New worm in Skype Chat!

VoIP IP Telephony @ http://snapvoip.blogspot.com

On May 24, Chris Boyd, a researcher at FaceTime Communications -- which established a partnership to provide security applications to Skype in Feb. 2007 -- noticed a new variant of the so-called Skype worm that has been spreading through the VOIP client's messaging system for the last several months.

Unlike previous versions of the threat that merely passed themselves along to other Skype users via their contact lists, the new variant will also "jump" to other more established networks, including the ICQ and MSN messenger platforms.

The development illustrates not only that attacks aimed at users of VOIP networks are escalating and becoming more sophisticated, but also that they are being pulled into use by the smartest and most aggressive cyber-criminals looking for new revenue streams, Boyd said.

In late March 2007, researchers at F-Secure first unearthed a Skype worm variant that attempted to trick users into visiting a Web site that downloaded a malware program which was designed to communicate to hackers over a Yahoo mail server to confirm its infection and load additional programs onto affected PCs.

Variants of the attack, which subsequently tried to infect users with keystroke logging software and other data-thieving programs, have continued to appear since that time.

Tony Magellanez, a systems engineer at Helsinki, Finland-based F-Secure, said that such a move by hackers to port their IM-based threats to VOIP software should come as no surprise.

"Chat has obviously been around forever, and the ability to share information via these tools has opened it up to the types of attacks we're seeing," Magellanez said. "The attacks aren't being made against any vulnerability in the software but instead against the social aspects of its use that make it an attractive target."

The researcher said, in fact, that the Skype application in particular has exhibited a small number of vulnerabilities and proven fairly resistant to malware threats, a performance he attributes to significant work on the part of the company to engineer the system with security in mind.

Jajah get the T-mobile deal

VoIP IP Telephony @ http://snapvoip.blogspot.com
JAJAH has signed a deal that puts it ahead of the other similar VoIP providers. They’ve secured investment from T-Mobile owner Deutsche Telecom to put their VoIP system at the heart of new handsets.
This is a major move for Jajah as Skype, Googletalk, YahooIM all are vying for a space in the mobile VoIP world.
While other Cellular provider have taken VoIP capabilities from their smart phones, T-Mobile have embrased the idea. This will push the position of T-Mobile in the mobile race!
T-Mobile’s already in the process of embedding JAJAH into its web products and we’d guess its mobiles will be next.

"The importance of these investments will be realized as new devices and service emerge” says JAJAH cofounder, Daniel Mattes.

T-Mobile already have uncapped data tariffs in the shape of Web’n’Walk. Add JAJAH to the mix and it’s a serious contender for your next contract renewal.

Skype will CO-Brand VoSKY, Skype to PBX gateway for businesses

VoIP IP Telephony @ http://snapvoip.blogspot.com
Skype and VoSKY Technologies today announced co-branded versions of VoSKY Exchange, a rackmountable PBX-to-Skype gateway that enables business users to make and receive Internet-based Skype calls over standard office phones. The co-branded Skype VoSKY Exchange 9040 and 9140 products are available in the UK and Rep. of Ireland.

"This agreement is an important step in the expansion of our Skype for Business Portfolio," said Alberto Lorente, Skype's business development director for Europe "The ability to offer Skype trunking through the company PBX is critical for business use, and VoSKY Exchange offers an inexpensive plug-and-play solution that integrates seamlessly with the office phone system, allowing companies to make, receive and transfer Skype calls, while also making it easy for companies to deploy Skype to end users and track Skype-related spending."

Both models of Skype VoSKY Exchange add four Skype lines to the office PBX without requiring changes to the existing PBX or desk phone infrastructure. Multiple Exchange boxes can be set up in different company offices anywhere in the world for free calling between sites. Calls to other Skype users are also free, while calls to non-Skype users are typically charged at SkypeOut global rates. Full SkypeOut global rates are available at www.skype.com/intl/en/products/skypeout/rates/

The 9040 model offers trunk-side (FXO) connectivity to the PBX. The 9140 model connects on the extension-side (FXS) and adds the ability to transfer Skype calls between offices by extension without dialing the full office number.

"Skype's decision to co-brand our VoSKY Exchange product reflects the demand for Skype enablers in the business community," said Dean Chang, President and CEO of VoSKY Technologies. "Companies around the world have deployed our solution to take full advantage of Skype's offering, and we expect this agreement to accelerate market penetration in the UK both by adding the Skype brand and increasing our visibility in Skype's online business portal."

Skype VoSKY Exchange supports virtually all PBX systems out of the box and has no operating cost except for SkypeOut charges. It can be installed in as little as two hours, has received Skype certification, and has a low one-time cost that typically pays for itself within four months through Skype savings on long-distance and international phone calls.

Bringo to brings sanity to Phone trees

VoIP IP Telephony @ http://snapvoip.blogspot.com
If you have tried to call a corporate number, like I did last week, try to call support line of a well known Company HP to get support for a very expensive storage product, only brought my rage out, until a colleague of mine told me to keep on hitting "0" (ZERO), until it put you in touch with a human being. But by the time you have lost your mind as well as forgotten why you are calling this mindless corporate phone tree.

Anyway a post on techcrunch tells me that I could use Bringo or Nophonetrees.com instead. What ever the way you have tried to traverse the phone trees, is a bit of a past ritual now.
"You don’t even need to dial your phone. Just find the company you want to talk to in their directory, type in your phone number, and a couple of minutes later Bringo calls you and connects you to an operator at that company. I tried it with Air Canada and it worked absolutely perfectly."

Billion routers to distributed by VCOMM

VoIP IP Telephony @ http://snapvoip.blogspot.com via eMediawire.
VCOMM UK Limited commences distribution of products developed by VoIP specialist router vendor Billion. Billion manufactures a broad range of ADSL routers - ideal for the home, SOHO and SMB sectors - which include the ability to provide failover to the PSTN in the event of Broadband and/or power failure.

VCOMM is a trade only value added distributor that provides IP Telephony products and services to the UK and Irish channel.

With the recent Ofcom directive stating that all VoIP resellers should provide some sort of access to 999 Emergency Services, even in the event of service failure - Billion's VoIP routers not only provides this, but delivers a cost effective, highly flexible solution.
Scott Dobson, Managing Director of VCOMM, states: "With the recent Ofcom directive stating that all VoIP resellers should provide some sort of access to 999 Emergency Services, even in the event of service failure - Billion's VoIP routers not only provides this, but delivers a cost effective, highly flexible solution."

Julian De Selincourt, Billion's Sales and Marketing Director added: "We're delighted to have signed VCOMM as a strategic partner as they are so focused on, and well respected within, the VoIP sector. This alliance provides a great margin opportunity for resellers selling into the home, SOHO and SMB sector.

"We are the only manufacturer to supply the failover 'lifeline' feature as standard in our BiPAC routers - a great safety feature that offers extra peace of mind for users."

VCOMM will be supplying the following Billion VOIP router models: BiPAC 7401VP, BiPAC 7401VGP, BiPAC 7404VGP and BiPAC 7404VGO.

In addition to the failover lifeline, another unique feature from Billion is Quality of Service (QoS). This helps users manage the bandwidth and prioritise the traffic of data effectively. It gives users full control over the traffic of any type of data. It ensures latency-sensitive and bandwidth-consuming applications like P2P sharing programs, VoIP calls, gaming packets or customer information can move through the router at lightning speed, even under heavy load.

OpenSER VS SER, running on a $3,000 Lintel server, both manage 8 billion minutes of VoIP traffic per year.

VoIP IP Telephony @ http://snapvoip.blogspot.com via eMediawire.
Two competing open source projects have now been compared in a side by side test. SIP Express Router, also known as SER (www.iptel.org), is the respected pioneer of open source SIP proxies. SER has been available since November 2003 and has a reputation for high performance and reliability. The upstart, OpenSER (www.openser.org) was created when developers disappointed by SER's slow release schedule, forked a version of SER to create OpenSER in June 2005.
Ever since, SIP proxy users have been faced with the question, which project is best?

TransNexus, an independent developer of VoIP Operations and Billing Support System (OSS/BSS) software decided to answer this question for its customers once and for all. Most product benchmark test plans are designed to yield incredible results for marketing promotion. The TransNexus benchmark plan was different. It was designed to mimic a production network with a lot of failed call attempts and the added overhead of call detail record collection.

As expected, the TransNexus results were not as amazing as some of the other published test results, but they were realistic and still very impressive. Telecom equipment vendors need to beware, both SER and OpenSER are ready to scale for the largest wholesale carrier operations. To summarize the results, TransNexus found that either OpenSER or SER SIP proxies have the performance to manage 720 calls per second on a $3,000 Linux server with dual Intel Xeon CPUs. For a typical wholesale carrier operation, this performance is sufficient to manage over 700 million minutes of traffic each month! While OpenSER and SER are competing against each other, they are rapidly out running the cost/benefit performance offered by commercial telecom equipment vendors.

Here is What Transnexus had to say;

Performance Results for OpenSER and SIP Express Router

We often hear the questions:

  • How fast are OpenSER or SER in a real world environment?

  • How do SER and OpenSER compare?

We decided to answer these questions and created a detailed performance test for OpenSER and SIP Express Router. To simulate a production environment, the SIP proxy under test queries an external OSP server for routing information on each and call and then reports call detail records to an external OSP server. Five destinations are returned to the SIP proxy for each call in random order. Four of the five destinations simulate call failure scenarios so the SIP proxy must retry the call an average of two times before the call is completed. These tests were performed on a single core of an Intel Xeon 5140 2.33 GHz CPU.

Here is a brief summary of what transnexus learned. For all the test details, click here.

  • The performance of OpenSER V1.2 and SER 2.0 are not materially different, however, there are two minor differences.
    • SER V2.0 requires less memory.
    • OpenSER V1.2 has less post dial delay.
  • By all measures, OpenSER V1.2 is significantly better than OpenSER V1.1.

  • For production operation (with call retries and CDR reporting), we suggest the following simple guideline for sizing server hardware to operate at 60% CPU utilization for OpenSER V1.2 and SER V2.0:

One GHz of CPU processing capacity can manage 60 calls per second.

For example, a server with two, dual core, 3.0 GHz CPUs would effectively have (2 CPUs * 2 cores * 3 GHz per CPU) twelve GHz of CPU processing capacity. This server, hosting either OpenSER V1.2 or SER 2.0, would be able to manage 720 calls per second at approximately 60% CPU utilization.

CPU Utilization

The following chart plots CPU utilization as a function of calls per second. The results for OpenSER V1.2 and SER 2.0 are identical. The performance of OpenSER V1.2 is 13% better than OpenSER V1.1.

Memory Usage

Memory is not a major resource requirement, even at high loads. SER 2.0 has the lowest memory requirement.

Post Dial Delay

The data on the following chart is an indirect indication of Post Dial Delay (PDD). The data presented is the percentage of calls in each test that experienced a PDD greater than six seconds.

Call Completion

The following chart presents the percentage of calls which were not completed successfully for each test. When CPU utilization was less 90%, both OpenSER V1.2 and SER 2.0 completed all calls successfully.

Asterisk and Open Telephony Conference

VoIP IP Telephony @ http://snapvoip.blogspot.com
What can I say about this statement by Sean Michael Kerner, "The Future of Open Source VoIP is Asterisk 1.6"
I do not think that the whole future of VoIP lies on Asterisk. But a part of it will be. Asterisk has already made a big stir in the world of VoIP and IPPBX's. Specially the SMB's and even individual house holds use Asterisk for their telephony uses. I have total of four Asterisk servers running at any time. One is in my office which is actually my secretary! One at my Campus office, one at my home and the fourth for my development and experiments. This in addition to evangelical work I have done and promoted small business to use it.
I usually try to educate users to manage their own Asterisk servers rather than relying on me. I introduce them to all the online support tools and people who really need hand holding I direct them to Digium's commercial support. But most of them realize that Asterisk is not rocket science. People who were afraid of Linux, smile once they see how easy it is to manage the Asterisk server running on Linux. That is mostly
AsteriskNOW.org and AsteriskNow. But all I can say is, with proper care and attension, Aterisk will grow in you while, at the same time being there when ever you need it.

Now back to the article,
The following staments; "

As part of the development process, Asterisk developers have overhauled how they deal with security issues. Fleming boasted that security issues are handled by a core team that address issues 24 to 48 hours from the initial report.

There is also now a formal Asterisk Project Security Advisory reporting system that will provide full disclosure into reported issues and what Asterisk is doing to fix issues.

Fleming admitted that Asterisk hasn't done a great job of making users aware of security advisories, but the new effort is an attempt to do better.

"One of the benefits of open source is that there are more people using our code and a lot more people looking at our code and telling us when things are wrong," Fleming said.

"No one gets to look at the code for Nortel's systems and there are probably just as many vulnerabilities there but you only hear about it when it gets exploited.""

There it summarizes all I wants, Security! Right Now first thing I advise to install together with Asterisk is a firewall. But still we have had issues with security.

Thank Sean, for making me think! I think Asterisk has a great future. We need to scale it higher.

As choosing VoIP services and installing and maintaining an Internet Protocol (IP)-based communications network can be a confusing and time-consuming endeavor. To help give SMBs a leg up, VoIP telephony solutions provider Allworx created a whitepaper that serves as a tutorial for deploying and maintaining digital phones on a VoIP network.

The whitepaper’s author is Jeffrey Szczepanski, Chief Technical Officer at InSciTek Microsystems, Inc., Allworx’s parent company. Szczepanski wrote the paper specifically for administrators, installers and network planners. Here, TMCnet provides an overview.

Straws are adding on Skype camels back or am I wrong about the new multi player gaming channel to be added on to skype.
According to the news I read, he channel will be developed by Norwegian firm Easybits and gamers will be able to invite their friends and engage them in multiplayer games.
Announcing the launch of the channel at TMC' developer confernce, Skype director Paul Amery said, "People are increasingly using Skype to interact with one another, with many choosing to play simple games like checkers or backgammon. However, the tremendous size of Skype's user-base makes it an ideal environment for multi-player and community-based games in which people can play against or collaborate with one another."
Game Channel developers portal is at http://skype.easybits.com and it will answer most of developer questions, including the technical ones, as well as help developers figure out if your games are a good fit for this medium. It is also the place for the latest news and updates.

SMB Hosted VoIP Phone Service is lead by packet8 virtual office

VoIP IP Telephony @ http://snapvoip.blogspot.com
According to a research report released by AMI Partners (http://www.ami-partners.com/) ranked its Packet8 Virtual Office service as the #1 hosted VoIP phone system choice by U.S. based small and medium sized businesses.
"AMI Partners' recent VoIP report is a very insightful and comprehensive study of the rapidly growing market for hosted VoIP business phone services," said 8x8 Vice President of Marketing & Sales Huw Rees. "We are very pleased that our Virtual Office solution, which is based on 8x8's own technology, was one of the first hosted PBX solutions to be deployed worldwide and that it has gained significant market acceptance with more than 7,000 businesses now using the service."
Offering a combination of unlimited local and long distance calling in the United States and Canada plus advanced PBX features for just $49.99 per month/extension, the Packet8 Virtual Office solution is currently being used by more than 7,000 U.S. business organizations. Virtual Office enables small and medium sized enterprises to secure distributed corporate class telecommunications capabilities for a fraction of the cost of wireline business services from traditional phone companies. Unlike comparably priced single line VoIP phone services which offer features more suited to individual residential users, Packet8 Virtual Office provides companies with complete business phone system functionality along with the flexibility to operate each extension from any geographically dispersed location with high-speed Internet access.

The Packet8 Virtual Office service includes an auto attendant, worldwide extension dialing, business class voicemail, a full featured conference bridge and ring groups, in addition to a rich variety of other business class PBX and dial tone features not normally found on premise-based PBX systems. Packet8 Virtual Office reduces an organization's total cost of ownership for telecommunications services because of its minimal initial investment combined with unlimited worldwide calling to other business extensions and Packet8 subscribers, unlimited local and long distance business calling in the United States and Canada and access to Packet8's low per-minute international calling rates to overseas wireline and mobile phone numbers.

I the future, all the invites will pertain to particular offering only i.e all the old requests will not count towards an invite. If you want a joost invite, you will have to request again. Enjoy Joosting.

JAJAH goes Gaming, on PS3

I read at JAJAH blog that it has enterd into a new territory with it's VOIP software.
"Several weeks ago, we showed the world it was possible to make a regular JAJAH call directly from a Sony PSP. It got so much attention that we went to work on optimizing the experience and on bringing the solution to other consoles. Today we bring you a new version of JAJAH, designed to shine brightly on one of the most popular game consoles of our time, the Sony Playstation 3."

"JAJAH's vision is to bring free and ultra low cost calls to people everywhere," said Roman Scharf, JAJAH co-founder. "Introducing JAJAH to gamers is another way of bringing that vision to life."

JAJAH, the innovative web-based calling company, has brought its solution to the Sony Computer Entertainment PlayStation 3 system, allowing gamers to initiate free or ultra-low cost global phone calls directly from their game console. I think it is a whole new way for VOIP company to take.
Now where is this WII?
