Today T-Mobile unveiled a bunch of true 4G stuff at Mobilize 2011. The HTC Amaze™ 4G and Samsung Galaxy S™ II will be T-Mobile’s fastest smartphones joining the T-Mobile® Sonic™ 4G Mobile HotSpot, the company’s fastest 4G (HSPA+ 42) mobile hotspot.
It will really be fine to hold a Samsung Galaxy S™ II in your hand (I am more inclined towards this phone, together with Atrix 4G and upcoming iPhone 5) and you holding a fine machine that can take care of  most of your day to day needs, at blazing connection speeds. No wonder Apple is not beating around the bush and going for the Samsung jugular. But at the mean time, you and anyone else get to try it before iPhone 5 comes out on October 4 or when ever.

Following is the T-Mobile press release;

2011-09-26 19:26:55 (T-Mobile) Today at GigaOm Mobilize 2011, T-Mobile USA Chief Marketing Officer Cole Brodman outlined the company’s ongoing efforts to fuel consumer adoption of mobile data through increased speeds of America’s Largest 4G Network®, rate plans that make mobile data more affordable, and new devices that take advantage of the company’s faster 4G network and value.
Unveiled during the T-Mobile keynote address at Mobilize 2011, the HTC Amaze™ 4G and Samsung Galaxy S™ II will be T-Mobile’s fastest smartphones and the first smartphones to take advantage of T-Mobile’s faster 4G (HSPA+ 42) network technology. The new smartphones will allow customers to browse the Web faster than on the average home Internet and are showing average download speeds approaching 8 Mbps with peak speeds around 20 Mbps on  T-Mobile’s 4G network1. Both smartpthones are expected to be available next month.

In addition, T-Mobile today announced the T-Mobile® Sonic™ 4G Mobile HotSpot, the company’s fastest 4G (HSPA+ 42) mobile hotspot, providing customers with access to
T-Mobile’s fastest 4G speeds on up to five Wi-Fi enabled devices. America’s Largest 4G Network, which is now faster than ever with the 4G technology of HSPA+ 42, reaches more than 170 million Americans in more than 150 markets throughout the United States.

“These new products unlock the full potential of our faster 4G network and deliver the best experience yet for watching video, surfing the Web, and creating and sharing content on the go,” said Cole Brodman, chief marketing officer, T-Mobile USA. “A 4G connection delivers a much improved experience, which entices consumers to do more with the devices they carry. We’ve seen that first hand; customers with 4G devices on our network consume roughly three times as much data compared as those with 3G devices. Smartphone buyers are increasingly looking for built-in 4G capability, and we’re offering what we believe is the best 4G product portfolio in the industry.”

HTC Amaze 4G
Exclusively available from T-Mobile, the HTC Amaze 4G features the most advanced camera experience of any smartphone and is the latest in T-Mobile’s family of advanced camera smartphones. PerfectPics™, which is a separate album in the gallery created by scoring and filtering the best photos to the surface. PerfectPics prioritizes photos by using criteria such as important calendar events, the presence of faces, and overall picture quality.
Additional innovative camera features first introduced on the T-Mobile myTouch® 4G Slide such as SweepShot™, ClearShot HDR™ and BurstShot™.

The Sonic 4G Mobile HotSpot is T-Mobile’s fastest mobile hotspot, providing access to
T-Mobile’s 4G (HSPA+ 42) network for up to five Wi-Fi enabled devices including iPads, music players, gaming consoles, laptops, cameras and eReaders, among other devices, all from virtually anywhere. Drive This Car Up The Wall With Your iPhone

iOS controlled Car http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
If you ever dreamed driving like Batman, up the wall, now you can, at least a small model car. iHelicopters have introduced the IW500, a two tone (Blue / Silver or Red / Silver) iPhone Controlled Wall Climbing Car / RC racing car. By applying vacuum seals to defy the gravity, car is able to climb up the wall and even traverse the ceiling, if you managed to get it on the ceiling.

The iPhone Controlled Wall Climbing Car iW500 is a RC Car that climbs walls and drives on ceilings. It works by using the opposite principle of the hovercraft and creates a sealed vacuum between itself and the wall or ceiling. This allows the car to do amazing stunts. Just flip the switch, place the car on a wall, and you can drive up, down, left and right without falling off. You can even drive on the underside of tables and ceilings if the surface is smooth enough.

Just set the car switch to vacuum off, and it becomes a remote controlled racing car. Now, I wonder if it will work on my iPhone 5, that I might be getting on October 4th!

The display is like that of EEE Pad Transformer in size, a 10.1-inch IPS multi-touch display with 178 degree viewing angles. The unit is powered by a 25 W/h Li-polymer battery good for up to 8 hours of continuous use.
Well if it to your liking, you can see it being un-boxed here.

Neustar May Bring Texting To And From Without A Cell Phone, From Any Digital Communication Device.

Texting from Any device http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/

Looks like we all are hooked to Texting and can't do without it. It may have been the same reason that AT&T raised the fee for texting almost double. Phone companies do not spend money to provide you with texting and the SMS rides on the communication channel that checks the connectivity with the cell phone towers. But AT&T and other carriers charge you for texting, making a killing on people's addiction to texting.

But that monopoly capability of carriers may come to an end, may be not end but make a dent due to a new discovery. IEEE is reporting that one company has found a way to send text (SMS) from any device to any device, providing they are capable of typing the message and displaying the same. The company is Neustar, the official administrator of the North American Numbering Plan. That is heavy as it can come. Neustar keeps track of 1.8 billion phone numbers around the world and 2.8 billion IP addresses and they are ever increasing, I meant the numbers.
Neustar, is about to free texting from the confinements of cellphones that carriers stick in your face most of the time and let us text ((SMS) to and from a capable device as we mentioned.
IEEE Spectrum interviewed Neustar's vice president of marketing for carrier services, Jean Foster.

Skype On iOS Has A Big Open Door, Opens Your Address Book To The Net!

Skype On iOS Has A Big Open Door http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
Security firm Superevr has revealed that Skype for iOS, like Skype for iPhone has a big hole that lets scrupulous people access one's data, like Address book. The Cross-Site Scripting vulnerability exists in the "Chat Message" window in Skype 3.0.1 and earlier versions for iPhone and iPod Touch devices.
The cuprit of the open door seems to be Skype's lack of encoding of in coming messages user name and the URI scheme set to "file://" instead of "about:blank" or similar. Even with Apple's protective measures in place, it is harder to tap into other files on the system but common and open files (to applications) like address book are vulnerable.

File system access is partially mitigated by the iOS Application sandbox that Apple has implemented, preventing an attacker from accessing certain sensitive files. However, every iOS application has access to the users AddressBook, and Skype is no exception. I created a proof of concept injection and attack that shows that a users AddressBook can indeed be stolen from an iPhone or iPod touch with this vulnerability.

AT&T 4G LTE Goes Alive In Five Markets

AT&T 4G LTE http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
AT&T went alive today with AT&T 4G LTE service in Dallas-Forth Worth, San Antonio, Houston, Atlanta, and Chicago.(See the coverage map above.) AT&T had the service alive in these markets for a while but the today's announcement makes it official. The carrier also mentioned that by the end of 2011 to expand 4G LTE coverage and plan to reach at least 70 million Americans in 15 major metropolitan areas. While this seem to be encouraging news, I just hope it's service, any, becomes better in the east bay, San Francisco Bay area. Everyday it looks like more and more, a Texas company :)

Sprint Hails DoJ Decision To Block AT&T-Tmobile Merger

AT&T-Tmobile Merger http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
Sprint issued an statement on Friday supporting the DoJ and seven state attorneys opposing the merger between AT&T and T-Mobile, ATTT or ATTTMobile. Department of Justice amended it's complaint against the AT&T T-Mobile merger in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.

WASHINGTON--(EON: Enhanced Online News)--This afternoon, the U.S. Department of Justice announced that seven state attorneys general representing California, Illinois, Massachusetts, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Washington joined the department’s lawsuit against AT&T, T-Mobile and Deutsche Telekom. The Justice Department filed its amended complaint in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.

Vonya McCann, Sprint Nextel (NYSE: S) senior vice president for Government Affairs, issued the following statement:

“After a comprehensive review of the facts related to AT&T’s proposed takeover of T-Mobile, seven state attorneys general have reached the same conclusion as the U.S. Department of Justice: This proposed takeover violates antitrust law and would harm consumers, competition and our nation’s economy. This is a strong stand for American consumers, and Sprint commends this bipartisan group of state attorneys general for joining with the U.S. Justice Department to protect consumers, competition and American jobs.”

FCC Will Begin White Space Database Tests On Sep 19, 2011

Super WiFi tests http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
FCC announced that it will begin testing a new database of that will allow a bunch of new gadgets, devices and systems to traverse the white space airwaves and determine if they could participate in the Super WiFi initiative that the agency, nearly a year ago.
The tests will continue for 45 days but could extend if FCC determines that it is necessary. Wireless MIc and cable operators are invited to register with the database to test it.
The site for testing Spectrum Bridge is up but if you visit it you will find that the links are not alive yet. I guess it will become really liVe on Now. 19TH.

Office of Engineering and Technology Announces the Opening of Public Testing for Spectrum Bridge's TV Band Database System
ET Docket No. 04-186

The Commission's Office of Engineering and Technology (OET) announces that on September 19, 2011, it will commence a 45-day public trial of Spectrum Bridge Inc.'s TV band database system. This is a limited trial that is intended principally to allow the public to access and test Spectrum Bridge's database system to ensure that it correctly identifies channels that are available for unlicensed TV band devices, properly registers those facilities entitled to protection, and provides protection to authorized services and registered facilities as specified in the rules. We encourage all interested parties to test the database and provide appropriate feedback to Spectrum Bridge.

The Commission's Part 15 rules (47 C.F.R. § 15.701 et seq.) require that unlicensed TV band devices contact an authorized database system to obtain a list of channels that are available for their operation (i.e., channels not occupied by authorized radio services) at their individual locations and must operate only on those channels. Such devices are required to provide their geographic location, by means of a secure Internet connection, to a TV band database system authorized by the Commission. The database will then return a list of the channels available for operation by the device for its reported location.

As part of its authorization process for TV band database systems, the Commission stated that each database will be subject to a public trial period of not less than 45 days to ensure that the database is providing accurate results before it is allowed to be made available for regular public use. OET has examined Spectrum Bridge's channel availability calculator and finds that it is ready for trial testing by the public.
Trial Access and Details

Parties may participate in the trial by accessing Spectrum Bridge's TV band database test facility at: http://whitespaces.spectrumbridge.com/Trial.aspx. This website provides a description of the trial, instructions for participation, details on use of the database system, access to the database's various capabilities, and a link for providing feedback to Spectrum Bridge. Note that the test facility will not be active before the date the trial is scheduled to commence.

During this trial, participants are encouraged to test
• the channel availability calculator;
• the cable headend and broadcast auxiliary temporary receive site registration utilities; and
• the wireless microphone registration utility
to ensure that each of these elements of the database system is working properly and providing the interference protection required under our rules.

In addition, participants are encouraged to report any inaccuracies or other issues with any aspect of the database system to Spectrum Bridge through the response facility on the trial's website. Spectrum Bridge will respond, as appropriate, to such reports with an explanation and notification of any responsive actions it may take, as appropriate. During the trial, Spectrum Bridge may apply any corrective measures it determines are needed and will advise participants of such measures through the trial's website.

As indicated above, the trial of the Spectrum Bridge database system is currently scheduled to last for 45 days and will end on November 2, 2011. However, if the results of the trial indicate that additional testing is necessary, OET may extend the trial period.

After the close of the trial, Spectrum Bridge will provide a summary report to OET that identifies: (1) problems reported and their disposition; and (2) descriptions of changes made to the channel availability calculator or registration systems. Once Spectrum Bridge submits its report, we will provide a short period of time for interested parties to submit comments on the report. Note that the successful performance of the database system through this trial is only one element in the commission's evaluation of a system for approval to operate. Other requirements for TV band database systems are set forth in 47 C.F.R. 15.701 et seq. and OET's January 26, 2011 Order on TV band database administrators (see Order in ET Docket No. 04-186, DA 11-131). OET would grant final approval for Spectrum Bridge to operate its database system with certified TV band devices once it determines that the system complies with all of the applicable rules and requirements. The public will be informed of such decision through a Public Notice.

The FCC rules require that TV band database systems protect the following radio services: (1) broadcast television stations (including full power, TV translator, low power TV, and Class A stations); (2) fixed broadcast auxiliary service links; (3) receive sites (and received channels) of TV translator, low power TV and Class A TV stations and multichannel video programming distributors (MVPDs); (4) private land mobile radio service and commercial mobile radio service operations; (5) offshore radio telephone service operations; (6) radio astronomy operations at specific sites; and (7) low power auxiliary service operations (principally licensed and certain approved unlicensed wireless microphone venue sites). Except for MVPD receive sites, sites where licensed wireless microphones are used, and approved unlicensed wireless microphone venues, the necessary protection data will either be extracted by Spectrum Bridge from the Commission's databases or are specified in the rules. Operators of facilities for which information is contained in the Commission's records or provided in the rules do not need to take any action to obtain protection from TV band devices.

Operators of MVPD receive sites and wireless microphones users must specifically register their sites to receive protection from TV band devices. As required under the rules, Spectrum Bridge is providing a registration capability for these facilities. These registration capabilities are available through the database test facility at: http://whitespaces.spectrumbridge.com/Trial.aspx. The rules also provide that responsible parties may request that the Commission approve registrations for protection of venues where large numbers of unlicensed wireless microphones are used. Such requests for registration will first be made available for public comment, and the Commission will subsequently review them for approval. However, the Commission has not yet completed the development of its process for acceptance and approval of registrations for these venues. In the interim and for purposes of this trial, Spectrum Bridge, with OET's approval, has implemented a test registration capability for registration of venues where unlicensed wireless microphones are used; this test registration capability is also available through Spectrum Bridge's the database test facility.

Registrations for MVPD receive sites, sites where licensed wireless microphones are used, and venues where large numbers of wireless microphones are used that are made during the trial period will be deleted by Spectrum Bridge after the trial. Parties will be able to register their MVPD receive sites and sites where licensed wireless microphones are used in the database once general operation of the database for use by TV band devices is approved and implemented. Parties responsible for venues where large numbers of wireless microphones are used will need to request registration approval by the Commission once the Commission's process for that function is activated. We encourage parties responsible for MVPD receive sites and licensed wireless microphone operations to enter trial registrations and make use of these capabilities in their testing of Spectrum Bridge's database. OET will provide notice of, and time for, affected parties to enter active registrations into Spectrum Bridge's database during the process for final approval of the Spectrum Bridge database system for full operation. We also note that once one or more additional database systems are approved and active, all registrations entered with a given database will be communicated to the other database(s) so that registrations will not need to be entered with multiple databases.

The TV bands database systems are the subject of a docketed proceeding, ET Docket No. 04-186, and responses to the trial of Spectrum Bridge's database system conducted pursuant to this public notice may be filed with the Commission at any time using the FCC's Electronic Comment Filing System (ECFS) as described below. A simplified interface for ECFS has been implemented to facilitate consumer comment. Documents filed on ECFS may be accessed and reviewed on that system, which contains copies of written submissions and summaries of oral submissions regarding the white spaces proceeding.

Pursuant to sections 1.415 and 1.419 of the Commission's rules, 47 CFR §§ 1.415, 1.419, interested parties may file comments and reply comments on the trial of Spectrum Bridge's database system at any time during and after the trial period. Comments may be filed using the Commission's Electronic Comment Filing System (ECFS). See Electronic Filing of Documents in Rulemaking Proceedings, 63 FR 24121 (1998).

• Electronic Filers: Comments may be filed electronically using the Internet by accessing the ECFS: http://fjallfoss.fcc.gov/ecfs2/.

Celebrating Technology and Fashion
The LG Fashion Week campaign pairs Stacy London's impeccable style with the innovative, futuristic eye of MADE. London brings years of fashion-industry experience to her LG style mentor role and will provide each of the MADE designers with creative consulting sessions as they design fashion-forward carrying cases to showcase the clean, modern, minimalist styling of LG Marquee. Participating MADE designers include Kevork Kiledjian, Katie Gallagher, The Lake and Stars, Erickson Beamon and Christian Cota.

"Being able to give our designers yet another platform for growth and exposure is part of the DNA of MADE; and allowing our designers to interact with major brands like LG is a great learning tool for future partnerships," said Jenne Lombardo, Co-Director of MADE.

Celebrating a partnership of Sprint and LG's rich style heritage, the campaign highlights the increasing influence of technology on today's design community and includes a Fashion Week panel discussion and product launch reception hosted by London at Milk Studios on Thursday, Sept. 15. The MADE panel discussion, entitled "How Fashion Communicates," will be moderated by Simon Collins, dean of fashion at Parsons The New School for Design, and will take an in-depth look at five key areas where technology has altered fashion design. As part of the esteemed panel, London will provide industry insights to discussion categories including designer communication, the rise of the blogger, public access to real-time happenings, retail and the shift from print to digital media.

The chic and functional LG Marquee carrying cases created by the participating designers will debut on Sept. 15 during LG's launch event at MADE FASHION WEEK. The event will feature individual designer stations that will display the inspiration behind each case. In addition, at the end of the evening, London will announce her top designer pick for the overall campaign.

Once in a while an app comes along and you say "Hah" and Smozzy does that. Even though limited to T-Mobile network, the app which is in beta, allows one to browse the web without a data plan.
Smozzy does that by using you unlimited messaging plan via SMS and MMS, just like your Android browser does with a data plan.(Due to the large number of messages sent and received, it is recommended that those without an unlimited messaging plan not try this app)
So if you are on T-Mobile and have an unlimited data plan on either Nexus S or HTC G2 phones, head over to the Android Appstore, Android Market. If you want to join the discussion about the app, hacker news is the place.

Why Would Google Pay $12.5 Billion For Motorola Mobility? Four Possibilities!

Why Will Google Pay $12.5 Billion For Motorola Mobile? Four Possibilities! http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
We all were surprised when we heard that Google is willing to pay $12.5 Billion for Motorola Mobility (MMI) to get the company and it's assets into Google's (GOOG) fold. No one really know the answer yet but FOSS Patents have brought together four possible scenarios;

  1. MMI would have taken a royalty-bearing patent license from Microsoft (MSFT), and possibly also settled with Apple (AAPL).
  2. MMI would have revisited its exclusive focus on Android and possibly adopted Windows Phone.
