Ooma Office With A Slew Of New Advanced Features,Provides Corporate Level Communications for Small Businesses

The world of Voice over IP (VoIP) is a field a bit difficult to comprehend as it varied and enormous as the telecommunication field. Recently PCMag readers selected big and small companies alike in a rating their favorite VoIP solutions for work. They gave Ooma top marks, even though the scores were lower than previous years. Yet in their survey to select VoIP phone system for business, Ooma prevailed, beating out 12 other competitors, some being industry giants. Ooma received an almost astronomically high likelihood to recommend score of 8.9.
Perhaps to catch up with the other 1.1, Ooma recently revamped it's business services providing new advanced features for Ooma Office, giving small offices holding as low as 2 people the capabilities of large corporations. These are in addition to the already existing in Ooma Office;
 Simple to buy, set up and manage, Ooma Office delivers professional-grade features such as a virtual receptionist, a conference bridge, music on hold, ring groups and a mobile app.
The new advanced features are:
  • Call Blocking – To fight the scourge of unwanted calls, Ooma Office now provides account-level blacklisting, where individual phone numbers can be blocked from calling a company’s main number or any extensions. There’s also now the option to turn on Anonymous Call Rejection (ACR), which blocks any incoming call that doesn’t include Caller ID information.

  • Multi-level Virtual Receptionist – Administrators can now create multi-level virtual receptionists, for more accurate call routing. For example, the top-level greeting could say, “Welcome to Acme Industries. Press 1 for sales or press 2 for service.” When the customer selects service, the second-level greeting could say, “Press 1 for widget service or press 2 for gizmo service.”

  • Call Park – Instead of losing callers to voice mail during busy moments, the Call Park feature allows up to five simultaneous phone calls to be “parked” on hold and then picked up by any available extension.
  • Ring Groups Identification – Ring groups allow an incoming call to ring the phones of multiple users, such as all employees in sales or all employees in customer service. Ooma Office customers can now configure ring groups to show the name of the ring group in the caller ID displayed on the phone, so users know how to answer a call.
  • Extension Monitoring – A receptionist or office administrator can manage calls for multiple users with the Yealink T27G receptionist phone and optional Yealink EXP20 expansion module, knowing when lines are free (green light) or on a call (red light). Calls can also be easily transferred at the touch of a button.

  • Intercom – From any Ooma Office IP phone, users can now make announcements that are played through the speaker on the recipient’s phone, such as, “Joe, are you available to take a call now?”

For six years now, Ooma is the VoIP service PCMag readers believe is the very best. It tops almost every metric we measure, making this cloud-based PBX service the clear choice for any office.”
Ooma Office is priced at $19.95 a month per user with no contracts required. The system is easy to set up and deploy, and Ooma gives customers their choice of end points – conventional analog phones, IP phones, virtual service through the Office for Mobile app, or any combination of the three.

"One Ring Scam" Robocall Scam Surges Nationwide, FCC

The FCC on Friday warned consumers of a surge in robocalls known as the "One Ring" scam (See the FCC announcement below)
The anatomy of these types of spamy robocalls is,  the caller,most likely automatedoperation, dials your number and hangs up almost immediately — typically after one ring, giving the scam's name, one ring scam. The same call may repeat several times in a row, especially in the overnight hours. Apparently, the scammer is betting you'll be concerned after waking up to repeated calls from the same number, and you'll call back to find out what's going on.
Once you call back, that number is like  a 1-900 number, meaning a number that charges callers, the other end will keep you on the phone as long as possible, running up a huge toll charge you'll see on your next phone bill.
Here are some statistics about robocalls and scams, starting with my own area code;

The above is the distribution of Robocalls to my area code, Provided by YouMail Robocall Index

The top 10 robocall scam types for 2018 were: Health/Health Insurance Scams, Interest Rate Scams, Student Loan Scams, Easy Money Scams, Search Listing Scams, Home-Related Scams, Travel Scams, Tax Scams, Business-Related Scams, and Warranty Scams. Remarkably, the top 5 scams all made over a billion estimated robocalls for each category.

How to avoid this scam

  • Don't answer or return any calls from numbers you don't recognize.
  • Before calling unfamiliar numbers, check to see if the area code is international.
  • If you do not make international calls, ask your phone company to block outgoing international calls on your line.
  • Always be cautious, even if a number appears authentic.

FCC Warning   (In Español | 繁體中文 | Tagalog | Tiếng Việt | 한국어 )
For illegal robocallers, the goal isn't always getting you to answer. Sometimes, it's getting you to call back.
Every so often, your phone may ring once and then stop. If that happens to you, and you do not recognize the number, do not return the call. You may be the target of a "one-ring" phone scam.
One-ring calls may appear to be from phone numbers somewhere in the United States, including three initial digits that resemble U.S. area codes. But savvy scammers often use international numbers from regions that also begin with three-digit codes – for example, "649" goes to the Turks and Caicos and "809" goes to the Dominican Republic. Such scammers may often use spoofing techniques, as well, to further mask the number in your caller ID display.
If you call any such number, you risk being connected to a phone number outside the U.S. As a result, you may wind up being charged a fee for connecting, along with significant per-minute fees for as long as they can keep you on the phone. These charges may show up on your bill as premium services.
Variations of this scam rely on phony voice-mail messages urging you to call a number with an unfamiliar area code to "collect a prize" or to notify you about a "sick" relative.

Filing a complaint with the FCC

If you are billed for a call you made as a result of this scam, first try to resolve the matter with your telephone company. If you are unable to resolve it directly, you can file a complaint with the FCC at not cost.

Filing a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission

If you feel that you are a victim of an international phone scam, you can file a complaint with the FTC.

OurPact Reacts to Apple's Removal Of The App From The App Store, Apple Is Misleading!

According to  New York Times, Apple has systematically banned or restricted 11 third-party apps designed to manage a child's phone or iPad use. Among apps either banned or restricted, according to the Times, are OurPact (the top parental-control iPhone app before it was banned), Freedom, Kaspersky Lab, Kidslox, Mobicip and Qustodio.
The parental-control apps violate Apple's App Store guidelines by using MDM to control a child's device, Apple said in a statement. According to Apple, MDM is approved only for enterprise uses to manage and control worker devices.

Apple also said MDM apps could be vulnerable to hackers.
"Beyond the control that the app itself can exert over the user's device, research has shown that MDM profiles could be used by hackers to gain access for malicious purposes," :) So all enterprise apps using MDM are vulnerable? I think Apple is wrong here, perhaps it wants to control or do not want to control screen time, for children.
Here is OurPact's take on the issue;

Apple Removed OurPact From the App Store. Here’s What You Need to Know.

On Saturday, April 27th, The New York Times exposed Apple’s systematic removal of screen time applications from the App Store.

Other major publications quickly picked up the story, leading Apple to share a public statement claiming these removals are justified on the grounds that parental control apps using MDM “put users’ privacy and security at risk.” An email from Phil Shiller, SVP Worldwide Marketing, also stated Apple’s position that these apps pose a risk to privacy.

Unfortunately, Apple’s statement is misleading and prevents a constructive conversation around the future of parental controls on iOS.
