Cisco WebEx Meeting Center App, WebEx On iPhone Is Magic

I am sure you have used webex at least once in a while to attend an online meeting. I have conducted an entire class over webex and that was in a totaly alien language to most of you. But the importance is that I can work meet and convers as long as I am near a computer. I have even joined a meeting over a WIFi link from under a tree on the campus. The other attendees were wondering where the bird twittering was coming from.
But now you can attend a meeting from anywhere it seems as Cisco has released WebEx for iPhone! I have a quite a few applications that run on the iPhone and I am even managing a few server via iPhone with Logmein's ignition, which by the way I use on my computers as well. But having WebEx on iPhone makes life much different!

The Cisco WebEx Meeting CenterApp (iTunes App Store link) is free and is almost same as the web-based version. Meeting attendees can simply access the WebEx via an iPhone join link in the meeting invitation.
Following are high lights and features from Cisco press release;

• Out of the office or on the move no longer means out of the loop. Cisco is extending its web conferencing and collaboration capabilities to the Apple iPhone 3G user experience, with Cisco WebEx Meeting Center and Cisco Unified MeetingPlace.
• The new Cisco WebEx meetings iPhone application, which is available for free download from the AppStore, allows users to simply click to join and actively collaborate in CiscoWebEx meetings. With Cisco WebEx Meeting Center application on the iPhone, users can view what's being shared, see the meeting participant list, see the active speaker and chat with other meeting participants.
• The online meeting experience gives users the ability to take advantage of simultaneous web and audio conferencing capabilities from Cisco on both the 3G mobile and 802.11 wireless (Wi-Fi) networks. The solution supports multiple telephony configurations including SaaS-based telephony from Cisco WebEx Meeting Center, premises-based telephony from Cisco Unified MeetingPlace, or telephony from Cisco's service provider partners. The download is free from the AppStore. Users need to have current subscriptions to the WebEx services to schedule or host a meeting.
• A future version of the solution will include Cisco WebEx Meeting Center as well as the ability to see meeting participants and the active speaker from Cisco Unified MeetingPlace. Users will be able to move in-session Cisco WebEx Meeting Center and Cisco Unified MeetingPlace conferences from the Apple iPhone 3G to an office environment and back, by transferring the audio to a Cisco Unified IP Phone and the web conference to a computer for a rich collaboration experience."

DimDim Sheds Beta Tag And Gives Free Conferencing!

Actually they have been live for some time now but DimDim web conferencing solution has removed the beta tag, and revealed it's source code to millions of open source developers in the world at the same time. I have followed DimDim from it's early days at Sourceforge.
Unlike DimDim's competitors, it does not require you to install any software on your desktop. The only tools are your existing browser and an INTERNET connection.
The current version, DimDim 4.5 utilizes SynchroLive feature to assure all the conference members are kept in sync. Another attractive feature is the shared browsing assisted by SynchroLive as well. This allows one to share his or her web browsing with conference members. This shared browsing extends to videos as well.
If you are developer, or high tech geek, you can also get the community edition witch is released under GPL. Dimdim Open Source Community Edition v4.5 “Liberty” is meant for use in non-critical environments. It has the most of the features of Dimdim Enterprise and is based on open source streaming and media components. Dimdim Enterprise is based on commercial streaming and media components (Adobe Flash Server) and runs on top of our SynchroLive Communication Platform to ensure robust scalability and reliability and is fully supported and certified by Dimdim, Inc. The Open source community supports the Open Source Community Edition.
But DimDim offers free accounts that could host up to 20 users at time and if you desire more, the unlimited version is offered at $99 per year.

Jabbering At Cisco! Might Make Us Do Awya With Wispering.

The small company that I work for and part own, uses Cisco gear in every corner and nook. Close to us and in far away lands. And I am sure there got to be more in between.

In front of these myriad networks, we also develop products for prestigious companies. Companies that take most part of your earnings!. Basically we have to convince clients that our products could provide what they require to operate smoothly and more. These clients, they are all over the nation. Some of these, we visit and provide face to face demos. The others we hold teleconferences and provide online demos, using WebEx from, again Cisco. Once we have convinced our clients, we get to setup the products to fit their needs as every one differs in their own way. So we got on with our developers, who expands a few continents. Again it is phones (Asterisk IPPBX) and WebEx. So when we heard that Cisco is definitely going to acquire Jabber, we knew we do not need to whisper, anymore. The other thing is that we have been happily Jabbering on Asterisk with chan_mobile for a while!, ourselves. Our original Jabber server still alive on a Pentium III machine!

So Cisco, we are ready!. Following is the Cisco press release regarding the Jabber acquisition;

SAN JOSE, Calif. - Sept. 19, 2008 - Cisco today announced its intent to acquire privately held Jabber, Inc., a provider of presence and messaging software. Based in Denver, Jabber will work with Cisco to enhance the existing presence and messaging functions of Cisco's Collaboration portfolio.

The acquisition will enable Cisco to embed presence and messaging services "in the network" and provide rich aggregation capabilities to users through both on-premise and on-demand solutions, across multiple platforms including Cisco WebEx® Connect and Cisco Unified Communications.

"Enterprise organizations want an extensible presence and messaging platform that can integrate with business process applications and easily adapt to their changing needs," said Doug Dennerline, Cisco senior vice president, Collaboration Software Group. "With the acquisition of Jabber, we will be able to extend the reach of our current instant messaging service and expand the capabilities of our collaboration platform. Our intention is to be the interoperability benchmark in the collaboration space."

Jabber provides a carrier-grade, best-in-class presence and messaging platform. Jabber's technology leverages open standards to provide a highly scalable architecture that supports the aggregation of presence information across different devices, users and applications. The technology also enables collaboration across many different presence systems such as Microsoft Office Communications Server, IBM Sametime, AOL AIM, Google and Yahoo!. Jabber's platform leads the market in system robustness, scalability, extensibility and global distribution.

The Jabber acquisition exemplifies Cisco's "build, buy and partner" innovation strategy to move quickly into new markets and capture key market transitions. In addition to internal software innovations, Cisco actively employs investments in, and acquisitions of, other companies to support its software strategy; recent purchases include industry leaders WebEx, IronPort, Securent and PostPath.

The transaction will be accounted for in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles. Financial terms of the transaction are undisclosed. The acquisition is subject to various standard closing conditions and is expected to be complete in Cisco's first half of fiscal year 2009. Upon completion of the acquisition, Jabber employees will become part of the Cisco Collaboration Software Group (CSG). CSG is part of the recently established Software Group, consisting of Cisco's major software businesses; including the IOS network operating system, network and service management, Unified Communications solutions, policy management, and SaaS offerings.
