No 5G iPhones until 2020, Apple Insiders.

Apple has traditionally waited out for new network technology to iron out the bugs before committing iPhones to those networks. It is believed that Apple plans to delay the 5G iPhones at least until 2020. So the Apple fandom may have to wait until then to ride the next generation of high-speed phone services coming next year. As with 3G and 4G, Apple will wait as long as a year after the initial deployment of the 5G high speed networks before its iPhone gets the 5G capability according to the insiders, who requested not to be identified.
But the 5G enablers are arguing that the switch is a much bigger speed upgrade. The networks will open the floodgates to new types of mobile computing. Making it much riskier than previous instances for Apple.








The pause, if turns out to be true, will give a jump start to Apple competitors, Android phone makers, like Samsung, Huawei and any other who will provide #5Gphones.
The delay may make it easier for rivals like Samsung Electronics Co. to win over consumers to phones that connect to 5G networks, which will provide a leap forward in mobile data speeds when they are introduced in 2019.

Even if Apple understands the risk, the decision might have been due to the Apple <> Qualcomm saga. Qualcomm Inc., is the leader in 5G-enabled chips, while the Intel Corp., Apple's chip provider. Intel will not have 5G compatible chips available in time to support 2019 phones.

Nvidia and Intel has settled all their litigation filled hate relationship and turned it into a love and hopefully will make our lives, mobile and other, better.  The agreement centers on a new six-year cross-licensing deal that will see Intel paying NVIDIA a total of $1.5b over the next five years for access to NVIDIA’s technology, while also giving NVIDIA a license to some of Intel’s patents.

New Six-Year Cross-License Renews Previous Agreement

SANTA CLARA, CA--(Marketwire - January 10, 2011) - NVIDIA announced today that it has signed a new six-year cross-licensing agreement with Intel.

For the future use of NVIDIA's technology, Intel will pay NVIDIA an aggregate of $1.5 billion in licensing fees payable in five annual installments, beginning Jan. 18, 2011.

NVIDIA and Intel have also agreed to drop all outstanding legal disputes between them.

"This agreement signals a new era for NVIDIA," said Jen-Hsun Huang, NVIDIA's president and chief executive officer. "Our cross license with Intel reflects the substantial value of our visual and parallel computing technologies. It also underscores the importance of our inventions to the future of personal computing, as well as the expanding markets for mobile and cloud computing."

Under the new agreement, Intel will have continued access to NVIDIA's full range of patents. In return, NVIDIA will receive an aggregate of $1.5 billion in licensing fees, to be paid in annual installments, and retain use of Intel's patents, consistent with its existing six-year agreement with Intel. This excludes Intel's proprietary processors, flash memory and certain chipsets for the Intel platform.

The existing agreement is to expire March 31, 2011.

Pursuant to U.S. GAAP, a portion of the proceeds will be accounted for and attributed to the settlement of prior legal claims. This amount, which NVIDIA anticipates to be less than $100 million, will be included in the company's fourth-quarter results.

The balance of the licensing fees will be accounted for on a straight-line basis over the six-year term of the agreement. Accordingly it is anticipated that this would amount annually to approximately $233 million of operating income and an increase in net income of $0.29 per diluted share, on a full year basis.

The HDCP master key that leaked on Tuesday is the big one, INTEL has confirmed. The key was posted on the internet on postbin site. HDCP was concocted to protect high-definition movies stored on Blu-ray and other devices. Even Adobe enabled HDCP encryption.
HDCP typically protects movies as they pass through DVI or HDMI ports on devices and now MPAA standing in the middle of the road with no clothes on! Stupid business planes by stupid people, tend to break!
HDCP was created by Intel and is administered by Digital Content Protection LLP. INTEL and DCP LLP wins with money in the pocket, MPAA loses!
Intel spokesman Tom Waldrop said "We have tested this published material that was on the Web," Waldrop said. "It does produce product keys... the net of that means that it is a circumvention of the code."
The leaked key on the site that lists the code comes with instructions;

"This is a forty times forty element matrix of fifty-six bit hexadecimal numbers, To generate a source key, take a forty-bit number that (in binary) consists of twenty ones and twenty zeroes; this is the source KSV, Add together those twenty rows of the matrix that correspond to the ones in the KSV (with the lowest bit in the KSV corresponding to the first row), taking all elements modulo two to the power of fifty-six; this is the source private key.

Ofono.org Joint Effort By INTEL AND Nokia, For Open Source Mobile Telephony

Ofono published the announcement below, on their site leading me to think, that this is a space to watch. The support and the aims of the project points high and this will really be a success for the open source telephony supporters.

Intel and Nokia are pleased to jointly announce the oFono project, an open source project for developing an open source telephony solution.

oFono.org is a place to bring developers together around designing an infrastructure for building mobile telephony (GSM/UMTS) applications.

Review the source code for an even closer look.

"oFono is licensed under GPLv2, and it includes a high-level D-Bus API for use by telephony applications of any license. oFono also includes a low-level plug-in API for integrating with Open Source as well as third party telephony stacks, cellular modems and storage back-ends. The plug-in API functionality is modeled on public standards, in particular 3GPP TS 27.007 “AT command set for User Equipment (UE).”

Nokia and Intel will jointly maintain the oFono project. We'd like to invite all developers to join the ofono.org effort and community.

Cloud Computing For Mobile Phones

With mobile phones providing more and more capabilities for us not to be tied to a desk, the shear amount of data that is processed by the Mobile devices tend to affect the battery life and send us back to the desk much earlier than we wanted to.
If we could use our mobile phones as a terminal to a much more powerful computer on the net will reduce the power requirements on the phone and at the same time provide much better processing power. Just like the old days with main frames and dumb terminals, transformed to today with cloud computing and intelligent terminals. But where and how do we do that? The answer comes from two Intel Research Berkeley scientists Byung-Gon Chun and Petros Maniatis. They have been working on a project called CloneCloud, which is a cloud computing service that provide external processing power to mobile phones.
With high speed connections available for mobile communication, handing over of a phones processing to a more powerful clone in the cloud might save a lot of processing power on the phone allowing the battery to last much longer.
At the same time the clone will be able to extend the processing power of the phone. For an example, the researcher Chun created a facial recognition application. The application required 100 seconds to run on the phone, while the same task took just one second once offloaded to the cloud.
But it is not all rosy with clonecloud and there are many hurdles to overcome. Network latency and bandwidth limitations will affect the operations and as I mentioned, it will be not much more than a dumb terminal once in an area where there is no connectivity. But then again in a dead zone you will be doing very little work.
