Why BlackBerry Is Better Than iPhone, Here are 26 Ways You Could Look At It.

BlackBerry Is Better Than iPhone
When die hard fans of iPhone stand by the product, even when Apple throws the halo into the dustbin and don the horns, might get a kick out of reading this article on Seeking Alpha, "Blackberry’s 26 Advantages over iPhone". I am not a die hard fan but I did get a kick out. There are 26 fantastic and not so fantastic advantages that BlackBerry has over iphone. I knew most of them because I own both and still when some one mentiones phone, I reach for my BlackBerry.
Anyway here are some of the reasons why BlackBerry is Better than iPhone according to the author Anton Wahlman, a link to the original after the jump;

1. Blackberry can be used on almost every carrier in the world (over 475 of them). In the US, the iPhone is available on AT&T (T) only.
.....
....
4. Blackberry uses standardized (=inexpensive and available everywhere in the world) MicroUSB connector for synchronization/charging. iPhone has a much larger proprietary 30-pin connector.
.....
....
.

12. Skype (EBAY) on the Blackberry? Yes, from anywhere to anywhere. Skype on iPhone? Only if you’re on WiFi.

13. Sling on the Blackberry? Yes, it’s free. Sling on iPhone? $30.

14. Google (GOOG) Voice on the Blackberry? Yes, it’s free. Google Voice on iPhone? Verboten.

And more at Seeking Alpha, thanks Anton

FreeSwitch 1.0.4 Available For Immediate Download

FreeSwitch 1.0.4
I have been playing around with FreeSWITCH for a long while but recently I gave up playing and implemented the system for a small research team, that other open source VoIP Systems could not easily serve. As well as for the research team that is spread over a few countries and time zones and me personally the mod_skypiax gave the final push to put the system into production. We actually started working with the sources for this project much earlier.

The team at freeswitch.org has officially released the FreeSwitch 1.0.4. With this release FreeSWITCH brings many improvements in stability and security and some additions like the mod_skypiax.
Here are some of the functions and additions that I found interesting;

mod_opal
OPAL is one of my favorite projects and have been a follower for a while. Now FreeSWITCH works together with Project Opal to create mod_opal, which adds H.323 functionality to FreeSWITCH as well as IAX2 support.

mod_skypiax
My favorite, mod_skypiax brings capability to send and receive Skype calls from FreeSWITCH to Skype network. The Skype module (mod_skypiax) uses the native Skype client for the target operating system. Currently, Windows and Linux are supported. FreeSWITCH's ability to transcode and resample other high quality codecs allows for high quality Skype calls coming over SILK codec to connect to SIP endpoints, be they free SIP clients or Commercial SIP Phones.
This capability will certainly promote the capability FreeSWITCH's capability as a telephony switch.

ZRTP SRTP
ZRTP will allow to encrypt calls between endpoints or systems. The ZRTP uses SRTP to accomplish the purpose and is co developed with Philip Zimmermann of PGP fame, which I have been using for ages. I have not tested this feature yet but looking forward to do so soon.

mod_unimrcp
MRCP, or Media Resource Control Protocol, is provided with this module. This module utilizes the well-written UniMRCP library, authored by Arsen Chaloyen. The module is compliant with MRCP version 2 (SIP). MRCP allows for media servers to be separated from FreeSWITCH. Good module for tasks such as IVR or Text to Speech etc.

NAT Traversal Made Easy
NAT-traversal is important for SIP calls and is made easier with the automatic NAT handling feature included with the FreeSWITCH. Routers, switches and firewalls that support either UPnP or NAT-PMP can be polled by devices inside the network, allowing them to determine the external IP address. You can give up fighting with STUN now!
mod_nibblebill
FreeSWITCH now supports real-time pre-paid billing applications with mod_nibblebill. The name of the module is telling: it monitors calls in progress and "nibbles" away at the available credit of a pre-paid user's account.
In addition to above, the FreeSWITCH has following features;

  • Runs on Win32/MAC/UNIX
  • IVR Application API
  • 8kHz/16kHz/32kHz/48kHz Audio
  • Soft Conferencing
  • SIP B2UA/SRTP/TLS
  • SIP BLF/SLA/PBX Features
  • Presence
  • GoogleTalk
  • IPv4/IPv6
  • ENUM/ISN
  • Async Audio
  • Event/Logger Engine
  • Real Time
  • zRTP (libzrtp)
Free yourself with FreeSWITCH

Digium Releases Skype for Asterisk Public Beta

Snap VoIP On Asterisk
After Private testing for a while Digium has released a "time-expiring" beta of Skype for Asterisk (SFA).
So if you are enthusiastic about Skype for Asterisk, better hurry to Digium online store and purchase the product for zero dollars. The software will stop working on August 31. The download is also currently time-limited - it will be available until August 7 on our website.
If you did not know what Skype For Asterisk (SFA) is, it is an add-on channel driver for Asterisk telephony solutions. By adding Skype for Asterisk channel driver to ANY Asterisk server will provide complete access to the Skype worldwide network and the services it offers, like low cost PSTN access and free calling to over 440+ million Skype users.

Please follow the guidelines regarding G.729 licences if you want to operate this channel, like with SkypeIn Number or also known as Skype Online number.

G.729 provides superior call quality and is very inexpensive to purchase from Digium. I have G.729 codec (software) on most of my Digium PSTN cards and I love it. But be for warned, my next purchase, after sfa, will most probably be a TC400B. The TC400B decompresses G.729a (8.0kbit) or G.723.1 (5.3kbit) into u-law or a-law; or, compresses u-law or a-law into G.729a (8.0kbit) or G.723.1 (5.3kbit). The TC400B is rated to handle up to 120 bi-directional G.729a transformations or 92 bi-directional G.723.1 transformations. The TC400B does not require additional licensing fees for the use of these codecs nor does it require the registration process associated with Digium's software-based G.729a codec licensing. Makes my life a bit easier!.

Asterisk Skype Gateway!

http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
Time to time I get dragged in by Nerd Vittles doings with VoIP and usually Asterisk. There is a talk about Digium doing an Asterisk-Skype Gateway but Nerds have none of that and gone their own way to implement a Skype Gateway.
To the less technically inclined and mostly less time and resources to manage such gateways, NV suggest using Gizmo5 solution that they came up a time ago. But those who really like to see the rivets, bolts and not to forget the nuts, they have another suggestion. They guide you to Greg Dorfuss' SipToSis software which is the basis of Gizmo's offering. The complete instructions of installing and setting up the gateway for Asterisk and FreePBX is there. So go get your Skype via Asterisk.
The Nerd Vittles.
