According to a report by Canalys, a research firm worldwide smartphone market grew in Q3 2010 by 95% over the same quarter a year ago. The total number of smartphones shipped reached 80.9 million units (of that 20.9 million units were shipped in the USA). Smart phone market share is a very interesting piece of data to investigate and share. Last May the data were much different;

BlackBerry leads the pack with 36% of market share of  smartphones with Android following closely with 28% and iPhone chugging along at 21% for the 2010 sales.

In the beginning of this month we saw the change in Smart Phone Market. Rise of the Android was already happening.

The worldwide smart phone market share is still being led by Nokia at 33% of the market (The margin has been dropping for a while now) and APPLE (17%) jumped ahead of RIM (15%).  The report did not say who owns the balance 35% of the world wide smart phone market share but I think majority must be held by OHA, the Android group.
The world largest smart phone market, USA has some interesting data to share. In US, Apple toppled RIM from the top spot with 26.2% and RIM had 24.2%. Even though RIM introduced the new Torch, it had only half a quarter on the shelves. It will be interesting to see what happens at the end of the fourth quarter.
With all these companies fighting for the top spot, Smart phones based on Android is over taking them all. In the US, OHA, (Open Hand Set Alliance) cornered a hefty 43.6%. A share, very difficult to steal from. I am sure forth quarter with 4G playing in the wireless air waves, Android will continue to grow.

Fix Droid Password Lockup, After Failing Too Many Pattern Attempts

Many people have reported locked up Droids not accepting Google credentials after failing too many pattern attempts. Apparently the bug has existed for a while from the entries on Android - An Open Handset Alliance Project forum.
But as always,enterprising users have found many shortcuts to overcome problem of locking up Androids, Following is the best that seem to work and offered in many variations;

1) create a new gmail account on the computer.
2) call your cell phone with a different phone. 
3) answer your cell phone then hit the back button and it will take you to the home
screen.
4) turn on wifi so it can do data and voice at the same time (remember that the phone
is still connected)
5) go to Settings -> Location & Security and disable lock pattern (you'll need to
enter to correct pattern previously set)
6) go to Settings -> Accounts & Sync and click "Add Account" and add your newly
created Gmail account.
7) hang up the phone. 
8) turn the phone back on, at the lockout screen, enter your new Gmail account info
and it should let you back in 
9) once the phone is unlocked, you can go in setting and remove the newly added Gmail
account and keep the old one.

Android Developers Challenge I Winners!

As we have written a lot about the Android, the open handset alliance project (we are fans! our Google phone coming soon was a DIGG item.), we could not miss writing about developer challenge one, as well. But those lucky winners who got six figure prize money had to be little more than lucky. There were many competitors, each with brilliant ideas and tough judges, seven of them.
According to the Android blog, each judge reviewed all 50 selected Android Challenge applications collaboratively and gave initial scores. Then all judges met together to debate and support their ideas and scoring over conference calls. And that is how these judges came to consensus on which applications should receive $275,000 and which should receive $100,000.
And the winners are,
Ten $275,000 winners, from Cab4me to wertego and another ten, Breadcrumbz to Teradesk, $100,000 winners.
We don't really agree with Android judges (somebody even said lets get what they were smoking!, so we can judge ourselves), we respect their choices. We are good football (soccer) players we always respect the referee!.
But instead of listening to these personal ideas, you can visit the ADC gallery of winners and finalists. I think you will see why it is so hard to choose, they are all good ideas.
