President Trump will sign an executive order paving way for banning U.S. telecoms from using Huawei equipment and from others deem a risk to security.

Looks like, President Trump will ban U.S. wireless carriers from using telecom equipment and network related products from companies that could be a national security risk, Reuters reported.

The EO, the Executive Order will be signed by president invoking the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, which gives the president the ability to regulate aspects of commerce that may pose a security risk to the U.S.

The ban does not specifically name any telecom manufacturers, but the U.S. Department of Commerce will be held responsible for drafting enforcement rules for it. There we might find the parameters under which a company can be deemed to pose a national security risk.

Already, telecom manufacturers Huawei and ZTE are under pressure and the EO this week barring U.S. companies from using telecommunications equipment made by firms posing a national security risk, paving the way for a ban on doing business with China’s Huawei, nationwide, three U.S. officials familiar with the plan told Reuters.

The dispute began in 2012, under the Obama administration, when a Congressional report raised security concerns about the company’s networking equipment. The report detailed that Huawei and ZTE both failed to cooperate with investigators compiling the report, concluding that “Huawei and ZTE cannot be trusted to be free of foreign state influence and thus pose a security threat to the United States and to our systems.”

Federal Communications Commission chairman Ajit Pai said last week he was waiting for the Commerce Department to express views on how to “define the list of companies” that would be prohibited under the FCC proposal. Yesterday, the FCC voted unanimously to deny China Mobile Ltd’s bid to provide U.S. telecommunications services last week and said it was reviewing similar prior approvals held by China Unicom and China Telecom Corp.
