Reset Your iPhone To Factory Setting. (Low Level Format Your iPhone)

Update now you can Reset iPhone 3GS, iPhone To Factory Setting with iTunes way.

Now that iPhone 3Gs is ready to come out, may be this ought to be in order. Resetting iPhone to it's pristine factory setting can take very long time but it is not a hard thing to do.
This is not same as "iPhone Restore", restore just pretend to reset the iPhone and your information are still contained within the iPhone and a technically capable person is able to pull out these data and compromise private information. It is better to completely erase the information before selling or giving away your iPhone.
This article will guide you through Apple implemented low level formatting of your iPhone, thus completely erasing your information from the iPhone so that a regular person will not be able to pull up your information.

One prerequisite for this procedure is that you be running iPhone 2.0 or above on your phone. Check the version you are running by selecting;
SETTINGS --> GENERAL --> ABOUT (From the photo below, you can see that I am running version 2.2.1)If your iPhone says anything less, you can upgrade by connecting to iTunes and selecting "Check For Update" within iTunes. The upgrade is necessary for complete reset of iPhone, the earlier versions did not offer this capability.
Once you have confirmed that your iPhone is running a iPhone OS 2.0 or above, you can begin the reset procedure.

1) Connect your iPhone to a Power Source, the resetting can take a long time and it is better to connect to your wall mount charger as you need to leave it on during the process.
2)Again select SETTINGS--> GENERAL--> RESET on your iPhone and you will be presented with a bunch of choices but select "Erase All Content and Settings" as shown bellow.3) Now you will be presented with the warning "This will delete all media and data, and the reset all settings. This will take about an hour" and the option to "Erase iPhone" as shown below.
Make sure that the power stay connected to the iPhone and sit back and relax. within about an hour, you will have an iPhone with factory setting, all your information erased.
Now you can sell your iPhone and get a new iPhone 3GS! once it is released.

Hi I tried to hard reset my unlocked iPhone using this method. After 3 hours, it is still showing the Apple icon. Do you think this is normal?

Thanks,

Hold down the home button on the phone whilst plugging in the usb cable. This will then allow you to reinstall iPhone OS from iTunes.

I followed instructions as on the blog. The process finished but now the phone is frozen!
What do I do?
Its been 4.5 hours...

Hi Anon,
This is not something trivial, If you followed the instructions, should have worked. I have tried it many a times.
Did you have it on power? and the process can take a very long time. My experience varied from 1 hour to 1hour and 20 min on 8 and 16GB iPhone 3g, respectively.

i did exactly the same thing but it's been 2days and it is still reseting - though i can still see the apple logo, it will turn blank and the apple logo will appear again. my husband told me that the former owner has about 5,000 songs in it. do you think it will take that long to erase the songs? please, i need help.

HI Mommyof3
I think it is too long but keep it plugged in, my test iPhone with barely anything on it took about two hours.
Best

using this method, will it erase also the apps installed from cydia? on a jailbraked 3gs?

ravenII said...

samsam, it is a complete reset, even though I have not tried, I think it will erase all.

Hi Anon,
Two days is bit too long, did you had it plugged in all the time? Power is very important.

Anonymous said...

Hi Ravenll,

Thx for answer. I had for 1st day, then I disconeccted it for some time. And then when I reconnected it yesterday after I read this posts, it is still rebooting over and over. It looks like this: apple logo appears, you can see progress bar - round one - being active for more or less 10 minutes, then it reset itself and apple logo appears again, and so on... What do you think? It is 32gb.

thx

1) Plug the phone in to your computer.
2) Turn it off while its plugged in.
3) Hold the POWER button for 10 seconds.
4) Now hold the Home button WITH the Power button for another 5 seconds.
5) Let go of the Power button.
6) Keep on holding Home button for 30 seconds.
Then restore your firmware
I will write another article on this issues.

Hi again,

Thx Ravenll for info. I have managed to restore to firmware, however it does not work, it sayz THE SIM CARD INSERTED IN THIS IPHONE DOES NOT APPEAR TO BE SUPPORTED, ONLY COMPATIBILE SIMCARDS FROM A SUPPORTED CARRIER MAY BE USED TO ACTIVATE IPHONE. Now before I attempted to reset all the settings to factory defaults it was working fine with the same sim card as now... Do you know what may causing the issue?

thx

I think you did not finish the last part where is tells you to activate iPhone. You should be connected to internet to do so.
If you are not on approved networks, better check on redsn0w.

Hey Guys!

I literally just had this problem where my phone froze all night after I did the hard reset. I read this forum and none of the solutions helped sooo I tried something:

1)Plug it into iTunes (it probably won't detect your phone)

2)Hold down the home button and power button as if to reset, while it is still plugged into your computer. DO NOT release the buttons until you see the picture of the USB pointing at the iTunes logo. (iTunes should now have detected your device)

3)In iTunes, a warning will appear saying that your phone is in a reset mode and that it needs to be restored. So, just hit the restore button and it will fix the problem!

***Your phone should now have a status bar under the apple logo - meaning it is reloading all the information.

Hope that helped!

I was going to sell my 3GS and try to erase and reset it.

I had over 2000 songs on it and it is a JB and Unlock phone. I have read a youtube video and that guy took over 30 days!!! OMG...

However, my phone was in the stage of apple logo.. restart etc for also very long... it has been over a week to 10 days and I am still waiting and praying....

I had the phone plugged in to the power, but seems like that the phone is not charging... it is always a the lower battery stage... low to the red zone.

I am still waiting .. and waiting... does anyone has this experience?? does anyone's phone takes anytime more than a week or 2 weeks to erase and reset?

i am not even sure if I have brick it or not.

Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ravenII said...

Alan, this is simply too long, If I were you I would try resetting it. If you have your stuff backed up via iTunes, then you can follow following steps to get it back;
1) Plug the phone in to your computer.
2) Turn it off while its plugged in.
3) Hold the POWER button for 10 seconds.
4) Now hold the Home button WITH the Power button for another 5 seconds or until USB/iTunes logs come up.
5) let go of the buttons and restore firmware.

Hey ravenll i still have a question, if what you said will work and restore your phone, it will restore it to 4.1? and then what can i do beacause it will lock my phone, and use it just as an i pod, no?

ravenII said...

Hi Deia, I have not tested this procedure with iOS 4.1 but I will be soon restoring a iPhone 3G with iOS 4.1 as one of my friends is having trouble with his phone. I will write up or update this post once I am done.

hi friends..... same problem is with me on my iphone i have reset the iphone. by SETTINGD--> GENERAL--> RESET and then Erase all comtent and settings... then after 2 hours, it is still showing the Apple icon. and the progress bar - round one - being active for more or less 10 minutes, then it reset itself and apple logo appears again, and so on... what i should do..??
plz help me....!!!

ravenII said...

Hi Gulshan,
First try resetting your iPhone;
"Reset the iPhone by holding the sleep/wake button at the top right of the device and the home button at the bottom center of the face at the same time. Hold them both until you see the screen go black and the white Apple logo appear. When this happens, you can let go - the iPhone is rebooting."

If this does not work we need to put the phone in DFU mode and restore it.

Connect your iPhone to your computer
If itunes detect your iPhone is good, if not;
While iPhone is connected to the computer, hold down the home and power button together for about 10 seconds, then release the power button while continuing to hold the home button. A few seconds later iTunes should detect your iPhone,
Select the "restore" option from "Summary" tab
Once the restore process has completed your iPhone will restart

Guys please help me on this. How to rest my iphone4.

Ravenii said...

Hi Anon, Hard to help without enough info. But if you still can booth the iPhone normally follow the resetting procedure above.
If it is bricked (stuck) you need to look for another solution.

I did reset on ‘Erase all settings, data on the iPhone 2G’. After that, No responding at all. Only apple logo appears, and nothing. I did hard reset, pressing and holding the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds several times. Still apple logo, no more responding… Any body helps me.

Hi Anon, depending on how much data in in your phone, it might be normal. I had mine with minimal data taking about 16 Hours.

Anonymous said...

i format my phone and i had waited for more than 8 hours. i try to connect to itunes but it doesn't help..so wt should i do now? just wait???

ravenII said...

Hi Anon, there were instances of iPhones taking even longer. It all depends on how much data is on your iPhone. I would give ample time even up to 24 hours in some cases.
