Microsoft and Samsung Gets In To A Smartphone Patent Bind. Samsung Pays.

Well, this is some news to wake up to. Samsung has entered in to an agreement with Microsoft regarding Android and windows phones. Under the terms of the agreement, Microsoft will receive royalties for Samsung’s mobile phones and tablets running the Android mobile platform and yes, Android Patents are pretty hard to come by. they will also be developing and marketing windows phone.

“Through the cross-licensing of our respective patent portfolios, Samsung and Microsoft can continue to bring the latest innovations to the mobile industry, We are pleased to build upon our long history of working together to open a new chapter of collaboration beginning with our Windows Phone “Mango” launch this fall.” ” said Dr. Won-Pyo Hong, executive vice president of global product strategy at Samsung’s mobile communication division.

Man what happened to the Android protection from Google Motorola deal? Looks like everyone in Android Arena, running for their own cover.

Microsoft Sues Motorola Over Patent(s) Involving Android Phones.

If you were wondering why patent lawyers of big companies been some what quiet, fret no more. The Patent Machine at M$, yes it is Microsoft, is suing Motorola over it's Android based phones. Microsoft has filed action against smartphone rival/partner in the ITC, International Trade Commission, and the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington for alleged infringement of nine patents of M$. all related to Android Phones! The patents seem to cover, " synchronizing email, calendars and contacts, scheduling meetings, and notifying applications of changes in signal strength and battery power" Yes currently I do all those on my phone(s). I wonder if Apple, Google are breaking those patents or have signed license agreements.
I assume a lot of people are interested in the out come and I hope something will resolve with these ridiculous patents.
Microsoft Press Release;

REDMOND, Wash. – Oct. 1, 2010 – Microsoft Corp. today filed a patent infringement action against Motorola, Inc. and issued the following statement from Horacio Gutierrez, corporate vice president and deputy general counsel of Intellectual Property and Licensing:

"Microsoft filed an action today in the International Trade Commission and in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington against Motorola, Inc. for infringement of nine Microsoft patents by Motorola's Android-based smartphones. The patents at issue relate to a range of functionality embodied in Motorola's Android smartphone devices that are essential to the smartphone user experience, including synchronizing email, calendars and contacts, scheduling meetings, and notifying applications of changes in signal strength and battery power.

We have a responsibility to our customers, partners, and shareholders to safeguard the billions of dollars we invest each year in bringing innovative software products and services to market. Motorola needs to stop its infringement of our patented inventions in its Android smartphones."
